Book excerpt: This volume consists of refereed research and expository articles by both plenary and other speakers at the International Conference on Algebra and Applications held at Ohio University in June 2008, to honor S.K. Jain on his 70th birthday. The articles are on a wide variety of areas in classical ring theory and module theory, such as rings satisfying polynomial identities, rings of quotients, group rings, homological algebra, injectivity and its generalizations, etc. Included are also applications of ring theory to problems in coding theory and in linear algebra.

Book excerpt: The book is mainly concerned with the theory of rings in which both maximal and minimal conditions hold for ideals (except in the last chapter, where rings of the type of a maximal order in an algebra are considered). The central idea consists of representing rings as rings of endomorphisms of an additive group, which can be achieved by means of the regular representation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and structured introduction to the subject. After a chapter on the definition of rings and modules there are brief accounts of Artinian rings, commutative Noetherian rings and ring constructions, such as the direct product, Tensor product and rings of fractions, followed by a description of free rings. Readers are assumed to have a basic understanding of set theory, group theory and vector spaces. Over two hundred carefully selected exercises are included, most with outline solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Smarandache multi-space is a union of n various spaces equipped with different structures for an integer n ¡Ý 2, which can be both used for discrete or connected spaces, particularly for geometries and space-times in theoretical physics. This monograph concentrates on characterizing various multi-spaces and includes three parts. The first part is on algebraic multi-spaces, with structures such as those of multi-groups, multi-rings, multi-vector spaces, multi-metric spaces, multi-operation systems and multi-manifolds, also multi-voltage graphs, multi-embedding of a graph in an n-manifold, etc. The second discusses Smarandache geometries, including those of map geometries, planar map geometries, and pseudo-plane geometries, in which the Finsler geometry, particularly the Riemann geometry appears as a special case of the Smarandache geometries. The third part of this book considers applications of multi-spaces to theoretical physics, including relativity theory, M-theory, and cosmology. Multi-space models for p-branes and cosmos are constructed and some questions in cosmology are clarified by multi-spaces. The first two parts are relatively independent for reading and in each part open problems are included for further research of interested readers.

Both defy modern physics and scientists find themselves continually searching for answers. This unique volume brings together world leaders in cosmology, particle physics, quantum gravity, mathematics, philosophy and theology, to provide fresh insights into the deep structure of space and time. In an attempt to understand the question, subjects ranging from dark matter to the philosophical and theological implications of spacetime are covered, ensuring that the issue is thoroughly explored. Interesting and thought-provoking answers provide a well-rounded read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this book discusses the role that marginality has had in the past, has today and will have in the future. The Commission on Dynamics of Marginal and Critical Regions held its annual conference in Harare, Zimbabwe in July 1997. This volume represents a carefully selected, revised and reviewed selection of the papers presented at this conference. The articles reflect the various aspects of marginality currently existing in the world and it is the intention of the Commission to pursue research that would eventually result in a more coherent approach towards the issues of marginality in space. The articles in the book are grouped into three main parts. The first part discusses the role of theory and also methodological aspects and approaches towards the question of marginality. The second part gives a 'time-space' perspective by examining the past, present and future aspects of marginality. The third part is dedicated to empirical evidence about the changes in existing marginality and its possible future implementations. The conclusions of the book summarize the various and sometimes conflicting, aspects of marginality and its ’images’ both in space and in time.

Book excerpt: Maintaining the standard of excellence set by the previous edition, this textbook covers the basic geometry of two- and three-dimensional spaces Written by a master expositor, leading researcher in the field, and MacArthur Fellow, it includes experiments to determine the true shape of the universe and contains illustrated examples and engaging exercises that teach mind-expanding ideas in an intuitive and informal way. Bridging the gap from geometry to the latest work in observational cosmology, the book illustrates the connection between geometry and the behavior of the physical universe and explains how radiation remaining from the big bang may reveal the actual shape of the universe.
