Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few published studies of larval fish assemblages from unregulated, tidal freshwater rivers. Patterns in the spatial and temporal distribution of larval fishes in the Mattaponi River were examined. Sampling took place on a weekly basis from February through August, 2006 and 2007. Larval fishes were categorized by taxa, reproductive guild, and residency guild. Group comparisons using multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) indicated significant spatial and temporal differences in assemblage composition on multiple scales. Differences in assemblage composition were analyzed using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS). Interannual differences were attributable to anadromous and semi-migratory species. Seasonal differences were attributable to herrings, perches, and minnows. Both interannual and seasonal differences in assemblage composition may have been a result of changes in discharge. Spatial (i.e. longitudinal) variation of the larval fish assemblage differed by tidal regime. NMS and MRPP identified a distinct tidal freshwater larval fish assemblage. Tidal freshwater habitats may act as ecotones between marine and riverine ecosystems.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of five different collecting gears in sampling larval fishes associated with dikes and revetments. The tests were conducted on the Lower Mississippi River at mile 508.8 and miles 447-448. The five collecting gears used were: Plankton nets fished at discrete depths in the water column of a dike pool and the main channel; a push sled; a diaphragm pump; an electroshocker; and basket implants. These gears were used during the day and night to describe diel and temporal changes in the larval fish community in main channel, dike pool, dike, revetment, and sandbar habitats. The discrete depth net gear was effective in documenting the vertical, diel, and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton drift in the main channel and dike pool habitats. Similarities and differences in ichthyoplankton abundance and diversity occurred between habitats. The most notable observation was the comparable abundance among like depth strata between habitats in May. In June, the surface stratum at each habitat contained a far greater abundance of larvae than the samples collected at lower depths. The push sled was effective for sampling shallow water in the vicinity of sandbars. Use of the sled revealed diel and temporal differences in the shallow-water ichthyoplankton.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of larval fish was investigated in Dauphin Lake (51o 17'N, 99o 48'W) 283 km northwest of Winnipeg, Manitoba from May - August, 1984 and 1985. Larvae were sampled using dual fine mesh conical nets with non-porous mouth-reducing cones. Tweive species of larval fish were found, of which four species dominated in 1984: Notropis atherinoides, Perca flavescens, Etheostoma nigrum, and Percopsis omiscomaycus. Percina caprodes replaced P. omiscomaycus in 1985. Species composition varied, with. P. omiscomaycus dominating in late May and early June, P. flavescens and E. nigrum in late June and early July, and N. atherinoides mid July to early August. CPUE was greatest in the clay-silt habitat associated with rivers and lowest in the sandy and cobble habitats. Habitat type and temperature were major environmental factors influencing species distribution. Abundance of fish increased in close proximity to river mouths in early spring, and in mid-water during mid-summer. The hypothesis that the timing of appearance of pelagic larval fish jn Dauphin Lake is temperature controlled was supported. I found that (a) the time of appearance of larvae in early spring reflected the cold water (

Download or read book Migration Ecology of Marine Fishes written by David H. Secor and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A synthetic treatment of all marine fish taxa (teleosts and elasmobranchs), this book employs explanatory frameworks from avian and systems ecology while arguing that migrations are emergent phenomena, structured through schooling, phenotypic plasticity, and other collective agencies. The book provides overviews of the following concepts: The comparative movement ecology of fishes and birds; The alignment of mating systems with larval dispersal; Schooling and migration as adaptations to marine food webs; Natal homing; Connectivity in populations and metapopulations; The contribution of migration ecology to population resilience
