His motives seem like galactic domination at first but turn out to be quite the contrary, with the looming threat of a dark menace in the shadows waiting to emerge. As the mission progresses, nothing begins to be so clear-cut and so black-and-white, with many choices and decisions being ambiguous and having lasting repercussions for the galaxy.

Book excerpt: With the advent of the Superconducting Super Collider and other new technologies, coupled with the development of particle astrophysics and other non-accelerator based physics, research in high energy particle physics in the nineties promises to break into new and exciting frontiers. To chart the directions and opportunities for this new decade, the 1990 Summer Study on High Energy Physics was organized in Snowmass, Colorado. Like previous Snowmass Summer Studies, it plays a key role in shaping research directions and in drawing the particle physics community together. This book of the proceedings examines the full spectrum of important scientific issues and opportunities in high energy particle physics in the decade of the 1990's, including research at existing and anitcipated hadron-hadron, e+e-, and ep colliders; research at fixed-target facilities; the scientific potential of possible new facilities such as B factories; particle astrophysics and non-accelerator based physics; and accelerator and detector initiatives. It also discusses the physics and technical aspects of the initial Superconducting Super Collider experimental program. This volume, therefore, offers a captivating glimpse into the future of high energy physics, and makes essential reading for all physicists interested in assessing the exciting new research opportunities the future technologies would bring.

THE SHADOW OF HEAVENLY THINGS, the second in the series, traces the development of Cogs unexpected ministry, and the furtherance of his remarkable powers and healing abilities. In WAR OF THE THIRD HEAVEN, the epic comes to a stunning climax as Cog struggles to determine his ultimate destiny amid the cataclysmic events at the end of the Age of Man. Emrys was created experimentally to be double-sexed, and can change sexes at will, via a telepathic command. The Andromeda Incident (or Out of Chaos Comes Hope!) tells all about the mixed-up life Emrys lives, and his adventures and misadventures in the 12th. and 21st. centuries. Wander the universe with Emrys as he uses a time/space continuum device to journey to the devastated planets of Mars and Earth, just before both human and alien-caused cataclysmic events occur. This startling adventure was 900 years in the making!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was home and family like in Paleolithic Europe? How did mobile hunter-gatherer families live, work, and play together in the fourteenth millennium BP? What were the functional and spatial constraints and markers of their domesticity—the processes that create and sustain a household? Despite the long recognized absence of comprehensive archaeological data on such ancient homes and hearths, the archaeologists in this volume begin unraveling the domesticity of the Upper Paleolithic by drawing on both an immense trove of new material evidence and comparative site data, and a range of incisive and illuminating ethnographic analogies, theoretical models, and simulations. Five Late Magdalenian sites from the Paris Basin and one later Azilian site provide striking evidence of well preserved camps of short duration, situated on valley bottoms and buried by gentle floods. Of particular interest and value is the site of Verberie, rich in lithic tools, faunal remains, hearts, and other indicators of spatial organization, which has been excavated continuously for twenty-six years by the same director and provides an unparalleled source of information on Paleolithic domesticity. The first group of essays and reports look at the technology and demographic evidences of domesticity; the second set seeks clues to the spatial patterning of Paleolithic households; while the final essays draw on ethnographic analogies to reconstruct and interpret gendered divisions of labor, perishable technologies, and other activities not directly recognizable from archaeological remains.
