Book excerpt: Certain specialty crops produced in other countries have gained better access to U.S. markets since 2007, when USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service changed its regulatory protocols for phytosanitary (plant health) concerns. One treatment option allowed under the 2007 protocols is irradiation. Using the example of U.S. imports of Indian mangoes, we examine the role of irradiation in mitigating pest risks from imported fresh produce, the costs associated with treating, shipping, and marketing fresh produce imports in the U.S. market, and the resulting increased availability and lower costs of Indian mangoes for U.S. consumers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the world’s food security challenge will require a multi-national, collaborative effort to integrate the best research from science, engineering and socioeconomics so that technological advances can bring benefits where they are most needed. The present book covers the effect of major environmental problems on crop production and how to cope with these issues for sustainable agriculture and improvements of crops. The world’s population is predicted to hit 9.6 Billion by 2050, up from today’s total of nearly 7.3 Billion, and with it food demand is predicted to increase substantially. The post-war ‘second agricultural revolution’ in developed countries, and the ‘green revolution’ in developing nations in the mid- 1960s converted agricultural practices and elevated crop yields spectacularly, but the outcome is levelling off and will not meet projected demand. Simultaneously, crop production is affected by many other factors, including industrial pollution, overuse of fertilizers and insecticides, heavy metal and radiation stresses etc. It has been noted that many pests are becoming resistant to insecticides. Estimates vary, but around 25% of crops can be lost to pests and diseases. Climate change associated with agriculture is also a global issue. Agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and is estimated to account for 10-12% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Many of the issues highlighted are global problems and are addressed thoroug hly in this work.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Farmers' markets across the state of Florida have been increasing in popularity over the past three decades, showing an steady increase over the past two years. Very little information is available regarding the price relationship between farmers' markets and nearby grocery stores. Further investigation of this relationship was necessary and yielded vital information to support further understanding of pricing trends between these two sources. By obtaining prices from both farmers' markets and grocery stores that are closest to each of the markets, a pricing model and price difference percentages were created to address the intended objectives of: advising vendors at farmers' markets on how to competitively price their produce and conveying price differences between the two sources to vendors. Through this, vendors and consumers will have tangible information regarding whether a farmers' market or grocery store offers the lowest prices for specialty crops. Farmers that participate in the markets will also have a better understanding of how to more so competitively price their products and how much of a profit they are losing out on.
