Book excerpt: Certain species considered provincially rare in the Lake Simcoe watershed including some listed as threatened or endangered under Ontario's Endangered Species Act (Statutes of Ontario 2007), may be at risk of extirpation due to adverse effects of natural and/or anthropogenic stressors. Climate change, acting alone or in combination with other stressors, may pose an important emerging threat for many of these species. Several tools to assess climate change effects are being developed for use by resource managers to categorize the relative vulnerability of selected species to climate change. In response to the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, Ontario's Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan: 2011-2014, and the Ministry of Natural Resources' Climate Change Strategy, vulnerability assessments have been completed for selected natural assests in the Lake Simcoe watershed. By testing the model against a subset of high priority provincially rare species found within the Lake Simcoe watershed the authors objectives were to: categorize the relative vulnerability of each species; identify species-level indicators that are useful for assessing vulnerability to climate change; identify the key factors causing species vulnerability.--Document.

Book excerpt: The Thames River watershed, located in southwestern Ontario, is home to one of the most diverse aquatic faunal assemblages within the Great Lakes basin. It faces numerous stressors on its water quality and physical habitat. As such, there are 25 freshwater species at risk within the watershed, which includes seven freshwater mussels, six reptiles and 12 fishes. In order to protect these species from becoming more at risk of extinction, a watershed recovery team was developed in order to compile recovery approaches to address this problem. It was first necessary to compile information on the species at risk in the watershed. This report includes information on, for each species at risk, distribution, status, biology and threats. Conservation priority rankings were also assigned to each species and knowledge gaps presented. This information will be used in the development of a recovery strategy for the Thames River watershed.

Clarke 1933 p. 434 In oceans and lakes, zooplankton often make diel vertical migrations (DVM), descending at dawn and coming up again in late afternoon and evening. The small animals cover distances of 10–40 m in lakes or even a few hundred metres in the open oceans. Although not as spectacular as migrations of birds or the massive movements of large mammals over the African savannas, the numbers involved are very large and the biomass exceed the bulk of the African herds. For example, in the Antarctic oceans swarms of “Krill” may cover kilometres across, with thousands of individuals per cubic metre. These Euphausiids are food for whales, the most bulky animals on earth. Zooplankton are key species in the pelagic food web, intermediary between algae and ?sh, and thus essential for the functioning of the pelagic community. Prey for many, they have evolved diverse strategies of survival and DVM is the most imp- tant one. Most ?sh are visually hunting predators and need a high light intensity to detect the often transparent animals. By moving down, the well-lit surface layers are avoided but they have to come up again at night to feed on algae.
