Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Sketches Such were the thoughts of the proud beauty as we found her, so intent upon' the future - the glory of the eclat that would follow her debut as Mrs. Lawyer Earnest. Her train of thought, however, did not remain so triumphant very long, for an approaching footstep and a ring at the hall door warned her to prepare, with her many fascinating graces, for a visitor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Southern Scenes The desire to travel is almost universal, - to visit new scenes and meet people differing in appearance and customs from those encountered in every-day life. The present rapid and luxurious system of traveling, contrasted with the slow and comfortless facilities of other days, has developed an irresistible longing to see for one's self the wonders and beauties of other climes. Those who for various reasons are debarred from the indulgence of this luxury of travel, read or listen with avidity to de scriptions of the beautiful, grand or marvelous, whether beheld in foreign lands or on the shores of our own'country. Believing that to many of our friends an account of places visited by us would be of inter est, and serve also as a pleasant remembrancer to those who composed our party of tourists, on their. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rodman the Keeper: Southern Sketches The sketches included in this volume were writ ten during a residence in the South, which has em braced the greater part of the past six years. As far as they go they record real impressions; but they can never give the inward charm of that beau tiful land which the writer has learned to love, and from which she now severs herself with true regret. Two of these sketches have appeared in the At lantic Monthly, four in Appletons'ljournal, and one each in Scribner's Monthly, The Galaxy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dixie: Or Southern Scenes and Sketches The chapters which make up this volume first appeared in harper's magazine and harper's weekly as a series of papers upon the development of what may well be called Our New South and its resources. The descriptions of scenery and present conditions are my own, but the state ments which are of the most value and importance to a student of the material resources of the country are such as were made to me, and then verified by others - by the most shrewd and skilled, and at the same time disinterested, residents of the localities to which they apply. It would have required years of residence and special training for me to gather such information from my own experience. Perhaps the chapter upon St. Louis will not seem to be as wholly in place here as in the companion to this volume, called Our Great ivest. Truly, St. Louis belongs somewhere between the two sections, or more properly in both, for it is a Western city with a Southern and Southwestern trade. It is treated here because it is impossible to correctly con sider the Southern States without a knowledge of its forces and influence, and because these studies, and the main jour ney for making them, were properly begun at that city the gate of the Old way to the region bordering upon the Mississippi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mississippi Scenes: Or Sketches of Southern and Western Life and Adventure, Humorous, Satirical, and Descriptive, Including the Legend of Black Creek A very few words will suffice to preface the following sketches, which are mostly drawn from real scenes and characters, and may, therefore, be regarded by the reader as faithfully original. The models and incidents are alone borrowed and embellished. Hundreds now living will doubtless recognize and identify every character, and thousands are familiar with the scenery and many of the incidents. These facts serve to alleviate, partially, the distrust with which I offer them to the public; though, if I shall have failed to paint sufficiently life-like, my mortification will be, in consequence, much the more intense. The Mississippi reader, however, will took in vain for the originals of all the characters and scenes in our own State or midst; and many friends in Georgia, where the author's early life and youth were passed, will, no doubt, be surprised to find much in the following pages which belongs more properly to pleasant reminiscences of the treasured past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern California: Sketches in Arizona and New Mexico From its nature, the book is in but slight sense a guide to persons visiting Southern California, al though its pages embrace much reliable information about the country and its people. Still, so rapid are the changes which take place on this part of the coast, that what was true of it in 1884, and even last year, may not be true of it to-day. The writer has aimed to build, out of the many sketches and facts given, a pleasant and readable book. That the work is free from errors she dare not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scraps of Song and Southern Scenes In placing before the public this little volume, I feel that I am appealing to an audience whose sympathies are already mine. Yet, if the full measure of my anticipations be not wholly realized, I shall still feel that the world has been so kind and generous to me, that I can well afford to submit uncomplainingly to a light reproof now and then. Should these little emanations of my intellect meet with favor in the eyes of those for whose pleasure they are written, and should they touch a responsive chord in the hearts of those among whom my life has been passed, and to whom every sympathy of my soul goes out in fond endearment; then shall I feel that I have not written in vain of the melody and memory of my old plantation home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Hours in Southern History This is a book of sketches and might be entitled, A Sketch Book of Southern History. It aims to give in brief outline the salient features of Southern heroism and achievement, and to state rapidly the South's side of the long controversy between the sections. The author has tried to be fair, candid, and truthful. Extremists of either section will not like the volume. The fact that he is a Southerner, however, the author will attempt neither to palliate nor to deny; but he has aimed to write "with malice toward none, with charity for all." The facts stated in this volume have been gathered from a thousand sources; none have been manufactured. Of Southern civilization, the author speaks from experience, as he remembers vividly two generations that represented the Old South so-called. The work is a labor of love; its object, justice to all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches and Studies in Southern Europe, Vol. 2 of 2 Sicily, in the centre of the Mediterranean, has been throughout all history the meeting-place and battle-ground of the races that contributed to civilize the West. It was here that the Greeks measured their strength against Ph nicia, and that Carthage fought her first duel with Rome. Here the bravery of Hellenes triumphed over barbarian force in the victories of Gelon and Timoleon. Here, in the harbor of Syracuse, the Athenian Empire succumbed to its own intemperate ambition. Here, in the end, Rome laid her mortmain upon Greek, Ph nician, and Sikeliot alike, turning the island into a granary and reducing its inhabitants to serfdom. When the classic age had closed, when Belisarius had vainly reconquered from the Goths for the empire of the East the fair island of Persephone and Zeus Olympius, then came the Mussulman, filling up with an interval of Oriental luxury and Arabian culture the period of utter deadness between the ancient and the modern world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summer-Land: A Southern Story IT was said by Gray, and has been said by a good many others, that any man, with talent or without, could write a useful and entertaining book, if he would only faithfully, and without affectation, detail what he has seen and heard in a sphere which the rest of the world had never seen, and was curious about. The author thinks that his little volume of J ourneyings may claim to fulfil to some extent those conditions of a good book. With the exception of a change of names, and the coloring of a story, a faithful endeavor has been made to depict a true and honest picture of life and scenery in the South; with sketches of character, customs, etc., among. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ante Bellum: Southern Life as It Was A ssnsaous enemy will forgive us for taking a retrospective view of scenes that in a few years will fade from our memories; and although they may consider these home pictures too highly colored by a prejudiced hand, you, my friends, will recognize the accuracy of the drawing, and cast with me one last, fond, lingering look on our Southern homes as they existed before the red hand of war made them desolate. If the sentiments expressed in these pages should give offense to any, it must be remem bered that they only indicate in a slight degree that feeling which helped to bring about the long and bloody war; and as it was my desire to adhere strictly to facts, I have been compelled to slightly introduce a trite subject. With the hope that these truthful sketches of Southern life may divert for a brief season your thoughts from the dull monotony of the present gloomy state of our country, as they have mine, I cast forth upon the uncertain billows this frail bark freighted with delightful memories of the happy past.
