Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as "the fruit basket of the world," the Southern San Joaquin Valley is a great expanse of land rich in both resources and heritage. From the early Franciscan Friars, fur trappers, and explorers to the late-twentieth-century technological revolution, the area is rich in California history. The Southern San Joaquin Valley encompasses three counties in south central California, stretching from the citrus and cotton fields of Tulare and Kings Counties to the oil-rich land of Bakersfield and Kern County. This book contains nearly two hundred images of people, places, and events in the valley, some taken by noted photographers such as Carleton Watkins and C.A. Nelson, and others captured by everyday folks as family mementos. Ranging from a simple streetscape of early Visalia to photographs of field workers in Kern County, they provide an interesting glimpse of the valley's past, as seen by historians and other recorders of historical events.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Joaquin Valley of the State of California: A Brief Description of the Topography, Climatic Conditions, Industrial Development and Resources of the Region, Illustrated by Photographs of Typical Scenes and Containing Maps HE geography of the San Joaquin Valley is simple, and may be quickly learned. It is an oval-shaped piece of territory, about twice and a half times as long as it is broad, and it extends in a northwest and southeast direction through, the center of the State. Measured from north to south it is f almost exactly in the center of California that is, the distance from the southern boundary of the valley to Lower California just equals the distance from the northern boundary of the valley to the Oregon line; but as the San Joaquin river lies somewhat nearer to the ocean than to the Nevada boundary, the valley is not exactly in the center of the State, on an east and west measuring. The northern end of the valley - which is the lower end, if we reckon by drainage - consists of seven counties lying side by side along a division line that marks the center of the whole district. These are: San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced to the west and Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mariposa to the east. Next on the south comes the huge county of Fresno, which runs clear across the valley, from the Coast Range to the Sierras, out of which a piece has been cut on the northeast to make the county of Madera. Below Fresno lie the two coun ties of Kings and Tulare, side by side. The great county of Kern extends clear across the southern end of the valley. Book excerpt: This comprehensive history of the San Joaquin Valley begins with a study of the indigenous Native American tribes of the area and their interactions with one another. It then explores the occupation by the Spanish, the trapping industry, the arrival of settlers from the eastern United States, and the formation of expansive cattle ranches. The development of agriculture and irrigation and the subsequent battles over land and water rights are addressed. Also discussed is the grand era of the railroad, which would forever change the valley, bringing light industry and modern agricultural practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world population grows, so does the demand for food, putting unprecedented pressure on agricultural lands. In many desert dryland regions, however, intensive cultivation is causing their productivity to decline precipitously. "Rewilding" the least productive of these landscapes offers a sensible way to reverse the damage, recover natural diversity, and ensure long-term sustainability of remaining farms and the communities they support. This accessibly written, groundbreaking contributed volume is the first to examine in detail what it would take to retire eligible farmland and restore functioning natural ecosystems. The lessons in Rewilding Agricultural Landscapes will be useful to conservation leaders, policymakers, groundwater agencies, and water managers looking for inspiration and practical advice for solving the complicated issues of agricultural sustainability and water management.
