Book excerpt: The book presents results of recent projects in oceanography and marine geosciences (e.g. WOCE, JGOFS, PAGES, ODP) regarding present and past circulation in the South Atlantic. The objective of the book is to integrate results from both oceanographic and geological studies. As the connecting link between the Antarctic and the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic plays a crucial role with regard to the heat budget of the North Atlantic and to the biogeochemical budget of the global ocean. New results from studies of meridional water mass and heat transports are presented. The central theme of geological investigations is the reconstruction of current and productivity systems in the South Atlantic during the late Quaternary.

Book excerpt: This book describes in detail two kinds of models that simulate the dispersion of radionuclides in the sea. Biases have a strong impact on the predictable skill and the structures of the model predicted patterns in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. These biases and the related effects are presented as well as the atmospheric teleconnections between the tropical Atlantic and the African continent. Special focus is given to recent developments in the nitrogen cycle in the open ocean and the new challenges that have arisen from these advancements. This book also provides a review of the history, geography, and climate of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the role they play in natural disasters. A review of the tsunami hazard along the coastal area of the Gulf of Bengal is explored and the seismicity of the Indian Ocean area. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and its affects, such as monsoon strength over the Indian subcontinent, climatic extremes and socio-economic hardship throughout the tropical Indian Ocean region are presented. This book considers a selection of statistical time series models to analyze and predict the IOD. Finally, using a data-assimilative model of the North Indian assimilating altimetry, the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the meridional heat fluxes in the Indian Ocean are explored.

Book excerpt: The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceans with a total area of about 106,460,000 square kilometers (41,100,000 square miles). It covers approximately 20 percent of the Earth's surface and about 29 percent of its water surface area. It separates the "Old World" from the "New World".The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Eurasia and Africa to the east, and the Americas to the west. As one component of the interconnected global ocean, it is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south (other definitions describe the Atlantic as extending southward to Antarctica). The Equatorial Counter Current subdivides it into the North Atlantic Ocean and the South Atlantic Ocean at about 8°N. Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492 under Spanish flag. Six years later Vasco da Gama reached India under Portuguese flag, by navigating south around the Cape of Good Hope, thus proving that the Atlantic and Indian Oceans are connected. In 1500, in his voyage to India following Vasco da Gama, Pedro Alvares Cabral reached Brazil, taken by the currents of the South Atlantic Gyre. Following these explorations, Spain and Portugal quickly conquered and colonized large territories in the New World and forced the Native American population into slavery in order to explore the vast quantities of silver and gold they found. Spain and Portugal monopolized this trade in order to keep other European nations out, but conflicting interests nevertheless led to a series of Spanish-Portuguese wars. A peace treaty mediated by the Pope divided the conquered territories into Spanish and Portuguese sectors while keeping other colonial powers away. England, France, and the Dutch Republic enviously watched the Spanish and Portuguese wealth grow and allied themselves with pirates such as Henry Mainwaring and Alexandre Exquemelin. They could explore the convoys leaving America because prevailing winds and currents made the transport of heavy metals slow and predictable
