Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 addresses stereoscopic vision. It starts with the physiology of stereoscopic mechanisms. It then deals with binocular rivalry, binocular summation, and interocular transfer. A review of how images are brought into binocular register is followed by a review of stimulus tokens used to detect disparities. Cyclopean effects, such as cyclopean illusions, cyclopean motion, texture segregation, and binocular direction are reviewed. Factors that influence stereoacuity are discussed. Two chapters describe how stimuli in distinct depth planes produce contrast effects, and affect motion perception and whiteness perception. The Pulfrich stereomotion effect and perception of motion in depth are reviewed. The volume ends with a review of applications of stereoscopy.

Book excerpt: This book gathers together information concerning the interaction of hu man stereopsis with various stereoscopic viewing devices, especially those used in teleoperator systems. The book is not concerned with machine vi sion systems. In these systems, data analogous to human binocular visual information is gathered and analyzed by some device for use in decision making or control, often without the intervention of a human. This subject presents problems of considerable complexity; it has generated many inge nious solutions and has been the inspiration of much work of fundamental importance. But the problems are quite different from those encountered in the design of systems intended to exploit human stereopsis, and there is surprisingly little cross-fertilization between the two fields. 1. 1. SCOPE AND STRUCTURE OF THIS BOOK The book surveys the known properties of the human unaided binocu lar system, and where possible gives the magnitude of parameters that are of use in designing technical systems involving a human operator. Chapter 2 summarizes the human stereoscopic vision literature including the depth distortions of unaided stereoscopic viewing. Chapter 3 describes a variety of 3-D image viewing techniques and deals with the performance limits of human stereopsis assisted by simple stereoscopic viewing devices. Chapter 4 extends this treatment to television binocular viewing devices, and shows 1 2 Chapter 1 that the nature of the depth distortion is changed. Chapter 5 analyzes the geometry of single camera stereoscopic systems, and discusses the advan tages and disadvantages of such systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Factors of Stereoscopic Displays provides an overview of all vision-relevant topics and issues that inform stereo display design from a user-centric or human factor, perspective. Although both the basic vision science literature and the applied literature will be reviewed, the strength and originality of this book comes from the emphasis on the basic science literature on human stereo vision and its implications for stereo display design. The reader will learn how to design stereo displays from a human vision/human factors perspective. Over the past several years, there has been a growing interest in the development of high-quality displays that present binocular parallax information to the human visual system for inducing the perception of three-dimensional depth. The methods for presenting binocular parallax to an observer vary widely and include three broad categories of display: stereoscopic, holographic and volumetric displays. Because the technology for stereoscopic displays is more developed and more widely used, than those based on holography or volumetric methods, the proposed book addresses those human factors issues involved in the viewing of stereoscopic displays. Despite the diverse methods for creating stereoscopic displays, which includes stereo spatial multiplexing as well as temporal multiplexing (i.e., field sequential) techniques, there remain common human factor issues that arise when viewing such displays. Human Factors of Stereoscopic Displays will provide a detailed review of these important issues so that they can be considered when designing and using 3D displays. In doing so, the following topics will be covered: interocular cross talk; interocular differences in luminance and contrast; accommodation-vergence mismatch; stereoanomaly; spatio-temporal frequency effects; distance scaling of disparity and high-level cue conflict. body>

This book was released on 1992 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual system must perform two major functions. The first is resolving spatial layout, and the second is object recognition. Because we live in a three-dimensional (3D) world, these tasks must be performed in three dimensions. That is, the visual system must assess 3D spatial layout and must recognize 3D objects. There are two types of information sources that could be used to perform both functions. Cues of the first type arise directly from characteristics of in the environment. These include shape-from- shading, depth from texture gradients, and motion parallax due to movements of objects in the environment. Cues of the second type arise from characteristics of the observer. These include motion parallax due to movements of the observer through the environment, and binocular disparity due to the relative positions of the two eyes. This paper is concerned with how the visual system processes the last cue: binocular disparity. Specifically, it addresses the visual system's processing of binocular disparity across multiple spatial scales.
