Book excerpt: The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman, and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) was published in April 2006. This report presents the second set of growth standards (head circumference-for-age, arm circumference-for-age, triceps skinfold-for-age, and subscapular skinfold-for-age). The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to pediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations. The magnitude of this disease is staggering, its mortality rate relentless. It is in the shadowy corners of this battle that we find our purpose-to shed light on the nutritional needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS. With a friendly and engaging approach reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway's literary style, "Fighting the Hidden Battle" offers a captivating exploration into this critical realm of health. HIV, the virus at the heart of this devastating disease, is shrouded in mystery and traces its lineage to the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-a virus discovered in monkeys. The origins of its transmission to humans remain a subject of debate, with theories ranging from the green monkey hypothesis to germ warfare and mutation theories. In 1981, the virus made its ominous debut in Los Angeles, afflicting a wide spectrum of individuals-young homosexuals, heterosexuals, intravenous drug users, and haemophiliacs alike. Within the pages of this book, we delve into a crucial aspect often overlooked-the nutritional needs of those battling HIV/AIDS. As the virus ravages the immune system, it brings forth a host of challenges that extend beyond the realm of medicine. Nutrition emerges as a vital ally-a potent force that can bolster the strength, resilience, and well-being of individuals facing this hidden battle. Unveiling the secrets of optimal nutrition, "Fighting the Hidden Battle" explores the profound impact that diet and nourishment can have on the lives of HIV/AIDS infected individuals. With compassion and expertise, it offers insights into the unique nutritional requirements that arise during this battle. It goes beyond mere sustenance, unveiling strategies to enhance immune function, manage opportunistic infections, and improve overall quality of life. Step into the world of "Fighting the Hidden Battle," where Hemingway's prose intertwines with friendly guidance, making complex scientific concepts accessible to all. This book serves as a beacon of understanding, providing a comprehensive resource for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS. It invites you to embrace knowledge, compassion, and a renewed sense of hope as we strive to empower those affected by this formidable foe. So, join us on this compelling journey-a journey that transcends disease and delves into the profound significance of nutrition in the face of adversity. "Fighting the Hidden Battle" is more than a book-it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a call to action, and a beacon of hope in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
