Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Margaritas to Tropical Coffee Cake to Snapper Rangoon—more than 200 Florida Keys culinary delights from the James Beard Award winner. The sun-drenched Florida Keys are a unique crossroads where Caribbean, European, and American cultures and cuisines meet. In The Flavors of the Florida Keys, Linda Gassenheimer brings the islands to your kitchen with over two hundred recipes that range from the humble (Bahamian Conch Chowder) to the sophisticated (Crab Cakes with Pommery Mustard Sauce) to the comforting (Sweet Potato Bisque) to the unusual (Heavenly Hogfish). In her quest for the best of the Keys’ culinary traditions, Gassenheimer has been everywhere from waterfront beach shacks to resort dining rooms, while collecting the stories of the men and women behind the recipes—the eccentric artists and writers, the local fishermen, and the bon vivants captured by the magical atmosphere of the region. Your dinner companions include chef Doug Shook from acclaimed Louie’s Backyard, Elena Spottswood, a member of one of the original Conch families, who shares her recipe for a perfect Cuban Mojito, and Wolfgang Birk, whose Ocean Bounty serves up an abundance of superlative seafood from the surrounding seas. Travel the Keys with Gassenheimer’s “highly recommended” book by your side, and discover its hidden treasures—perfect as a stove-side companion for bringing the sunlight and spirit of the Keys to your own dining table, whether it be for cocktails, appetizers, entrees, side dishes, salads, sandwiches, soups, or desserts (Library Journal).

Book excerpt: Enjoy a fun and delicious journey through the Caribbean in this vibrant collection of gourmet and home-style recipes. Hugh Sinclair and Cynthia Verna, known as "Chef Irie" and "Chef Thia" on their television show Taste the Islands, introduce ingredients and flavors that open windows into the region's many cultures. Sinclair and Verna share their own recipes as well as traditional island favorites. Starting with "stop gap" snacks like fritters made from malanga root and continuing through desserts and cocktails, they include refreshing salads like pineapple pepper slaw, soups with "a healthy dose of soul" made with bases such as calabaza pumpkin or black beans, and main dishes such as curried goat or mussels chorizo in mango coconut sauce. From the authors' home nations of Jamaica and Haiti to St. Lucia, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago, the communities represented in these dishes have deep histories. The recipes feature both native and colonial food traditions that have been passed down for generations and showcase African, European, Middle Eastern, and Asian influences. Sinclair and Verna also incorporate tastes and techniques from their international travels, capturing the eclectic variety of Caribbean cuisine today. Filled with colorful photographs and infused with the joy of two expert chefs celebrating the foods that are closest to their hearts, Taste the Islands brings the places, histories, and rhythms of the Caribbean into your home kitchen.

This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the only complete history of Florida’s American Beach to date, Marsha Dean Phelts draws together personal interviews, photos, newspaper articles, memoirs, maps, and official documents to reconstruct the character and traditions of Amelia Island’s 200-acre African American community. In its heyday, when other beaches grudgingly provided only limited access, black vacationers traveled as many as 1,000 miles down the east coast of the United States and hundreds of miles along the Gulf coast to a beachfront that welcomed their business. Beginning in 1781 with the Samuel Harrison homestead on the southern end of Amelia Island, Phelts traces the birth of the community to General Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15, in which the Union granted many former Confederate coastal holdings, including Harrison’s property, to former slaves. She then follows the lineage of the first African American families known to have settled in the area to descendants remaining there today, including those of Zephaniah Kingsley and his wife, Anna Jai. Moving through the Jim Crow era, Phelts describes the development of American Beach’s predecessors in the early 1900s. Finally, she provides the fullest account to date of the life and contributions of Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the wealthy African American businessman who in 1935, as president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, initiated the purchase and development of the tract of seashore known as American Beach. From Lewis’s arrival on the scene, Phelts follows the community’s sustained development and growth, highlighting landmarks like the Ocean-Vu-Inn and the Blue Palace and concluding with a stirring plea for the preservation of American Beach, which is currently threatened by encroaching development. In a narrative full of firsthand accounts and "old-timer" stories, Phelts, who has vacationed at American Beach since she was four and now lives there, frequently adopts the style of an oral historian to paint what is ultimately a personal and intimate portrait of a community rich in heritage and culture.

Book excerpt: The Windward Road, published in 1956, made history. When Archie Carr began to rove the Caribbean to write about sea turtles, he saw that their numbers were dwindling. Out of this appeal to save them grew the first ventures in international sea turtle conservation and the establishment of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation. In addition to sea turtle biology, Carr recorded his general impressions, producing a natural history sprinkled with colorful stories.
