For the Soviets the art is the scientific skill of planning and conducting the interlinked engagements, strikes, and maneuvers that comprise the modern naval operation. The Soviets exercise naval operational art according to principles of the art which the Soviets emphasize with a stiff formalism that can be exploited by the West. This study describes the art and its style and suggests Soviet naval war fighting scenarios based on the application of the principle of naval operational art.

Book Synopsis Operation Don's Main Attack by : David M. Glantz
Download or read book Operation Don's Main Attack written by David M. Glantz and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the defeat and destruction of German Sixth Army at Stalingrad all but certain at the end of 1942, the war on the Eastern Front took a definitive turn as the Germans struggled to erect a new defensive front to halt the Soviet juggernaut driving west. Operation Don’s Main Attack is the first detailed study of the dramatic clash of armies that followed, unfolding inexorably over the course of two months across an expanse of more than 1,600 kilometers. Using recently released Russian archival material never before available to researchers, David M. Glantz provides a close-up account, from both sides, of the planning and conduct of Operation Don—the Soviet offensive by the Red Army's Southern front that aimed to capture Rostov in January–February 1943. His book includes a full array of plans, candid daily reports, situation maps, and strength and casualty reports prepared for the forces that participated in the offensive at every level. Drawing on an unprecedented and comprehensive range of documents, the book delves into many hitherto forbidden topics, such as unit strengths and losses and the foibles and attitudes of command cadre. Glantz’s work also presents rare insights into the military strategy, combat tactics, and operational art of such figures as Generals Eremenko and Malinovsky and Field Marshal Erich von Manstein. A uniquely informed study of a critical but virtually forgotten Soviet military operation, Operation Don’s Main Attack offers a fresh perspective on the nature of the twentieth century’s most terrible of wars.

Book Synopsis Roots Of Soviet Victory: The Application Of Operational Art On The Eastern Front, 1942-1943 by : Major James R. Howard
Download or read book Roots Of Soviet Victory: The Application Of Operational Art On The Eastern Front, 1942-1943 written by Major James R. Howard and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis considers the extent to which Soviet ascendancy over Germany by late 1943 can be attributed to a resurgence of operational art. Discussion begins with an overview of operational art and the development of the theory up to 1937. It explains the significant differences between Soviet and western terminology and discusses the writings of key Russian and Soviet theorists, as well as the opinions of contemporary historians. The thesis proceeds to examine two campaigns. First, the Soviet Winter 1942-43 offensives and German counteroffensives. This period saw the surrender of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad but ended in operational defeat for the Red Army. Turning to the campaigns of summer 1943 that began with Operation CITADEL, the thesis examines the struggle better known as the Battle of Kursk. This study includes the Soviet 1943 summer offensives and concludes in October 1943, by which time the Germans had suffered a significant operational and strategic defeat. The thesis analyses the extent to which the reemergence of operational art was responsible for the reversal in Soviet fortunes. It also discusses other factors that contributed to Soviet success and to German failures.
Book Synopsis G.S. Isserson and the War of the Future by : G.S. Isserson
Download or read book G.S. Isserson and the War of the Future written by G.S. Isserson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgii Samoilovich Isserson (1898-1976) was one of the most prescient and prolific authors on military art in the years preceding World War II. His theories greatly influenced the Red Army's conduct of operations and were instrumental in achieving victory over Germany. This book gathers together for the first time English translations of Isserson's most influential works, including some that are still classified. His writings on the preparation and conduct of the deep offensive operation--the deployment of tanks, mechanized infantry, air power and airborne troops to penetrate deeply echeloned defenses--also serve as a primer on how to construct a position to defeat such an attack. His well argued defense of the deep operation based on an examination of recent wars and his reminiscences about the people and events that shaped Soviet military theory in the 1930s are included.

Download or read book The Basic Principles of Operational Art and Tactics written by V. Ye Savkin and published by . This book was released on 2002-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basic Principles of Operational Art and Tactics was translated and published under the auspices of the United States Air Force. The original Russian edition was published by the Military Publishing House of the Ministry of Defense in the USSR.The author, Colonel Vasiliy Yefisovich Savkin, has served on the faculty of the Frunze Military Academy. As a candidate of Military Science he has written several military affairs articles and authored at least two earlier books.According to Soviet military theorists, operational art and tactics are two of the three components of military art. The third is strategy. Operational art is the connecting link between strategy and tactics, and is called on to work out the theory and practice of preparing and conducting contemporary operations. This book, focusing on operational art and tactics, does not deal with either doctrine, which represents the official Soviet view of the nature of a future war, or strategy, since the most important aspect of strategy is policy. In U.S. terms the book treats operations, tactics, laws of war and laws of armed conflict.
