Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive filtering still receives attention in engineering as the use of the adaptive filter provides improved performance over the use of a fixed filter under the time-varying and unknown statistics environments. This application evolved communications, signal processing, seismology, mechanical design, and control engineering. The most popular optimization criterion in adaptive filtering is the well-known minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, which is, however, only optimal when the signals involved are Gaussian-distributed. Therefore, many "optimal solutions" under MMSE are not optimal. As an extension of the traditional MMSE, the minimum mean p-power error (MMPE) criterion has shown superior performance in many applications of adaptive filtering. This book aims to provide a comprehensive introduction of the MMPE and related adaptive filtering algorithms, which will become an important reference for researchers and practitioners in this application area. The book is geared to senior undergraduates with a basic understanding of linear algebra and statistics, graduate students, or practitioners with experience in adaptive signal processing. Key Features: Provides a systematic description of the MMPE criterion. Many adaptive filtering algorithms under MMPE, including linear and nonlinear filters, will be introduced. Extensive illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive filters with a large number of coefficients are usually involved in both network and acoustic echo cancellation. Consequently, it is important to improve the convergence rate and tracking of the conventional algorithms used for these applications. This can be achieved by exploiting the sparseness character of the echo paths. Identification of sparse impulse responses was addressed mainly in the last decade with the development of the so-called ``proportionate''-type algorithms. The goal of this book is to present the most important sparse adaptive filters developed for echo cancellation. Besides a comprehensive review of the basic proportionate-type algorithms, we also present some of the latest developments in the field and propose some new solutions for further performance improvement, e.g., variable step-size versions and novel proportionate-type affine projection algorithms. An experimental study is also provided in order to compare many sparse adaptive filters in different echo cancellation scenarios. Table of Contents: Introduction / Sparseness Measures / Performance Measures / Wiener and Basic Adaptive Filters / Basic Proportionate-Type NLMS Adaptive Filters / The Exponentiated Gradient Algorithms / The Mu-Law PNLMS and Other PNLMS-Type Algorithms / Variable Step-Size PNLMS Algorithms / Proportionate Affine Projection Algorithms / Experimental Study

Book excerpt: This book is aimed at presenting concepts, methods and algorithms ableto cope with undersampled and limited data. One such trend that recently gained popularity and to some extent revolutionised signal processing is compressed sensing. Compressed sensing builds upon the observation that many signals in nature are nearly sparse (or compressible, as they are normally referred to) in some domain, and consequently they can be reconstructed to within high accuracy from far fewer observations than traditionally held to be necessary. Apart from compressed sensing this book contains other related approaches. Each methodology has its own formalities for dealing with such problems. As an example, in the Bayesian approach, sparseness promoting priors such as Laplace and Cauchy are normally used for penalising improbable model variables, thus promoting low complexity solutions. Compressed sensing techniques and homotopy-type solutions, such as the LASSO, utilise l1-norm penalties for obtaining sparse solutions using fewer observations than conventionally needed. The book emphasizes on the role of sparsity as a machinery for promoting low complexity representations and likewise its connections to variable selection and dimensionality reduction in various engineering problems. This book is intended for researchers, academics and practitioners with interest in various aspects and applications of sparse signal processing.

Book excerpt: Adaptive Learning Methods for Nonlinear System Modeling presents some of the recent advances on adaptive algorithms and machine learning methods designed for nonlinear system modeling and identification. Real-life problems always entail a certain degree of nonlinearity, which makes linear models a non-optimal choice. This book mainly focuses on those methodologies for nonlinear modeling that involve any adaptive learning approaches to process data coming from an unknown nonlinear system. By learning from available data, such methods aim at estimating the nonlinearity introduced by the unknown system. In particular, the methods presented in this book are based on online learning approaches, which process the data example-by-example and allow to model even complex nonlinearities, e.g., showing time-varying and dynamic behaviors. Possible fields of applications of such algorithms includes distributed sensor networks, wireless communications, channel identification, predictive maintenance, wind prediction, network security, vehicular networks, active noise control, information forensics and security, tracking control in mobile robots, power systems, and nonlinear modeling in big data, among many others. This book serves as a crucial resource for researchers, PhD and post-graduate students working in the areas of machine learning, signal processing, adaptive filtering, nonlinear control, system identification, cooperative systems, computational intelligence. This book may be also of interest to the industry market and practitioners working with a wide variety of nonlinear systems. - Presents the key trends and future perspectives in the field of nonlinear signal processing and adaptive learning. - Introduces novel solutions and improvements over the state-of-the-art methods in the very exciting area of online and adaptive nonlinear identification. - Helps readers understand important methods that are effective in nonlinear system modelling, suggesting the right methodology to address particular issues.

The concept of adaptation is emphasized in the Adaptation in Wireless Communications Series through a unified framework across all layers of the wireless protocol stack ranging from the physical layer to the application layer, and from cellular systems to next-generation wireless networks. This specific volume, Adaptive Signal Processing in Wireless Communications is devoted to adaptation in the physical layer. It gives an in-depth survey of adaptive signal processing techniques used in current and future generations of wireless communication systems. Featuring the work of leading international experts, it covers adaptive channel modeling, identification and equalization, adaptive modulation and coding, adaptive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and cooperative diversity. It also addresses other important aspects of adaptation in wireless communications such as hardware implementation, reconfigurable processing, and cognitive radio. A second volume in the series, Adaptation and Cross-layer Design in Wireless Networks(cat no.46039) is devoted to adaptation in the data link, network, and application layers.

Book excerpt: This book presents the design, analysis, and application of nonlinear adaptive filters with the goal of improving efficient performance (ie the convergence speed, steady-state error, and computational complexity). The authors present a nonlinear adaptive filter, which is an important part of nonlinear system and digital signal processing and can be applied to diverse fields such as communications, control power system, radar sonar, etc. The authors also present an efficient nonlinear filter model and robust adaptive filtering algorithm based on the local cost function of optimal criterion to overcome non-Gaussian noise interference. The authors show how these achievements provide new theories and methods for robust adaptive filtering of nonlinear and non-Gaussian systems. The book is written for the scientist and engineer who are not necessarily an expert in the specific nonlinear filtering field but who want to learn about the current research and application. The book is also written to accompany a graduate/PhD course in the area of nonlinear system and adaptive signal processing.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy systems and data mining are now an essential part of information technology and data management, with applications affecting every imaginable aspect of our daily lives. This book contains 81 selected papers from those accepted and presented at the 2nd international conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM2016), held in Macau, China, in December 2016. This annual conference focuses on 4 main groups of topics: fuzzy theory, algorithm and system; fuzzy applications; the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining; and data mining, and the event provided a forum where more than 100 qualified, high-level researchers and experts from over 20 countries, including 4 keynote speakers, gathered to create an important platform for researchers and engineers worldwide to engage in academic communication. All the papers collected here present original ideas, methods and results of general significance supported by clear reasoning and compelling evidence, and as such the book represents a valuable and wide ranging reference resource of interest to all those whose work involves fuzzy systems and data mining.
