And while appearing to be a buttoned-down office type, Ben soon convinced Dani to hunt down those responsible for the mayhem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION a. The value of all counterintelligence (CI) investigations is linked directly to the quality of reports such investigations yield. The finest investigative work loses its value if the CI Special Agent does not report the results accurately, clearly, and concisely. It is therefore paramount that all CI Special Agents devote a great deal of effort to ensure they become expert report writers. b. CI investigative reports transmit information to a regional control office to provide a record of investigative activities and help decision makers reach informed decisions about the direction an investigation should take. Failure to produce high quality reports could jeopardize national security interests and may result in the loss of American lives. A misguided investigation resulting from poor CI report writing can lead to the loss or destruction of US facilities, the successful carrying out of a terrorist act, or the loss or compromise of classified material, giving an opposing military force a decisive advantage over US Forces on the battlefield. c. The standardization of CI investigative report formats is designed to ensure the logical presentation of specific information, regardless of where, or by whom, the report is prepared. CI reports must present all available information to answer any and all reasonable questions reviewing authorities may need answered. d. Quality CI reports rely heavily upon the CI Special Agent’s attention to detail. Readers of CI reports must understand fully and exactly what the CI Special Agent is reporting. The report becomes the sole source of information on that particular investigative activity. Reports must be: (1) Accurate: Accuracy is the most important characteristic of any report. Accuracy means precise, exact reporting and careful descriptions. The report must accurately reflect the facts furnished by the interviewee. If a Source expresses an opinion or belief which is not a known fact, you must report it as such. Reports must state exactly what the source saw, heard, said, and did. (2) Pertinent: Pertinent information relates directly to the investigation. It can be any information that leads to a better understanding of the facts and the persons involved. (3) Clear: The report must be logically organized and understandable. CI Special Agents must write sentences clearly to avoid any possible misinterpretation of the facts. You must emphasize ideas in a direct, uncomplicated style using standard, grammatically correct English, and simple wording. (4) Unbiased: An unbiased report includes all pertinent information about the incident under investigation. You must never omit information that does not support your view of the facts. You must do your best not to form your own opinion about what happened in order to remain an objective, impartial, and unbiased reporter of facts. (5) Concise: A concise report is straight to the point. Conciseness implies brevity, but does not dictate the length of the report, which will depend on the information available. While we should strive for brevity, we must never sacrifice accuracy or completeness in the process. (6) Complete: Reports must contain all the facts that answer the six basic interrogatives: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW. The report must leave no unanswered questions. If you omit a single link in the chain of facts, decision makers may make incorrect decisions, the results of which could prove disastrous. Proofread all your completed reports and compare them to your notes. (7) Uniformity: Agencies write reports in very much the same format throughout the Department of Defense (with the exception of some regional differences based on geographical peculiarities). This ensures all persons who may read the report regardless of location easily understand the information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the FDR administration placed the FBI in charge of political surveillance in Latin America. Through a program called the Special Intelligence Service (SIS), 700 agents were assigned to combat Nazi influence in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. The SIS’s mission, however, extended beyond countries with significant German populations or Nazi spy rings. As evidence of the SIS’s overreach, forty-five agents were dispatched to Ecuador, a country without any German espionage networks. Furthermore, by 1943, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover shifted the SIS’s focus from Nazism to communism. Marc Becker interrogates a trove of FBI documents from its Ecuador mission to uncover the history and purpose of the SIS’s intervention in Latin America and for the light they shed on leftist organizing efforts in Latin America. Ultimately, the FBI’s activities reveal the sustained nature of US imperial ambitions in the Americas.

As long as there has been conflict, there have been female agents behind the scenes. In Belgium and northern France in 1914–18 there were several thousand women actively working against the Kaiser's forces occupying their homelands. In the Second World War, women of many nations opposed the Nazis, risking the firing squad or decapitation by axe or guillotine. Yet, many of those women did not have the right to vote for a government or even open a bank account. So why did they do it? Female Secret Agents explores the lives and the motivations of the women of many races and social classes who have risked their lives as secret agents, and celebrates their intelligence, strength and courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Brilliant. . . . [A] major contribution to the histories of sexuality and government surveillance” (Debby Applegate, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Most Famous Man in America). America’s first anti–sex trafficking law, the 1910 Mann Act, made it illegal to transport women over state lines for prostitution “or any other immoral purpose.” It was meant to protect women and girls from being seduced or sold into sexual slavery. But, as Jessica Pliley illustrates, its enforcement resulted more often in the policing of women’s sexual behavior, reflecting conservative attitudes toward women’s roles at home and their movements in public. Policing Sexuality links the crusade against sex trafficking to the rapid growth of the Bureau from a few dozen agents at the time of the Mann Act into a formidable law enforcement organization that cooperated with state and municipal authorities across the nation. In pursuit of offenders, the Bureau often intervened in domestic squabbles on behalf of men intent on monitoring their wives and daughters. Working prostitutes were imprisoned at dramatically increased rates, while their male clients were seldom prosecuted. In upholding the Mann Act, the FBI reinforced sexually conservative views of the chaste woman and the respectable husband and father, building national power by expanding its legal authority to police Americans’ sexuality and by marginalizing the very women it was charged to protect. “A fascinating, first-rate study . . . Pliley resurrects a lost history of conflicts over gender, sexuality, masculinity, disease, and deviance in the early twentieth-century United States.” —Beverly Gage, author of The Day Wall Street Exploded “A valuable contribution for those curious about the history of women, gender, and sexuality, as well as those interested in the role of policing and the FBI in the cultural and political history of the U.S. in the 20th century.”

Book excerpt: The history of the United States is the history of people who migrated to America from all parts of the world. As a result American society is composed of many unique cultures and races. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of these cultures is one of the underlying causes of tension and conflict in America, resulting in racism, religious intolerance, and class warfare. In spite of this, the multi-racial nature of American society is an integral part of America's strength as a nation. Thousands of immigrants from unique cultures who speak totally different languages came to find a better life in America. But they were never accepted by the dominate white Christians. The immigrants had to fight for the right to be in America. Racism, race riots, and genocide are integral parts of the lives of immigrants. The racial complexion of America is changing in the twenty-first century. In a short time the non-white population will be the majority. Social, economic, and political changes are already taking place. Unfortunately, the dominate power holders and white middle classes have not adjusted to these changes. The unique system of government and economics developed over the years has reached a point that many believe will end the American Empire. There is a certain bias in this presentation and criticism is aimed at the extreme beliefs and actions of a large segment of Americans, particularly white Christians. They have been the dominant political, social, and economic forces in the country. Any assessment of the American system becomes a criticism of that segment of Americans. Their beliefs and actions represent the Dark Side of America.
