Schon im frühen Kindesalter werden diese mit Büchern, Kassetten oder CDs und dem Fernsehen konfrontiert. Die Medien sind also schon in den ersten Sozialisationsphasen eines jeden Menschen vorhanden und beeinflussen ihn. Je mehr Medien genutzt werden und je häufiger dies geschieht, um so stärker ist der Einfluss. Doch dieser ist nicht, wie oft behauptet negativ, sondern bringt viele neue Medienkompetenzen für die Nutzer mit sich. Laut Schorb, Mohn und Theunert besteht ein Zusammenhang zwischen Sozialisation und Medien, der sich aus drei Perspektiven her betrachten lässt. Zum einen sind die Massenmedie wichtige Faktoren, die Einstellungen, Urteile und Wissen und teilweise auch das Verhalten der Menschen beeinflussen. Zum anderen lassen sich die Medien selbst als fremdbestimmte Instrumente der Sozialisation nutzen, als Hilfsmittel der Enkulturation, also der Übertragung des in einer Gesellschaft für verbindlich erachteten Wissens- und Normenkanons. Als letzten Punkt stellen die Forscher fest, dass sich die Medien als selbstbestimmte Instrumente der Sozialisation, als Mittel zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung und Artikulation im sozialen Umfeld nutzen lassen. (vgl. Schorb, Mohn, Theunert 1998, S. 624). Im folgenden wird die Sozialisation durch die Medien beispielhaft anhand der Musik (der Nutzung des Radios) und des Lesens von Büchern dargestellt, wobei die besonderen Einflüsse von formellen und informellen Sozialisationsinstanzen wie der Familie, der Schule und der peer group näher betrachtet werden. Außerdem werden einige Gründe aufgezeigt, warum Jugendliche zu bestimmten Medien greifen und die Medienkompetenzen (das Populärkulturelle Kapital), die sie dadurch erlangen können.

Im Jugendalter geschieht die Ablösung von den Eltern und die Hinwendung zur Gruppe der Gleichaltrigen zu einem großen Teil über Medien. So nutzen Jugendliche digitale Medien zum Aufbau und zur Pflege von sozialen Beziehungen. Die Selbstdarstellung und gleichzeitig das Feedback von (virtuellen) Freunden trägt wesentlich zur Herausbildung und Formung der jugendlichen identitäten bei. Medien sind deshalb neben Familie, Schule und Peer-Group eine wichtige "Sozialisationsinstanz".
