Book excerpt: At the time of the Spanish conquest, Honduras was inhabited by two distinct social systems, which defined the boundary between the cultures of Mesoamerica and South America. Each system was administered in a different way, and subsequently the survival of each civilization varied markedly. This study examines the nature of each culture at the time of Spanish conquest, the size of the populations, and the method of colonization applied to each. Particular attention is focused on Spanish economic activities and the institutions that directly affected the Indian way of life. Dr. Newson bases her findings on extensive archival research conducted in Spain, Guatemala, and Honduras and on archaeological, ethnographic, and linguistic evidence found in secondary sources.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Honduras: Its Rivers, Lagoons, Savannas, Mountains, Minerals, Forests, Fish, Game, Agricultural Products, Fruits, Transportation and Natives Central America occupies that portion of the globe lying between North and South America and between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Geographically, its northwestern extremity is at the Isthmus of Tehnantepec and its southwestern extremity at the Isthmus of Panama. Politically, it includes the British colony of Belize and five independent Republics. One of the largest three is the Republic of Honduras. To the west of Honduras lie the Republics of Guatemala and Salvador, to the south of it Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The area of Honduras is about five thousand square miles larger than that of the State of Pennsylvania. Its northern coast line is about 350 miles long. Its southern coast line nearly surrounds the Bay of Fonseca. and is seventy miles long. The surface is generally mountainous, but the central part of the Republic consists of a large plateau of 3,000 to 4,000 feet elevation above sea level. The country is drained by a number of rivers, the largest of which are the Ulna, the Aguan and the Patuca. Patuca River rises in the south central portion of the Republic, flows in a general northeast direction for a distance of 300 miles, and empties into the Caribbean Sea. It is the largest river between the Mississippi and the Magdalena. The highest mountain ranges are in the northern and western parts of the country. The highest peak is Mount Congrehoi, near the north coast, which rises more than 8,000 feet above sea level. The entire country, excepting only the higher mountain peaks, is covered either with a dense tropical growth, or with tall grasses. The alluvial soils of the valleys sustain a jungle, the hills and mountain sides a heavy growth of valuable hard woods and the plateaus comprise ideal grazing grounds. The mountains are rich in minerals. Gold, silver, copper, coal, iron and opals exist in abundance. The modern history of Honduras dates back to the landing of Columbus on its north coast in 1502. That it was earlier peopled by a progressive race is shown in its vast ruins, the most noted of which are to be found in the department of Copan, and also near Catacamas, in the valley of the Patuca. Columbus laid claim to the country for the crown of Spain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The country is known for its stunning natural beauty, including tropical rain forests, mountain ranges, and the Caribbean Sea. Honduras was once home to the ancient Maya civilization, whose ruins can still be seen across the country today. Despite its natural beauty and cultural heritage, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. The country faces many challenges, including high levels of inequality, political unrest, and violence. However, in recent years, Honduras has started to make progress towards improving its economy and reducing poverty. The country has also become an increasingly popular destination for tourists, thanks to its incredible natural beauty and friendly people.

Book Synopsis Working Hard, Drinking Hard by : Adrienne Pine
Download or read book Working Hard, Drinking Hard written by Adrienne Pine and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-05-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Honduras is violent." Adrienne Pine situates this oft-repeated claim at the center of her vivid and nuanced chronicle of Honduran subjectivity. Through an examination of three major subject areas—violence, alcohol, and the export-processing (maquiladora) industry—Pine explores the daily relationships and routines of urban Hondurans. She views their lives in the context of the vast economic footprint on and ideological domination of the region by the United States, powerfully elucidating the extent of Honduras's dependence. She provides a historically situated ethnographic analysis of this fraught relationship and the effect it has had on Hondurans' understanding of who they are. The result is a rich and visceral portrait of a culture buffeted by the forces of globalization and inequality.

Book Synopsis Culture and Customs of Honduras by : Janet N. Gold
Download or read book Culture and Customs of Honduras written by Janet N. Gold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive look at contemporary life in the small Latin American nation allows high school students and general readers to explore the many facets of Honduran life and culture. More and more Hondurans and scholars today are becoming aware of the diversity in the nation, and are realizing that rather than a single, homogeneous culture, Honduras is made up of many different cultures. Gold incorporates this contemporary cultural consciousness in her treatment of Honduras's regional and linguistic diversity as well as in her descriptions of Honduras's indigenous communities. Key elements of the work include a look at national identity and cultural diversity, as well as an in-depth study of indigenous Honduras. Other chapters examine religion, as well as daily routines, cuisine, dress, media, sports, festivals, literature and oral storytelling, traditional crafts, visual arts, and music and dance. Ideal for high school students studying world culture, Latin American studies, and anthropology, as well as for general readers interested in the subject, Culture and Customs of Honduras is an essential addition for library shelves.
