This book was released on 1993 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, the development of a spatial forest data base over most of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region was commissioned to provide the thematic basis for studies conducted for the forest fragmentation and biodiversity project under the forest landscape ecology program. The data base included a range of forest and vegetation cover classes, with the red pine and white pine stands restricted to those over 50 years of age. A method combining remote sensing and geographic information system technology was used for the project. This report describes the northern and southern sectors of the Eastern Ontario segment.

Book Synopsis The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.) by : Jerome Allan Krueger
Download or read book The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.) written by Jerome Allan Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents an analysis of regeneration processes for eastern white pine (Pinus strohus L.). The objective is to develop an integrated approach to evaluate the influence of factors that, alone and in combination, determine regeneration outcomes. This study is composed of three sections. The first chapter is a literature review of white pine regeneration dynamics. The purpose is to present a process for understanding the regeneration process of a single species and present a conceptual approach to integrated evaluation of influential variables. Six interrelated ecological factors (seed tree density, competition, disturbance, seedbed conditions, soils, and damage agents) were identified and their impact on the regeneration process is evaluated. A conceptual model of the integration approach and two examples of how this approach can be utilized in assessing regeneration operations are presented.
Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Download or read book A Comparison of Small Mammal Communities in Old Pine Forests and Other Common Forest Types in Sault Ste. Marie District written by Scott L. Jones and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description of the small mammal communities inhabiting old pine forests and the other forest types common in Schembri, Way-White, and Wlasy Townships in the Territorial District of Algoma, about 100 km east of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The study identified whether old pine forests represented unique habitats for small mammals, and predicted the impact of timber harvest on small mammal communities. Small mammals were collected using Victor mouse traps in cut and uncut stands of old growth white pine, hard maple, boreal mixedwood, and black spruce.

Book Synopsis A Quantitative Basis for Using Ontario's Existing Ecoregionalization Systems by : David J. B. Baldwin
Download or read book A Quantitative Basis for Using Ontario's Existing Ecoregionalization Systems written by David J. B. Baldwin and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 1998 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecoregionalization systems used in resource management stratify terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems and attempt to simplify ecological complexity. They provide an ecologically based alternative to arbitrary administrative planning units and a logical basis for forest resource & protected area planning, assessing biodiversity, monitoring ecosystems, and stratifying sample areas for research. This report examines the regional-level units of the three ecoregionalization systems available for Ontario: Hills Site Regions (Hills, 1959); Terrestrial Ecoregions of Ontario (Wickware & Rubec, 1989); and Revised Terrestrial Ecoregions (Ecological Stratification Working Group, 1995). The objective is to quantify these systems using a multivariate set of geoclimatic variables and to determine the effectiveness of these systems in stratifying different ecological conditions in the province. The report provides descriptive statistics & principal components analysis of each regional unit, compares multivariate distances & geologic similarity among units, and examines gradients of geoclimatic variables across unit boundaries. Strengths & weaknesses of each system in delineating groups of variables (temperature, precipitation, geology, terrain) are discussed along with the implications for using existing systems & future ecoregionalization development.
