Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway 18 between Mission and Okreek, South Dakota, is a stretch of no more than eighteen miles, but late at night or in a blizzard it seems endless. "It feels like being somewhere between South Dakota and 'there,'" says Simon Ortiz, "perhaps at the farthest reaches of the galaxy." Acoma Pueblo poet Ortiz spent a winter in South Dakota, teaching at Sinte Gleska College on the Rosebud Lakota Sioux Reservation. The bitter cold and driving snow of a prairie winter were a reality commanding his attention through its absolute challenge to survival and the meaning of survival. Ortiz's way of dealing with the hard elements of winter was to write After and Before the Lightning, prose and verse poems that were his response to that long season between the thunderstorms of autumn and spring. "I needed a map of where I was and what I was doing in the cosmos," he writes. In these poems, which he regards as a book-length poetic work, he charts the vast spaces of prairie and time that often seem indistinguishable. As he faces the reality of winter on the South Dakota reservation, he also confronts the harsh political reality for its Native community and culture and for Indian people everywhere. "Writing this poetry reconnected me to the wonder and awe of life," Ortiz states emphatically. Readers will feel the reality of that wonder and awe—and the cold of that South Dakota winter—through the gentle ferocity of his words.

Book excerpt: In 1937, Badger Clark was judged the best poet in South Dakota and was named Poet Laureate of the state even though he spent most of his time in Arizona recuperating from tuberculosis. An article in the "Smithsonian Magazine," by Carson Vaughn, dated October 2020, is a sympathetic, if less than flattering review of the work of Badger Clark, but many of his poems were popular with western afficionados and singers. There I was sitting in Mrs. Lang's sixth grade class in Bonesteel in 1954, perusing a book of poetry that had the picture of Badger Clark, a cowboy poet balladeer who had written at least one of the poems in the text. I remember having to memorize a poem and recite it for the class, so I chose the "Village Blacksmith" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The image though of Badger Clark as a poet originally from South Dakota stuck in my mind all these years. Like him, I have been gone from South Dakota for decades, yet I still feel the affinity with the farms and prairie, Badlands and Black Hills that were important in my youth. I was, after all, born in Winner and spent my grade school years on a farm eight miles outside of Bonesteel. I trust you will count me a native. In "South Dakota Classic Poems: From Prairie Country Homes," I have placed one hundred (100) of my poems with South Dakota memories and relevancy using classical rhyme and rhythm. The range of subjects includes poems for kids, poems for the historian, and poems of nostalgia from living on a farm during the 1940's and 1950's. I suppose that makes them a bit of history also. This is a collection of South Dakota poems. About 30% come from my previous poetry book, "American Country Poetry." The rest I found scattered over my more than 50 self-published books of poetry. I have written another book about my pioneering grandfather and school teacher on my mother's side, Roy Backus, whose family homesteaded in Geddes and who later homesteaded near Smithwick. On my father's side, his parents homesteaded near Bonesteel and his mother was from the Johnson/Qualm family line that settled land near Platte.I have great hopes that many from South Dakota will enjoy this volume of "their" poetry celebrating their past.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prairie Poets: An Anthology of Verse of the South Dakota State Poetry Society, 1927-1949; Dedicated to Its Founder and First President and Editor of Pasque Petals, 1926-1937, James C. Lindberg, and to Bessie L. Lindberg, Publisher, 1939-1948 In October, 1927, so much interest was felt in the creative writing venture that The South Dakota State Poetry Society was organized, with pasque petals as its organ. Today its influence is national, for once a South Dakotan always a South Dakotan brings contributors from many states. In 1928, Prof. Lindberg published its first anthology; in 1930, he brought out Fifteen South Dakota Poets. In 193 5, he and Mrs. Ger trude Gunderson published another general anthology, again with some over 100'contributors and zoo poems. In his last message to The South Dakota State Poetry Society, Prof. Lindberg set the twentieth year, 1947, as time for another anthology. Conditions following the war have been delaying factors, but his wish now finds fulfilment in prairie poets.
