Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of South Africa The new rulers of the Cape soon found themselves at loggerheads with the colonists - not only with the old-established Dutch burghers, who naturally had no sym pathy with the regime, but also with the British settlers who were now streaming into the country. The Albany settlers of 1820, who had been accustomed in England and Scotland to relatively democratic institutions, were in no mood to submit to the dictates of autocratic governors; and, after an heroic struggle to establish themselves in the new land, many of them played an important part in a prolonged agitation for freedom of the Press and representative institutions - demands which the government was forced to concede, inch by inch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Africa of to-Day Transvaal, the rise of the Chartered Company, and the Matabele campaign. But on all essential points in the political situation, and even the geography, I was as ignorant as South Africans would be of the Indian frontier. I had only this advantage, that for the last ten years almost my sole occupation in life had been travelling in little known countries and reporting what I saw and heard there. SO as soon as I had put the last remaining touches on my book of travels then about to be published, I eagerly read up the works on South African history and travel which I had brought on board for the purpose of forming in my mind a groundwork on which to build. On my arrival in Cape Town, in the beginning of December, I found the Situation in the Transvaal was fast reaching a crisis. Mr. Lionel Phillips, the President of the Chamber of Mines at Johannes burg, had but recently made a speech in which he detailed the disabilities under which the huge gold mining industry laboured, and hinted in strong terms that, were concessions of some sort not granted by the Boer Government, the Uitlanders (or foreign residents) might be compelled to resort to force to gain their ends and everywhere people were saying that trouble was pending. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The increasing luxury and the rise in the price of the necessities of life drove our public men to seek sources of revenue which their forefathers would have scorned. The sale of public offices, of seats in Parliament, and of influence, had created a system of jobbery so gigantic that it is to-day almost impossible to appreciate its far-reaching effects. The Paymaster of the Forces thought it no disgrace to use hundreds of thousands of pounds Of the public money for private ends; Ministers did not Shrink from Open bribery, from receiving fees and percentages, and from sharing the profit on contracts of every kind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers in South Africa I have been asked to write a series of works which should deal with real adventures, in parts of the world either wild and uncontrolled by any civilized government, or at any rate regions full of dangers, of wonderful discoveries; in which the daring and heroism of white men (and sometimes of white women) stood out clearly against backgrounds of unfamiliar landscapes, peopled with strange nations, savage tribes, dangerous beasts, or wonderful birds. These books would again and again illustrate the first coming of the white race into regions inhabited by people of a different type, with brown, black, or yellow skins; how the European was received, and how he treated these races of the soil which gradu ally came under his rule owing to his superior knowledge, weapons, wealth, or powers of per suasion. The books were to tell the plain truth, even if here and there they showed the white man to have behaved badly, or if they revealed the fact that the American Indian, the Negro, the Malay, the black Australian was sometimes cruel and treacherous.
