Book Synopsis India and the Soviet Union by : Santosh K. Mehrotra
Download or read book India and the Soviet Union written by Santosh K. Mehrotra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India was the Soviet Union's most important trading partner among the less developed countries (LDCs) and the largest recipient of Soviet aid to non-socialist LDCs. Similarly the Soviet Union is one of India's largest trade partners. In this 1991 book, Santosh Mehrotra presents a comprehensive study of this trading relationship and the transfer of technology from the Soviet Union. He begins by outlining Indian economic strategy since the 1950s and the role of Soviet and East European technical assistance. Part II examines Soviet technological transfer to India since 1955. The final chapters analyse Indo-Soviet trade in the 1970s and 1980s, covering payment arrangements and bilateral trading. The book is an exhaustive analysis of economic relations between an industrialised planned economy and a developing market economy. It will therefore become essential reading for students and specialists of development economics and international relations as well as for government and institutional economists in international trade and finance.

Book Synopsis Bread and the Ballot by : Dennis Merrill
Download or read book Bread and the Ballot written by Dennis Merrill and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1990 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recently declassified government documents, Merrill examines U.S. foreign economic policy toward India from its independence to President Kennedy's assassination. He considers the politics, ideology, and functioning of the large economic assistance effort in India, and also provides insights into the failures of U.S. economic strategies in the Third World during the Cold War. According to Merrill, rapid growth of aid to nonaligned India began during the Eisenhower Administration, which declared the policy of the United States to convince "people in the less developed areas that there is a way of life by which they can have bread and the ballot." The volume also includes Indian views on relevant economic and political issues. ISBN 0-8078-1920-4: $39.95.

Book Synopsis The Soviet-Indian Alignment by : Robert H. Donaldson
Download or read book The Soviet-Indian Alignment written by Robert H. Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union has invested in India a large volume of material resources and diplomatic energy; the available evidence on the Soviet-Indian relationship in recent years, however, leads to the conclusion that the return of this Soviet investment, in terms of observable political influence, has been small. Since 1967, there appear to have been only three cases in which Moscow was able to cause New Delhi to do something which it would not have done otherwise. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the Soviet Union has been rebuffed in its efforts to influence Indian behavior. In some cases there is an evident and mutual disposition to discuss differences in private to limit the impact of disagreements on a relationship both sides value highly. Indian decision makers perceive a well-defined need for Soviet support in both military and economic spheres, but India's growing self-reliance places definite limits on her perceived need of the Soviet Union. For its part, Moscow perceives that the special relationship with India has brought diplomatic and commercial benefits which the Soviets are reluctant to jeopardize. The evolution of Indo-Soviet relations has resulted in a symbiosis, but one in which the balance of dependency has changed dramatically. Developments since 1971 suggest that Soviet importance to India and its ability to influence Indian decisions peaked during the Indo-Pakistan crisis and have subsequently declined, whereas the Indian ability to exert influence in Moscow may be growing.
Book Synopsis Indian Economic Policy and Development by : P. T. Bauer
Download or read book Indian Economic Policy and Development written by P. T. Bauer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Bauer’s book, first published in 1961, reviews the major elements of contemporary official Indian development policy, considers their economic implications and their probable political and economic results. He then examines alternative approaches to the promotion of development. The development plans, notably the Second Five Year Plan and the official outlines of the Third Plan, receive major attention, but the author also considers other official policies and measures affecting economic development, which do not usually figure prominently in the formal development plans. Specific themes which Professor Bauer considers are: the influence of social customs and attitudes on economic progress; the relationship between investment expenditure and economic development; inter-relationships between agriculture and industry; the heavy industry programme; the controls over the private section; the relation of Plan finance to the foreign exchange crisis; the role of foreign aid; and the importance of certain major political objectives.
