Im Laufe des Textes werde ich die Auswirkungen dieser Ansätze auf die Soziale Arbeit erörtern und sowohl ihre Potenziale als auch ihre Grenzen aufzeigen.

Much of the social work literature addresses questions of theory and ethics separately, so that the body of thought that is represented in social work scholarship and research creates a distinction between them. However, the differences between these categories of thought can be somewhat arbitrary. This volume goes beyond this simple separation of categories. Although it recognises that questions of theory and ethics may be addressed distinctly, the connections between them can be made evident and drawn out by analysing them alongside each other. Social work's use and development of theory can be understood in two complementary ways. First, theory from the social sciences and other disciplines can be applied for social work; second, considered, systematic examinations of practice have enabled theory to be developed out of social work. These different approaches are usually referred to as 'theory for practice' and 'practice theory'. The advancement of social work theory occurs often through the interplay between these two dimensions, through research and scholarship in the field. Similarly, social work ethics draw on principles and concepts that have their roots in philosophical inquiry and also involve applied analysis in the particular issues with which social workers engage and their practices in doing so. Book excerpt: There are two tendencies in present public discussions.Social problems have their causes in the individual, and are thus not a problem of socio-economic inequality. Consequently, we find an increasing policy in Europe of selfactivation and self-help as substitutes of social work. On the other hand, new types of social vulnerability and challenges for social work and social policy are detected which are discussed in the book in their European dimensions. Beginning in the last century in Europe, processes of social exclusion are discussed as common phenomena of the crisis in social welfare systems. They have their origins in the radical changes in paid employment, the weakening of family ties, and the increasing incapability of the welfare state to promote social inclusion. New types of ,social vulnerabilities’ are emerging - containing chances as well as risks. They are discussed in two ways. On the one hand the implementation of indicator-based management systems of social services is attempted, which implies a range of chances and risks in ethical and professional self-image. On the other hand there are self-help movements, social networks and other social types of resilience – which are often a complement or support to Social Work. Yet there is a policy to substitute Social Work by a strategy of self-activation. Both developments are signs of the present and indicators of the future of Social Work. They show the necessity of clarifying the social and political scopes and prospects of Social Work in societies at the crossroads of enhancing civility, human development and social security or overburden the vulnerable, who face new dimensions of psychological, ecological and economic distress. This book is an attempt to bring together several European discussions concerning Social Work and social politics.

Die Philosophie der Lebenskunst ist keine Verklärung, das Leben zur Luxusversion zu machen, es soll die Menschen ihr Leben als Kunstwerk betrachten lassen, das sie bewusst selbst gestalten können und in welchem sie mit allen Erfahrungen umgehen können. Hauptvertreter ist der bekannte Philosoph Wilhelm Schmid, sein Standartwerk Philosophie der Lebenskunst ist der Ursprung dieser Arbeit. Eine theoretische Sicht auf das gute Leben ist die Grundlage der Lebenskunst und führt deshalb im ersten Kapitel darauf hin. Die Geschichte der Philosophie der Lebenskunst wird dann durch verschiedene Philosophen aufgezeigt und im zweiten Schritt wird die Ethik auf den gesellschaftlichen Rahmen übertragen. Um das Konzept der Lebenskunst auf die Beratungssituation in Kapitel vier zu übertragen wird im Vorhinein die Soziale Arbeit und die Ethik des Guten Lebens wie auch die Berufsethik dargestellt.
