Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic is having profound effects on all dimensions of life: individual, social, cultural, and public and economic health, among others. The contribution of social sciences is very relevant in understanding this disease and pandemic as well as its effects. It is also relevant for taking measures, such as, for example, compliance with physical distance, mask-wearing, no gatherings, and information to the population in a more efficient way. This book discusses topics such as COVID-19 in a risk society and its implications; the situation of patients with diabetes in a lockdown context; the technological, pedagogical, and social challenges posed by remote teaching; and, finally, the explanation of potential contributions of several specific social sciences that can shape both the taking of measures and their fulfilment in the desired direction. The book concludes with an analysis of the underlying social, psychological, and philosophical issues that are pandemic-related and that may have a considerable impact on societies and individuals, also highlighting the situation of the most disadvantaged groups, given that pandemics tend to accentuate social inequalities.

Book excerpt: The lasting turmoil associated with the unprecedented pandemic, triggered by the novel corona virus COVID-19, has dragged the world into a mud of uncertainty. Fiscal stimulation, interest rate cuts, global supply-chain redeployment, "pandemic bond" and circuit breakers kicked in and the world is responding to this great challenge. But how can finance and economic research help the world under such circumstances? This book dwells on this new area of research and tries to understand how pandemics impact the economic and financial ecosystem of both emerging and advanced economies. Lessons learnt from the experience of previous pandemics maybe presented and discussed through drawing on policy lessons to date. By gathering research on political economy, geopolitical issues, behavioral finance, international institutional responses and medical and health issues resulting from pandemics, the chapters in this edited volume help in expanding the knowledge of social and economic consequences of the pandemic as well as set the foundation for future research. This book would benefit scholars, policy makers and entrepreneurs worldwide as a valuable archive of research on pandemics. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Emerging Markets Finance and Trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted life globally through virus-related mortality and morbidity and the social and economic impacts of actions taken to stop the virus’ spread. It became evident early on during the pandemic that older adults are especially vulnerable to morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, and the adverse consequences of strategies taken to mitigate its effects. While no more likely to become infected than younger populations, the risk for hospitalization and death rises considerably with age. Residents of long-term care facilities have been among the hardest hit. The pandemic has brought many facets of ageism to the fore. Community stay-at-home messages, lockdowns, social distancing requirements, and visitation restrictions contributed to a concomitant epidemic in social isolation and loneliness. Economic and social impacts have been dramatic; so too has been the disproportionate hardship experienced by members of racial and ethnic minority communities. This book reports original empirical research and perspectives on the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic for the older adult population, and draws lessons for policy, research, and practice. Key issues pertaining to the impact of COVID-19 on older adults and their families, caregivers, and communities are highlighted. Four main areas are examined: personal experiences with COVID-19; long-term care system impacts; end-of-life care; and technology and innovation. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Aging & Social Policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade is highly affected by mycotoxin contaminations, which result in an annual 5% to 10% loss of global crop production. In the last decade, the mycotoxin scenario has been complicated by the progressive understanding—alongside emerging mycotoxins—of the parallel presence of modified (masked and conjugated) forms, in addition to the previously free known ones. The present Toxins Special Issue presents original research papers and reviews that deal with the fates of all these forms of mycotoxins with respect to aspects that cover traditional and industrial food processing, yearly grain campaign peculiar conditions and management, novel analytical solutions, consumer exposure, and biomarker-assessment directions. It gives a taste of an exciting scientific field that has several implications for our daily life because (i) it covers our diet practically and from every point of view, (ii) it intersects with our culinary uses and customs, but also industrial production processes, and (iii) it involves a careful evaluation of costs and benefits and a constant and continuous improvement of mycotoxin mitigation strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures a unique moment in time, relatively early into the COVID-19 pandemic, when the implications and consequences of the pandemic remained unclear and largely unpredictable. The contributors to this volume contemplate the impact of the pandemic on our relationships with children and youth, child and youth serving systems, and broader issues in society that directly relate to childhood and youth. The essays collected in this volume cover a variety of perspectives that range from systemic racism in child-serving institutions to the politics of childhood during a pandemic, and the psychological and even neurological impacts of lockdowns, public restrictions and social isolation. Beyond capturing the moment in time, the contributors also focused on the long-term; they contemplated how the evolving situation might affect the way we think about child and youth services and our relationships to children, their families and their communities. From the very theoretical to the concrete and the practical, this volume provides current thinking and practice in relation to pandemic-impacted residential care settings, education and schools, hospital settings, communities, practitioners, and more. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Child & Youth Services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the SARS-CoV-2/CoVID-19 pandemic as a giant case study, and following the structure of the domains of information security, this book looks at what the crisis teaches us about security. It points out specific security fundamentals where social, medical, or business responses to the crisis failed or needed to make specific use of those concepts. For the most part, these lessons are simply reminders of factors that get neglected during times of non-crisis. The lessons particularly point out the importance of planning and resilience in systems and business. Those studying cybersecurity and its preventive measures and applications, as well as those involved in risk management studies and assessments, will all benefit greatly from the book. Robert Slade has had an extensive and prolific career in management, security, and telecommunications research, analysis, and consultancy. He has served as an educator visiting universities and delivering lecturers and seminars.
