Book Synopsis Soviet Theater Nuclear Capabilities by : Robert F. Kennedy

Book excerpt: This memorandum examined the changing strategic and theater nuclear environment; Soviet theater nuclear force improvements and doctrine; the implications of Soviet theater nuclear buildup for deterrence and the defense of Europe; and NATO's response. The author concludes that the changing balance of theater capabilities has resulted in a devaluation of deterrence, a decline in Western self-confidence, and an increase in NATO's vulnerabilities. The author also contends that if the Soviet Union is unwilling to negotiate a significant reduction intermediate-range nuclear forces that now pose a serious threat to the West, the NATO deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles will not only help to restore balance to the NATO/Warsaw Pact nuclear equation, but will also enhance deterrence, reduce NATO's vulnerabilities, and thus, will contribute to crisis stability in Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. strategic nuclear policy debate has for years been marked by confusion and chaos. Despite the investment of considerable analytic effort, planners remain deeply divided on basic issues relating to budgets, force structure choices, employment strategies, arms control concepts, and the like. This basic dilemma is as follows. On the one hand, nuclear weapons cannot serve national objectives in the same ways that other military forces can. On the other hand, like it or not, both the United States and Soviet Union maintain large nuclear forces, and, for reasons I will list it is imperative to plan for their use.

Book Synopsis The Soviet Far East Military Buildup by : Richard H. Solomon
Download or read book The Soviet Far East Military Buildup written by Richard H. Solomon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1986, examines the challenges the United States faced in maintaining a strong nuclear deterrence capability in the Far East without giving rise to political tensions among its allies. The Soviet aggression in the region, shown in the invasion of Afghanistan and the shooting down of a Korean airliner, demonstrated the need for a Western counterbalance, but the Asian nations were wary of becoming pawns in a nuclear power play between the superpowers. This book evaluates the meaning of Moscow’s military buildup in the global context; analyses the impact of the buildup from the perspective of China, Korea, Japan, the nations of ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand; explores the interaction of the buildup with the unresolved conflict on the Korean peninsula; and assesses the European experience with the Soviet nuclear threat and examines its implications for Asia. It also evaluates the linkages between European and Asian security.

Book Synopsis Battlefield Nuclear Weapons by : Stephen D. Biddle
Download or read book Battlefield Nuclear Weapons written by Stephen D. Biddle and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1989 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battlefield nuclear weapons (BNW) have become a major Alliance concern. In the wake of the INF Treaty, the superpower summit at Reykjavik, and the proposals of Mikhail Gorbachev, NATO is reevaluating nearly every aspect of its defense posture. This book is designed to contribute to that reevaluation by analyzing what deterrent value BNW have, and whether they offer the military capability necessary to offset the potential damage to Alliance cohesion. To help sort out answers to these questions, CSIA held a conference on BNW, organized by fellows Stephen Biddle and Peter Feaver. This paper, in presenting the results of that conference, has three purposes: to introduce the issues raised by BNW in the post-INF era, to present a survey of the specialist debate, and to analyze the disagreements underlying the debate. Co-published with Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard University.

It is the first comprehensive analysis of the subject ever to be published in the English language.
