Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With taut, rigorous technique, Bonnie Larson Staiger tells a love story about the place and people of the northern plains, examining a variety of themes including long-lived relationships and an appreciation of landscape. "Bonnie Larson Staiger's superb new collection of poems is an eloquent language-map of a profound relationship with a particular place-its geography, history, climate, and inhabitants. By turns deeply moving and laugh-out-loud funny, these stunning poems dance us through the terrain of this relationship not of convenience-certainly 'risk-amputation-from-frostbite freaking cold' is anything but convenient-but of clear-eyed commitment. Her poems introduce us to the neighbors: 'the woman who always wears lilac perfume,' the roughneck 'who once found a guy's boots-his feet still inside,' and the meadowlark singing her 'throaty matins.' They show us that to stand rooted, even against 'incessant wind,' brings solace, comfort, and grace." -Kim Noriega, poet, teacher, and author of Name Me"The poems in Staiger's wonderful collection can be read for the pleasure that good poems reliably provide, but this gathering of verse offers an additional satisfaction, especially for readers who share her Great Plains heritage. Poem after poem provides a sense, both historical and experiential, of what it means to be from that part of the world where the power of the earth and its seasons are always on display." -Larry Watson, poet and author of Montana 1948, Let Him Go, As Good As Gone, and other novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Place Called Alice, My nostalgic memoir of life on the North Dakota Prairie. As one of the very first "baby boomers"I grew up in a little prairie town, that, like a lot of prairie towns, is mostly gone anymore. It was a time before "God" got put into the Pledge of Allegiance, a time when portraits of Washington and Lincoln, and a copy of the Ten Commandments in gothic script had an honored presence on the walls at school, and World War II was still a part of the short term memory. Kids today would more than likely say our lives were boring. Our bicycles only had one speed, baseball bats were made of wood, and you had to check and see that no one else was on the line when you used the telephone that stuck up off the desk like in a 1930's movie. I guess I never realized how unsophisticated we were, we were like a Norman Rockwell painting and to tell the honest truthI miss it.My writing, the telling of the stories of my memories of small town North Dakota in free, and admittedly unsophisticated verse, has been described as nostalgic narrative because for me, it's a journey of no distance from my heart to a Place Called Alice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway 18 between Mission and Okreek, South Dakota, is a stretch of no more than eighteen miles, but late at night or in a blizzard it seems endless. "It feels like being somewhere between South Dakota and 'there,'" says Simon Ortiz, "perhaps at the farthest reaches of the galaxy." Acoma Pueblo poet Ortiz spent a winter in South Dakota, teaching at Sinte Gleska College on the Rosebud Lakota Sioux Reservation. The bitter cold and driving snow of a prairie winter were a reality commanding his attention through its absolute challenge to survival and the meaning of survival. Ortiz's way of dealing with the hard elements of winter was to write After and Before the Lightning, prose and verse poems that were his response to that long season between the thunderstorms of autumn and spring. "I needed a map of where I was and what I was doing in the cosmos," he writes. In these poems, which he regards as a book-length poetic work, he charts the vast spaces of prairie and time that often seem indistinguishable. As he faces the reality of winter on the South Dakota reservation, he also confronts the harsh political reality for its Native community and culture and for Indian people everywhere. "Writing this poetry reconnected me to the wonder and awe of life," Ortiz states emphatically. Readers will feel the reality of that wonder and awe—and the cold of that South Dakota winter—through the gentle ferocity of his words.

Book excerpt: The astonishing, powerful debut by the winner of a 2016 Whiting Writers' Award WHEREAS her birth signaled the responsibility as mother to teach what it is to be Lakota therein the question: What did I know about being Lakota? Signaled panic, blood rush my embarrassment. What did I know of our language but pieces? Would I teach her to be pieces? Until a friend comforted, Don’t worry, you and your daughter will learn together. Today she stood sunlight on her shoulders lean and straight to share a song in Diné, her father’s language. To sing she motions simultaneously with her hands; I watch her be in multiple musics. —from “WHEREAS Statements” WHEREAS confronts the coercive language of the United States government in its responses, treaties, and apologies to Native American peoples and tribes, and reflects that language in its officiousness and duplicity back on its perpetrators. Through a virtuosic array of short lyrics, prose poems, longer narrative sequences, resolutions, and disclaimers, Layli Long Soldier has created a brilliantly innovative text to examine histories, landscapes, her own writing, and her predicament inside national affiliations. “I am,” she writes, “a citizen of the United States and an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, meaning I am a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation—and in this dual citizenship I must work, I must eat, I must art, I must mother, I must friend, I must listen, I must observe, constantly I must live.” This strident, plaintive book introduces a major new voice in contemporary literature.

Book excerpt: In Which Way Was North, Anne Pierson Wiese juxtaposes poems from her years living in New York City with work written after her relocation to South Dakota. By exploring local, historical, and personal sources, she invites readers to see an unmapped territory of the mind informed by these distinct regions of the United States. Suggesting that mundane physical places and daily routines can possess significance beyond the immediate, Which Way Was North offers elements such as wild grapevines and country cemeteries, along with subway preachers and weeds emerging from sidewalk cracks, as vital starting points for reflection. Fundamentally, Wiese’s poems show that our individual powers of observation remain the most life-affirming response to the existential questions posed by our surroundings, regardless of where we happen to call home.
