Book excerpt: Excerpt from South of Suez When we had eaten, and the long, cool beer had somewhat soothed us, we turned in our chairs and watched the few dancers with cynical attention. The music was good, the dancing was pleasant to watch, and the place was respectable. But its name was Germania Hall; and we had both just failed to have our services accepted in Belgium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels East of Suez Port Said, the despised, the refuse heap for all the nations Of the East, is nevertheless a name to conjure with, as it is the gate of the East - the East with all its mysteries, its glamour, its history, its wonders. The first glimpse Of Eastern dress is delightful: such a complete change from the last place ashore - Marseilles. Here the Arabs are in their long garments down to their feet, and their red fez on their heads. At first one believes they are women, till one remembers they would be veiled. Crowds Of little boats come round to take you ashore, the rowers black as ink perhaps, coming up from Somaliland, or brown in tint from the desert. The unceasing shrill chatterings Of all Of them make a strange sound to one's ears; it is quite musical - ever rising and falling like a number Of birds in a state of jubilation. One cannot help a thrill Of excitement as one sees all the gaily-coloured crowds about. It is vastly amusing to walk up the chief street from the landing place. All the shopkeepers are at their doors inviting you in to see all their treasures - ibis place the best for feathers, this for the finest embroideries in the world, this for the best cigarettes, etc. In one shop we were looking at parasols, when the polite Armenian implored our friend who was escorting us to look at some pyjamas. This rather embar rassed him in the presence Of ladies, and he made a discreet bolt for the door, not knowing what might be Offered to him next! What a lively scene it is to watch, under the shady trees which line the street, groups sitting on the footpath outside the chief hotel, surrounded by hawkers Of beads, necklaces, ornaments, feathers - almost everything; fortune-tellers squat ting Ou the ground, gravely reading the hands of grey-haired men who would scorn to be seen doing such a thing in Europe! Conjurors have a little group round them, showing their prowess in making one chicken into two; Gully, gully, gully, says he, and lo! The poor little wretched yellow chick is presumably torn in two, and behold a pair The sherbet-seller in his shining panoply of brass jugs, trays, glasses and big can, tinkling the brass together to attract attention; the little street Arabs (literallv so here) playing about, bumping in one's way, and scuttling off when you come out with a strong Imshi. A word or two Of suitable strength in their own tongue has a wonderful effect on natives in most parts. They give you credit for a large vocabulary, and treat you with more respect; and, what is better, keep their distance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of the South IT was during my stay at Biskra, the little desert town of Southern Algeria, that I made the acquaint ance of Athman. A fellow traveller, with whom I had exchanged experiences, was loud in his praise, having, as he informed me, employed him as guide in many expeditions into the interior. The more I heard of Athman the more desirous I became to see him, for it appeared that he was at once an Arab and a negro, a poet and a musician, a dandy and an unsophisticated child of nature. Nor was curiosity alone responsible, for, having a mind to cross the Algerian Sahara, I had been for some time on the outlook for a guide, who would not only discharge his duty in that capacity, but would also supply me with companionable interest. I congratulated myself heartily. Here, it seemed to me, was the very man of whom I had been in search. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Son of the Sahara A beach of white sand, the whisper of palms answering the murmuring moonlit sea, the fragrance of orange blossoms, the perfume of roses and syringa, - that is Grand Canary, a bit of Heaven dropped into the Atlantic; overlooked by writers and painters in general. Surely one can be pardoned a bit of praise and promise for this story, laid, as it is in part, in that magic island. The Canaries properly belong to the African continent. That is best proven by their original inhabitants who were of pure Berber stock. The islands are the stepping stone between Europe and the Sahara. Mysterious Arabs and a continual stream of those silent men who come and go from the great desert tarry there for a while, giving color and romance to the big hotels. The petty gossip, the real news of the Sahara "breaks" there. - Weird, passionate tales; believable or not, they carry an undercurrent of reality that thrills. From such a source came this story. Unaltered in fact, it is given to you, the life story of a man and a woman who turned their backs on worldly conventions that they might find happiness. If it is frank, forgive it. Life near the Equator is not a milk and water affair. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Crescent It was with no small amount of trepidation that I placed my modest card upon the silver salver and watched the neat little maid carry it through mysterious velvety curtains to a region beyond, from where presently there came a welcoming laugh, and a merry, "Do come in." Would she be changed? Would the title have robbed my friend of her simplicity? Would the power of her money have altered her perspective? And would the bitterness of her Oriental life have subtracted from the sweetness of her personality? I hoped and prayed not. But meeting old friends is a risky business at best, especially if the friend in question has, by a marvelous trick of fate, become, over night as it were, an Egyptian Princess. That morning a city paper carried a double column cut of Princess Hassan seated upon an ornate chair, which the reporter had glibly called "the throne of Cleopatra." At the hotel desk I had asked timidly for "The Princess," and received the information that "Her Highness" would see me. The pomp and formality struck terror to my democratic heart. (we always used a driftwood fire by night, since the main hall of the cave was never warm.) I saw his blue eyes glitter under their heavily carved brow arches. Boy though he was, he had a masculine face, in nothing at all like the small, pointed countenance, with the dark eyes and delicate forehead, that met me every morning in my glass. Certainly Mark was fond of the boy's mother, said the old, old man in the corner of the cave. She spent his fortune and more. But we won't discuss her before the boy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath: A Tale of North and South Cornelia Manners felt both the sweetness and hard ness of nature as she lingered in her dooryard, waiting for the morning mail. She was praying, although her blue eyes, shining and tense, were staring down the street. Her hopes, her fears, her love, were embodied in a petition individual, particular, supreme; for her husband was in the army of the Potomac, and her son at Bermuda Hundred with General Butler. The mail was due at eight, and it was already nine o'clock. Mrs. Manners stepped out on the sidewalk, shading her eyes with her long, delicate hand. The trees met overhead as far as a distant bend in the street; and the half-grown, translucent leaves cast a greenish-golden, shadowy brilliance between the arch above and the red dish loam underneath. A boy whom she had sent for the mail came running with a telegram. She watched him approach with a sigh of apprehension, and, when he handed her the yellow envelope, turned aside with the ever-present fear of a terrible catastrophe. A hot, choking sensation made her try to ease the narrow col lar pressing against her throat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. You could not have guessed it from anything the eye could see. In front of the Residency two soldiers march ed up and down sleepily, mechanically, between two ten - pounders - marking the limit of their patrol; and an orderly stood at an open door, lazily shifting his eyes from the sentinels to the black guns, Which gave out soft, quivering waves of heat, as a Wheel, spinning, throws off delicate spray. A hundred yards away the sea spread out, languid and huge. It Was under-tinged With all the colors of a morning sunrise over Mount Bobar, not far beyond, lifting up its somnolent and massive head into the eastern sky. League long rollers came in as steady as columns of infantry, With White streamers flying along the line, and, hovering a moment, split, and ran on the shore in a crumbling foam, like myriads of White mice hurrying up the sand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rabenort's Geography Europe, Vol. 1 The Eastern Hemisphere contains most of the land upon the globe. As in the Western Hemisphere, the land is nearer to the North Pole than to the South Pole. The northern land mass, or grand division, is Eurasia. Southeast of it lies the island or continent of Australia, the smallest of the grand divisions. To the southwest is Africa, joined to Eurasia by the Isthmus of Suez. The Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, is an artificial waterway separating the two grand divisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hours With the Bible: Or, the Scriptures in the Light of Modern Discovery and Knowledge, From Moses to Judges According to Ebers, ' the limits of this tract stretched southwards in a narrow tongue, almost to the present Cairo. On the west side of the Tanitic branch of the Nile, which formed, in fact, its western boundary to the sea. On the south, on the other hand, it bent north-eastwardly from Cairo to the line of the present Suez Canal, which, however, it presently crossed, reaching the Mediterranean at Pelu sium, where the ancient fortified wall from Suez abutted on the shore. But any exact knowledge of the boundaries is perhaps, as yet, impossible, if we may judge from the con troversy respecting them.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Sea Bubbles "Have you never had a bad bilious fever?" says Tom Cringle; "then you have never known what it is to be in heaven or in the other place." I have had a bad fever, and can testify to the truth of the remark. Physical, and, worse still, mental agonies of indescribable horror, followed by visions of perfect peace, happiness, and beauty. There are certain places and scenes that are always blended in my mind with those glorious, strange, delirious dreams, filling me with a luxurious feeling of poetry and pleasure; yet utterly indescribable, because half their charm lies in the remembrance of the happiness they brought me. And so it is that, urged by my fellow-laborer in this work, I sit down with a certain reluctance to write what I fear will be but a commonplace and colorless description of a place and time that will live forever in my thoughts as some splendid dream of beauty and pleasure.
