Book excerpt: Channels that were scoured to bedrock by debris flows provided unique opportunities to calculate the rate of sediment and wood accumulation, to make inferences about processes associated with input and transport of sediment, and to gain insight into the temporal succession of channel morphology following disturbance. In an intensive investigation of 13 channels the time since the previous debris flow was estimated using dendrochronology. The volume of wood in the channel was positively and linearly correlated with the time since the previous debris flow. The pattern of sediment accumulation was non-linear and appeared to increase as the storage capacity of the channel increased through time. Wood stored the majority of the sediment in these steep headwater streams, and landslides and wind throw were the dominant mechanisms for delivering wood to the channel. With an adequate supply of wood, small streams have the potential to store large volumes of sediment in the interval between debris flows and can function as one of the dominant storage reservoirs for sediment in mountainous terrain. In an extensive investigation of 125 headwater streams, the spatial and temporal patterns of debris flow occurrence and deposition were investigated. The temporal distribution of debris flow occurrence varied with network structure and drainage area of the tributary basin. Network structure may affect the frequency of debris flows delivered to the mainstem river valley because it reflects the number of potential landslide source areas and the routing ability of the channel. Tributary basins with larger drainage areas and more convergent topography had a greater proportion of channels in the younger, post-debris flow age-classes compared to smaller basins with less convergent topography. The flux rate of material delivered to the confluence with the larger river also influenced the development of debris flow fans. Fans at the mouth of tributary basins with smaller drainage areas had a higher likelihood of being eroded in the interval between debris flows, while larger, more persistent fans were present at the mouth of bigger basins. Valley floor width of the mainstem river typically constrained fan development and was also an important predictor of fan size.

Attempting to manage these valuable resources to attain the greatest combination of benefits has created a long-term controversy that continues to the present. Our analysis indicates that at mid to large spatial scales, healthy riparian ecosystems and land management activities are not mutually exclusive, but the degree of compatibility is determined by policy decisions based on competing demands and pressing timelines as well as available scientific knowledge. Current management schemes on federal lands in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska are appropriately addressing large spatial scales and incorporating the principles of disturbance ecology. We found no scientific evidence that either the default prescriptions or the options for watershed analysis in the Northwest Forest Plan and Tongass Land Management Plan provide more protection than necessary to meet stated riparian management goals. We believe that additional alternative riparian management strategies could be implemented and evaluated in concert to shorten the time needed to realize effective strategies that fully meet riparian management goals.

Book excerpt: Sediment transport measurements on Flynn Creek, a headwater stream in the Oregon Coast Range, have illustrated the magnitude of fluvial transfer processes, primarily of the bedload component, during a moderate storm runoff season (1979 water year). The total dissolved solids concentration of storm runoff averaged 40 mg/L, and was independent of water discharge. Most particulate export from the 202 ha forested watershed occurred during the annual peak flow of 0.75 m3/sec-km2 (2-year return interval). Suspended load was the most important transport mode, with a total yield of 5.7 x l04 kg during the 24 h peak flow period. The export of coarse particulate organic matter during the same period was 1.5 x 103 kg. Bedload discharge, as measured with vortex tube and Helley-Smith samplers, occurred in pulses of short duration that did not necessarily coincide with peak streamflow. For the same 24 h storm runoff period, the total bedload yield at the mouth of the watershed was only 2.6 x 103 kg (particles> 0.25 mm), and consisted primarily of sand-size material. Bedload discharge at an upstream site (1.3 x 104 kg) was dominated by gravel-size particles. Channel morphology and in-stream obstructions (organic debris, fish trap) appear to cause significant spatial and temporal variations in sediment transport and streambed composition. Although streamflow was the principal variable controlling sediment transport, results suggest that supply limitations exist. The supply of transportable materials is dependent on the retention characteristics of the stream channel and on local hydraulic conditions. The discharge of both suspended solids and coarse particulate organic matter peaked early in the storm; however, pulses of the latter component on the recession limb appeared to be related to streambed disturbances. Bedload movement is an important process regulating both bed composition and particulate yields in this Coast Range stream. The Helley-smith sampler was the preferable method for use in streams having a large fraction of bedload in the sand-size range. The vortex tube trapped from 60-70% of the bedload sediment measured by an upstream Helley-smith sampler, with trapping efficiency of the former increasing as transport increased. The variability in bedload movement suggests that monitoring designs must address: (1) rapid temporal fluctuations in bedload discharge, (2) variations in bedload transport along a stream, (3) lateral variations in bedload discharge at a cross section, and (4) the type of sampler used.

Book excerpt: Few studies have examined both long-term and fine-scale spatial variations in water quality of small streams in the Pacific Northwest. As such, a case study was conducted to determine if current physical and chemical properties of water in three streams located in the Oregon Coast Range differed from historically measured conditions, taking differences in past management regimes into account. In addition, this research provides an assessment of spatial and temporal variability in nitratenitrogen (N) concentrations and summer stream temperatures within each catchment. The three research catchments were part of the Alsea Watershed Study (1959- 1973), where effects of forest management practices were examined using a pairedwatershed study design. One catchment, Needle Branch, was clear-cut with no protection provided to the stream. Harvesting in Needle Branch was followed by an intense broadcast burn to remove logging slash. Another catchment, Deer Creek, was patch-cut in three small units resulting in a 25% harvest of the total catchment area, but buffers were retained along fish-bearing streams. The third catchment, Flynn Creek, was used as a control. In this revisit to the Alsea Watersheds, measurements were conducted continuously (discharge, turbidity), intermittently (suspended sediments), and at regular intervals (nitrate-N) for one year between October 2005 and September 2006. Summertime stream temperature was also measured every half-hour from mid-June to mid-September. Comparisons of recent data with historic data show no detectable changes over time for streamflow characteristics (annual runoff volume, peak flow discharges, and number of low-flow days), annual sediment yield, or summer maximum stream temperatures. Current nitrate-N export was similar to historically measured values for Flynn Creek and Deer Creek; however, export at Needle Branch was increased over past levels. This observation may be caused by dense colonization of the riparian area with red alder (Alnus rubra), a N-fixing species, following the 1966 harvest. Patterns of nitrate-N concentration varied throughout each catchment and are likely influenced by the current distribution of red alder stands. Synoptically measured stream temperatures were variable along each stream's longitudinal profile. The ability to meet Oregon's water quality standard for temperature was dependent on measurement location and method of analysis. Evaluating individual sampling points as discrete records resulted in each stream exceeding the standard for at least one measurement location, whereas evaluating the criteria based on the mean of all data collected within the mainstem stream excluded Flynn Creek and Needle Branch from violation. These results highlight the physical and chemical variability of stream water draining Oregon Coast Range headwater catchments and provide insight as to where future work should be focused to gain a more thorough understanding of these dynamic systems.

Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to gain further understanding of the subsurface hydrology for a stream-adjacent riparian area in Western Oregon's Coast Range. Spatial and temporal fluctuations of the free water surface of a toeslope, adjacent riparian area, and stream channel in a forested terrace reach were monitored over a period of one year. A total of 27 piezometers were installed (nine in each of three transects established perpendicular to the stream) in a stream-adjacent terrace and hillslope. These piezometers were monitored from September 26, 1989 to July 25, 1990. Results indicate that the direction of flow within a forested terrace can vary throughout the year. During the drier months of September and October, flow direction was generally towards the stream. However, by November the direction of flow for those areas closest to the stream had begun to change. In some cases the direction of flow changed up to 180° from the September direction. The location of influent/effluent zones along the stream (i.e., zones along the stream where the terrace has a lower or higher hydraulic head than the stream, respectively) also varied throughout the year. During October, 1989 the furthest upvalley stream-adjacent piezometer had hydraulic heads greater than the stream for the entire month, while two other stream adjacent piezometers did not. During normal precipitation in January, 1990 both furthest upvalley and the middle stream-adjacent piezometers had hydraulic heads greater than the stream for the entire month. By July, 1990 only the middle stream-adjacent piezometer had a hydraulic head greater than the stream for the entire month, while the furthest upvalley piezometer had a higher head for 33% of the month and the hydraulic head of furthest downvalley piezometer never exceeded that of the stream. For the Deer Creek study site, subsurface velocities were estimated to be in the range of 10-8 to 10-11 m/s resulting in a 3.8 year minimum travel time for storm water to reach the stream. Thus, soil matrix velocities using the Darcy equation were not sufficient to generate stormflow. However, no overland flow was observed during storm events, indicating that alternative subsurface flow pathways, such as macrochannels, are being utilized. Previous research has suggested that the release of water from terrace storage in small headwater streams is no.t sufficient to maintain baseflow. The results of the Deer Creek study support this conclusion. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate that forested riparian areas are hydrologically complex with respect to both space and time and that oversimplification of these systems may lead to misinterpretation of other processes associated with subsurface water dynamics.
