Book Synopsis Fjord Oceanography by : Howard Freeland
Download or read book Fjord Oceanography written by Howard Freeland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fjords are deep, glacia11y carved estuaries that are pecu1iar to certain coast1ines, and have severa1 characteristics that dist inguish them from sha110wer embayments. At higher latitudes they indent the western coast1ines of Scandinavia, North and South America, and New Zea1and. They are a1so a common feature of much of the arctic coast1ine. The papers contained in this vo1ume were presented at a workshop funded by the NATO Advanced Studies Institute in Victoria, British Co1umbia. It may seem curious to the reader that this specia1 c1ass of estuaries shou1d have attracted an international gathering of oceanographers from severa1 different discip1ines. The reas on for this interest stems from both practica1 and scientific considerations. On the one hand, fjords are a feature common to the coast1ines of severa1 countries that depend heavi1y on the oceans for communication, fisheries and other resources. The impact of man's activities on these coasts has created a demand for new know1edge of the physica1, bio10gica1 and chemica1 aspects of fjords. Sometimes man's inf1uence on the ocean is intentiona1 as, for examp1e, in the artificia1 contro1 of ice cover; often it is the more insidious bui1d-up of toxic wastes that is of concern. These prob1ems are particu1ar1y acute where the conf1icting demands of fisheries, industria1 deve10pment and re creation meet in a sing1e fjord; and indeed, this is a common occurence a10ng severa1 of the fjords in Scandinavia and Canada.
Book Synopsis Forest Hydrology by : Devendra Amatya
Download or read book Forest Hydrology written by Devendra Amatya and published by CABI. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes.

Book Synopsis The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names by : Andrew Scott
Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names written by Andrew Scott and published by Harbour Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2010 Roderick Haig-Brown Regional BC Book Prize Winner of the 2009 Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Historical Writing In 1909 Captain John T. Walbran published one of the most beloved and enduring of all BC books, British Columbia Coast Names. Harbour Publishing celebrates the hundredth anniversary of that landmark work by presenting the first book to update Walbran's classic, Andrew Scott's Raincoast Place Names. Like its progenitor, Raincoast Place Names is much more than simply a catalogue of name origins because it tells the often fascinating stories behind the names and in so doing serves as a history of the region in capsule form. It is also a monumental work, twice the size of Walbran's and including more than three times as many places. Four thousand entries consider, in intriguing detail, the stories behind over five thousand place names: how they were discovered, who named them and why, and what the names reveal. It describes the original First Nations cultures, the heroics of the 18th-century explorers and fur traders, the gruelling survey and settlement efforts of the 19th century, the lives of colonial officials, missionaries, gold seekers and homesteaders, and the histories of nearly every important vessel to sail or cruise the coast. The book also examines--for the first time--the rich heritage of BC place names added in the 20th century. These new entries reflect the world of the steamship era, the ships and skippers of the Union and Princess lines, the heroes of the two World Wars and the sealing fleet, Esquimalt's naval base and BC's fishing, canning, mining and logging industries. Richly illustrated with photos and maps, this book is an essential reference work, a must-have guide for boaters and mariners and a standard companion for anyone interested in BC history. It also makes a fine shelf-mate for the Encyclopedia of British Columbia.

Book Synopsis Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina by : John Belton O'Neall Landrum
Download or read book Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina written by John Belton O'Neall Landrum and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1897 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with local stories and dramatic scenes of fighting from across many decades, J. B. O. Landrum's chronicle of South Carolina is a treasure of the past. The author is enthusiastic in presenting accounts which encapsulate the local Carolina spirit; tales of hardship amid an unforgiving wilderness, of brutal combat between the Native Americans and the white settlers, and of everyday living in the villages and townships of the various counties. War stories and dramatic events are commonly taken from recollections of descendants and written anecdotes; such sources make for a lively and thoroughly engaging history of how South Carolina came to be. By the time he wrote this history in 1897, J. B. O. Landrum was already respected as a writer and chronicler of the past. Locals in and around the Carolinas would, from time to time, send him pertinent material. This edition includes the original publication's maps of the locality, so that readers can understand where settlements stood in the grand scheme of things, and how troops moved around during the conflicts. For its unique storytelling and knowledge, this history retains much value for modern day readers.
Book Synopsis Skarns in British Columbia by : Gerald E. Ray
Download or read book Skarns in British Columbia written by Gerald E. Ray and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skarns in British Columbia have historically been important sources of iron, tungsten, copper, and gold. This publication begins with an introduction on skarn terminology and the problems of skarn identification. It then reviews a genetic model of skarn formation and presents descriptive profiles of eight types of skarn deposits; describes the database of at least 735 skarn occurrences in the province, and the number and distribution of skarns in British Columbia according to their associations, class, age, and distribution; and notes the ages of British Columbia skarns and the total production of various metals extracted from British Columbia skarns. Subsequent sections provide information on assays and metal ratios of mineralized skarns, skarn mineralogy, skarn mineral chemistry, chemistry of skarn-related intrusions, and the mapping and evaluation of skarns. The appendix contains a listing of 735 skarn occurrences in British Columbia, giving deposit name, MINFILE number, latitude/longitude, elements and minerals present, and associated rocks and their ages.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera by : M. Dan Georgescu
Download or read book Handbook of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera written by M. Dan Georgescu and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing the evolutionary history and classification in the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous age also led to the proliferation of taxa names and an unprecedented expansion in terminology. This new data is spread out over several tens of articles published in international journals and books. Handbook of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera (Practical Classification, Biostratigraphy) brings a variety of this data into the practical field in a ready-to-use form. The species and genera of all the Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal groups are described and illustrated, and additional readings are recommended. Each species is dedicated to one of the 237 plates illustrated with high-quality scanning, electron microscope photographs. The large-sized illustrations are designed to allow the reader to connect quickly with the gross test architecture data with those pertaining to the wall ultrastructure, ornamentation, porosity and high detail morphological features of the test. Fossil material was collected from a variety of localities worldwide, but most of them are from sites in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. With higher than 95% of estimated coverage, the handbook is designed as a useful identification tool for a variety of professionals interested in using the Late Cretaceous planktic foraminifera. Revised stratigraphical ranges for all the 237 species are given in a chart calibrated on the classical Cretaceous Stage/Age scale in which the species are ordered by genus.
