Book excerpt: Tom Trinity believes baseball is his life. Even if he throws nothing but no hitters, he’s wrong. Tammy, a runaway, becomes more important than any perfect fastball, as are mystical caves where someone, perhaps his father, teaches him to pitch. Tom fears he might become like his grandfather Dr. Winchester, who commits more heinous crimes than Edgar Allan Poe could ever have imagined. Even though he is groomed by wondrous tales of blue dolphins trapped in giant aquariums and a greenhouse to rival any Amazon jungle, others about Dr. Winchester haunt Tom. They force him out of baseball and into a mother’s betrayal. He slides into who he is and where he has come from as he tries to tame his love for Tammy—a switch-hitter he cannot strike out.

Book excerpt: This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ron Gawthorp is a semi-retired author who now lives in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia. A veteran writer of some renown in community newspapers early in his life, he has returned to writing after working in the oilfi elds. His fi rst novel, Richer Than The Rockefellers, refl ected life in the oilfields of Illinois, his native state. Glimpses of Glory is his first published non-fiction work. In it he has tediously reconstructed the forgotten career of a professional baseballer from the roaring twenties through the depression. “Baseball was a lot different when it started than it is today. These men were the pioneers of the sport. I think it important to remember how they lived,” the author says. “They worked hard, played hard and gave the game the grit it needed to survive. I especially hope young readers will take note of the way grew.” Gawthorp says that over the years he has stumbled into a lot of stories he was unable to publish. “Some are book worthy and some are still only short stories, fi ction and nonfiction, but I am still looking to put them on the public plate. I am being much assisted by technological advances in the publishing field. The Good Lord willing and the electric stays on the grid, I’ve got enough to keep me busy.” The author is an avid history buff and loves visiting historic locations, research and learning. He lived 22 years in West Virginia before retiring “just over the mountain” to Millboro, VA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Someone lucky enough to live on Milwaukee’s near north side between 1888 and 1952 could experience the world without ever leaving the neighborhood. Nestled between North Seventh and Eighth Streets and West Chambers and Burleigh, Borchert Field was Milwaukee’s major sports venue for 64 years. In this rickety wooden stadium (originally called Athletic Park), Wisconsin residents had a close-up view of sports history in the making, along with rodeos, thrill shows, and even multiple eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. In Borchert Field, baseball historian Bob Buege introduces the famous and fascinating athletes who dazzled audiences in Milwaukee’s venerable ballpark. All the legendary baseball figures—the Bambino, Satchel Paige, Ty Cobb, Joltin’ Joe, Jackie Robinson, the Say Hey Kid—played there. Olympic heroes Jim Thorpe, Babe Didrikson, and Jesse Owens displayed their amazing talents in Borchert. Knute Rockne’s Fighting Irish competed there, and Curly Lambeau’s Green Bay Packers took the field 10 times. Buege tells stories of other monumental moments at Borchert as well, including a presidential visit, women ballplayers, the arrival of television broadcasting, the 1922 national balloon race, and an appearance by scat-singing bandleader Cab Calloway. Borchert Field is long gone, but every page of this book takes readers back to the sights, sounds, and spectacle of its heyday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Telegraph’s obituaries pages are renowned for their quality of writing and capacity to distil the essence of a life from its most extraordinary moments. A unique mix of heroism, ingenuity, infamy and the bizarre, Thinker, Failure, Soldier, Jailer collects the very best of those obituaries to present an endlessly absorbing compendium of human endeavour. Organised day by day around the calendar year, with each life presented on the date it ended, the book features hundreds of remarkable stories. World statesmen jostle with glamorous celluloid stars, pioneering boffins sit alongside chart-topping rock ’n’ rollers, while artists and their muses mingle with record-breaking sportsmen, Victoria Cross winners, spies, showgirls and captains of industry – as well as the titans of rather more esoteric fields. Here, for instance, can be found Britain’s greatest goat breeder, a hangman who campaigned to abolish the death penalty, a priest to Soho’s pimps, a cross-dressing mountaineer and a minister who preached a gospel of avarice - donations in notes only, please, as ‘change makes me nervous’. A treasure trove of human virtue, vice and trivia, Thinker, Failure, Soldier, Jailer is the perfect gift for the armchair psychologist in all of us.
