Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding's Golf Guide, 1920 All of the important golf championships were revived in the United States during/ the season of 1919. The national amateur was played on the course at Oakmont, a suburb of Pittsburgh; the women s championship at Shawnee ou-the-delaware, and the national open at Brae Burn, a course of the Bos ton district. The latter, played ih June, was within the publication dates of the golf guide of 1919 and a complete summary and story of the con test appeared in that issue. It was a sensational struggle in which Walter C. Hagen of Oakland Hills, Detroit, won from Mike Brady by a single stroke, after Hagen had tied a five-stroke lead which Brady had established. Hagen's victory came to him in the play-off with 77 to 78, a finish which golfers never ceased to discuss the remainder of the season, especially those golfers who had been fortunate to see the competition. The sectional championships also were played. There was the Western open, the Western women's, the championships of the far-off Pacific slope, those of Canada, later the California schedule, and in the winter interest in golf on the Southern courses was far beyond records of other years, and very likely much exceeding the expectations of the originators of the various tournaments. For while it was surely anticipated that some day golf would be played with increased interest, as would become any sport which was being revived after the bitter experience of war, it seemed an optimistic thought, far too wide reaching, to imagine that it would more than recover its normal status in the very first year of peace. Yet it is truthful to say: that it did. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding's Athletic Library Golf Guide, 1921: Containing the Newly-Revised Rules With Interpretations Of the United States national golf champions who began the season of 1920 modestly wearing their honors and sturdily striving to retain them as competition started for supremacy in another year, only one was successful. The woman triumphed. Miss Alexa Stirling of Atlanta retained her title as the champion woman golfer of the United States, and won in addition the championship of Canada as well as the championship of the South. She played excellent golf all season. Her combined skill and knowledge of the game and her perseverance and faithful application to the task which she had set for herself made her game of golf an admirable creation. She has not lost a match since 1915, when she was defeated on the twenty-second hole in the semi-final round by Mrs. Clarence H. Vanderbeck of the Phila delphia Cricket Club, who won the title that year. Miss Stirling has won the national women's championship three times in succession and has been victor for three times in the Southern championship. Whatever difference of opinion may exist as to the personal abilities of the men golfers of the United States - the leaders of men golfers - among the women there seems to be no disapproving nor dissenting voice to the acknowledgment of Miss Stirling's superiority. The women golfers of the United States have said there is no woman who can defeat her. There may be some player who will overcome this Georgia girl at some time in her career, if Miss Stirling continues to play until she is forced to admit defeat, but none seemed to approximate that possibility during the past sea-son. The women players of the United States have called her the Glorious Golfing Girl, a fanciful title appropriately bestowed. F rom abroad there came that stout-hearted and stout-muscled player of Great Britain, Ted Ray, to take away the open championship. There were American golfers at Inverness, where the championship was played, who had their chance, but they were not quite equal to the game of the power ful professional of the land across the sea. It was a close battle. Vardon was in the thick of it for awhile, as well as his contemporary, with whom he was speeding through the country; Leo Diegel, Jock Hutchison and Jack Burke spurred the victor to his very best, and his very best was just a little too much for them. Whiter Hagen, former holder of the title, was vanquished, but he played well except for one unfortunate round. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the golf ball and how it has affected the game, especially club development and the rules. From the feather ball era in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the gutty ball era of the 1850s to the rubber-cored (modern) ball era this book literally takes you "inside" the ball with fascinating details of all aspects of the golf ball. It covers the development of rules pertaining to weight and size--details that were contested in America and Britain for nearly 50 years, and how ball makers sought to make the ball travel further, move straighter and stand up to the most punishing strokes. Until 1920 there was no size or weight restrictions to the ball. Thereafter maufacturors had to conform to the specifications, otherwise the ball was deemed illegal. The American and British golfing authorities could not agree on dimensions so for nearly 50 years there were 2 'legal' balls played either side of the Atlantic. Ball makers have long sought to make the ball travel further, move straighter and to provide protection to the ball from poorly executed shots. This book shows how manfucaturing techniques have evolved from stuffing feathers into a leather sack in the seventeenth century to hydraulic presses and spraying booths in the early twentieth century. The balls' cover patterns were designed to improve their flight characteristics and these ranged from stars, diamonds and pimples to the round dimple (today's standard) that was patented in the early twentieth century. The author has made extensive use of the data recorded at the many golf memorabilia sales since the early 1980s. He also records many of the prices paid at auction for golf balls.
