Book excerpt: Recognizing that many students with disabilities, including students with severe disabilities, lack self-determined behavior and the impact it has on students school and postschool outcomes. Educators and researchers are increasingly advocating to better equip those students with the needed skills and knowledge to enable them to be self-determined and control their life to the fullest possible extent. This study surveyed 197 elementary and secondary special education teachers in public schools in a single state. The survey focused on teachers' perceptions of the importance of teaching the seven skills of self-determination and the barriers they perceive that inhibit them from teaching self-determination. Teachers attributed considerable importance to teaching self-determination skills and reported addressing these skills with moderate to high frequency in their classrooms. Overall, rating of the frequency of teaching these skills were less than the rating of the importance across all skills. Few differences in rating of frequency of instruction were found based on school level.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of explicitly teaching self-advocacy skills to three middle school students with mild/moderate disabilities by having them memorize a script and request accommodations in a training and generalization setting. The intervention components included 16 lessons comprising discussion and reflections about their disabilities and educational rights under IDEA, a four-part script and a promoting procedure. The script included (a) greeting teacher and asking if it's a good time to talk, (b) expressing concern with assignment, (c) asking for accommodation, and (d) thanking teacher. The dependent variables were (a) frequency, measured by the number of cumulative requests made over the course of the study, and (b) accuracy, measured by number of steps aligning with the pre-rehearsed script. Results, evaluated between the intervention and the dependent variables. Results suggest that special education teachers can effectively teach self-determination skills, allowing students with disabilities to self-advocate for accommodations in the general education setting. Further research is needed to confirm current findings.

While the effects of self-determination for students with disabilities are established, there is still limited knowledge of the presence of the construct in preservice teacher preparation programs. This study begins to addresses this gap. In particular, a nationwide sample of secondary general education and special education teacher preparation programs was examined. Department chairs and program coordinators were surveyed and revealed a significant difference in the mean self-determination score of participants representing special education teacher preparation programs and participants representing secondary general education teacher preparation programs. Specifically, special education teacher preparation participants had a significantly higher mean score on the 'Autonomy' and 'Self-Regulation' sections of the survey across all participants, 'Autonomy' had the lowest mean of all of the sections. Participants identifying as a department chair had a significantly higher self-determination score than participants that did not identify as a department chair. Finally, participants representing a university located in a state with standards for secondary special education and self-determination had a significantly higher self-determination score than participants located in a state without a standard for secondary special education and self-determination.
