Download or read book My Nameday written by Helen McLoughlin and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY NAMEDAY—COME FOR DESSERT, which was first published in 1962, is an invitation to parents to celebrate the family’s namedays. It contains the names, feasts, and symbols of our Blessed Mother and the saints, prayers of the liturgy, and appropriate desserts for the celebration of the sanctoral cycle of the Church year in the home. A nameday commemorates the feast of the saint whose name we received at baptism. To the Church’s mind, the day of the saint’s death is his real feastday, and that is the day usually assigned as his feast—his birthday into heaven. In some countries and in most religious orders it is customary to observe namedays instead of birthdays. On a child’s nameday, “My Nameday—Come for Dessert” is a popular way to entertain. It is economical, festive and meaningful, and permits the family to splurge on a fabulous dessert without inflicting lasting wounds on the budget. It can be a “little evening”—a time for a party and a prayer for the child in the company of his friends, a time for pleasant conversation for the grown-ups who accompany them.

Book Synopsis The Sexual/Political by : Lorenzo Bernini
Download or read book The Sexual/Political written by Lorenzo Bernini and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sexual/Political engages with contemporary political issues in sexuality through a survey of modern philosophy, psychoanalytic thought, 20th-century political theory, and more recent queer philosophies. The book investigates how the sexual has perturbed philosophical, political, and psychoanalytic thought and how this has fed into discrimination against the LGBTQI community. It analyses the social stigmas applied to public and private sexual acts and the psychopolitical processes leading to the prevalence of neo-fascist populism in Italy and the world. Tracing the history of sexuality through Freud, Marx, Fanon, and Foucault, among many others, Bernini considers why the sexual has always been an exceptionally difficult object to consider in political theory. This book will be of key interest to scholars in queer theory; antisocial theory; psychoanalysis and politics; drive theory; political philosophy; critical theory; LGBTQIA+ issues; gender and sexuality studies; and Italian studies. Book excerpt: BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book Synopsis Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith by : Terry Rey
Download or read book Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith written by Terry Rey and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, significant numbers of Haitian immigrants began to arrive and settle in Miami. Overcoming some of the most foreboding obstacles ever to face immigrants in America, they, their children, and now their grandchildren, as well as more recently arriving immigrants from Haiti, have diversified socioeconomically. Together, they have made South Florida home to the largest population of native-born Haitians and diasporic Haitians outside of the Caribbean and one of the most significant Caribbean immigrant communities in the world. Religion has played a central role in making all of this happen. Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith is a historical and ethnographic study of Haitian religion in immigrant communities, based on fieldwork in both Miami and Haiti, as well as extensive archival research. Where many studies of Haitian religion limit themselves to one faith, Rey and Stepick explore Catholicism, Protestantism, and Vodou in conversation with one another, suggesting that despite the differences between these practices, the three faiths ultimately create a sense of unity, fulfillment, and self-worth in Haitian communities. This meticulously researched and vibrantly written book contributes to the growing body of literature on religion among new immigrants, as well as providing a rich exploration of Haitian faith communities.

Download or read book Against Jovinianus written by St. Jerome and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Book Synopsis Meet Your Mother by : Dr. Mark Miravalle
Download or read book Meet Your Mother written by Dr. Mark Miravalle and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder why so many people pay so much attention to Mary, the Mother of Jesus? From the most ancient traditions of Mary in Christianity to the “Hail Mary” pass in American football, the Mother of Jesus has pervaded most world cultures for the last two thousand years. But could the Mother of Jesus also be your mother? That’s the question explored in the exciting new book, Meet Your Mother. This easy-read pocket book on Mary covers all the major teachings about the Mother of Jesus, but is particularly written for the person who has little or no background knowledge about her. Authored by Dr. Mark Miravalle, (a professor who has taught and written about Mary for over 25 years), Meet Your Mother is the perfect little book to introduce someone to the life and truth about Jesus’ Mother, but also to renew a person’s existing knowledge and love for the woman believed to have brought Jesus into the world, and who Jesus gave personally to every human being with his dying words, “This is your mother.” Here’s an excerpt from the Introduction of Meet Your Mother: This little book is about your Mother. I know, you might not see her as that right now, but that’s the point of the book—to meet her, if you do not already know her, and if you do already know her, to love her more... Now, please consider reading on, even if you do not consider Jesus to be your best friend, and/or if you don’t presently believe Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is your spiritual mother. I would be honored if you would at least give me the chance to try to explain why I believe you do, in fact, have the most beautiful and the most perfect mother in the world – a maternal gift of love and sacrifice from the dying Jesus, personally, to you. If nothing else, you may have a new understanding of why well over 1.5 billion people living today do believe they have the Mother of Jesus as their own spiritual mother as well. And beyond Catholics and Orthodox Christians, there are millions and millions of other members of our human family, including many Protestant Christians, Muslims, and other world religions who give a special place of honor to the Mother of Jesus.
