Dabei steht meist die ökologische Seite des Begriffs im Vordergrund. Doch neben der ebenfalls nicht weniger wichtigen ökonomischen Facette, stellt die soziale Nachhaltigkeit den dritten Kernpunkt des Nachhaltigkeitsbegriffes dar. Dieser Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit wird gegenwärtig eher weniger beachtet und oftmals sogar als unbedeutend eingestuft. Diesen Umstand nimmt die hier vorliegende Arbeit zum Anlass und erhebt in Kooperation mit dem Nachhaltigkeitsnetzwerk "NAThüringen" die Einstellung von 281 Thüringer Unternehmen zum Thema soziale Nachhaltigkeit. Betrachtet wird dabei zunächst der Aufwand, den die Betriebe in interne und externe soziale Aktivitäten investieren. Es folgen Fragen zum erwarteten wEinfluss sozialen Engagements auf verschiedene betriebswirtschaftliche Indikatoren, der Motivation zu deren Umsetzung sowie Kenntnissen hinsichtlich konkreter Zertifikate und Auszeichnungen in diesem Bereich. In Verbindung mit einer grafischen Auswertung der Umfrageergebnisse werden zahlreiche Vorschläge unterbreitet, wie sich Unternehmen zielgerichtet und messbar sozial engagieren können. Die zusammengetragenen Preise, Auszeichnungen, Zertifikate und Wettbewerbe werden auch jeweils hinsichtlich ihrer Eignung zur Aufnahme in die NAThüringen-Teilnahmevoraussetzungen, im Sinne einer effizienten Vernetzung von Betrieben in Thüringen geprüft. Ein zusammenfassendes Fazit, welches auch Ansätze für weitere Studien enthält und Zukunftsausblicke bietet, beschließt die Arbeit.

Da das Thema Nachhaltigkeit in den letzten Jahren in der öffentlichen Debatte an Gewicht gewonnen hat, sind nun auch Unternehmen gefordert, sich dieser Problematik zu stellen. Eine Studie der Unternehmensberatung Arthur D. Little aus den Jahren 1997/1998 mit ca. 500 Vorständen, Geschäftsführern und anderen hochrangigen Entscheidungsträgern zeigte schon damals die hohe Relevanz des Themas für Unternehmen: 95 Prozent der Befragten sahen Nachhaltigkeit als bedeutende Fragestellung an, während immerhin noch 82 Prozent deren hohen potenziellen Beitrag zum Unternehmenswert erkannten. Konkrete Geschäftsmaßnahmen leiteten indes nur 17 Prozent der Teilnehmer ab. Diese Ergebnisse veranschaulichen unmittelbar die aktuelle unternehmerische Herausforderung: Das Leitbild Nachhaltigkeit ist zwar ins Bewusstsein der Wirtschaft vorgedrungen, wird jedoch bislang nicht ausreichend realisiert. Wie aber können Unternehmen ihre betrieblichen Abläufe nachhaltig gestalten, ohne dabei an Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu verlieren? Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit versucht zu zeigen, wie Unternehmen Nachhaltigkeit auf wirtschaftlich vorteilhafte Weise in ihr Tagesgeschäft integrieren können und welche Umsetzungsinstrumente sich hierbei als besonders wirkungsvoll erweisen. Gewiss weißt jedes Unternehmen branchenspezifische, größenbedingte sowie individuelle Merkmale auf, sodass eine verallgemeinernde Betrachtung schwierig ist. Ebenso würde eine erschöpfende Aufzählung unternehmerischer Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen sicherlich den Rahmen einer Bachelorarbeit sprengen. Diese Arbeit versucht vielmehr, bestimmte Konzepte und Handlungsmöglichkeiten näher zu beleuchten, welche branchenübergreifend anwendbar sind und in der Literatur besonders hervorgehoben werden.
