Book excerpt: The purpose of this technical report is to provide current documentation of the Sensor Intercomparison and Merger for Biological and Interdisciplinary Oceanic Studies (SIMBIOS) Project activities, NASA Research Announcement (NRA) research status, satellite data processing, data product validation, and field calibration. This documentation is necessary to ensure that critical information is related to the scientific community and NASA management. This critical information includes the technical difficulties and challenges of validating and combining ocean color data from an array of independent satellite systems to form consistent and accurate global bio-optical time series products. This technical report is not meant as a substitute for scientific literature. Instead, it will provide a ready and responsive vehicle for the multitude of technical reports issued by an operational project. This particular document focus on the variability in chlorophyll pigment measurements resulting from differences in methodologies and laboratories conducting the pigment analysis.VanHeukelem, Laurie and Thomas, Crystal S. and Gilbert, Patricia M. and Fargion, Giulietta S. Book Synopsis Phytoplankton Pigments by : Suzanne Roy
Download or read book Phytoplankton Pigments written by Suzanne Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 891 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pigments act as tracers to elucidate the fate of phytoplankton in the world's oceans and are often associated with important biogeochemical cycles related to carbon dynamics in the oceans. They are increasingly used in in situ and remote-sensing applications, detecting algal biomass and major taxa through changes in water colour. This book is a follow-up to the 1997 volume Phytoplankton Pigments in Oceanography (UNESCO Press). Since then, there have been many advances concerning phytoplankton pigments. This book includes recent discoveries on several new algal classes particularly for the picoplankton, and on new pigments. It also includes many advances in methodologies, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and developments and updates on the mathematical methods used to exploit pigment information and extract the composition of phytoplankton communities. The book is invaluable primarily as a reference for students, researchers and professionals in aquatic science, biogeochemistry and remote sensing.

Download or read book Science and Applications of Coastal Remote Sensing written by Kevin Ross Turpie and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN MEMORIAL: This Research Topic is dedicated to our co-editor Dr. Tiffany Moisan, a well-regarded ocean color remote sensing scientist, who unexpectedly passed away during its preparation. Dr. Moisan was a dear friend, and upbeat and enthusiastic colleague and a scientist committed to the use of remote sensing to improve our understanding of marine microbiology and phytoplankton ecology. She was a strong supporter of the development of remote sensing capabilities and applications for coastal and inland waters, and we know that she would have wanted this Research Topic to provide her colleagues an opportunity to share and promote their work in this area. A voice in our community is now quiet. Let the chorus of our shared song continue with her memory. Dr. Tiffany Moisan is survived by her loving family, including her husband, Dr. John Moisan and her two daughters.

This book was released on 2007-03-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides extensive insight on remote sensing of coastal waters from aircraft and space-based platforms. The primary focus of the book is optical remote sensing using passive instruments, to measure and analyze the coastal aquatic environment. The authors have gathered information from a variety of sources, to help non-specialists grasp new techniques and technology, to quickly produce useful data
Book Synopsis Intercomparison Measurements by : William C. Ballowe
Download or read book Intercomparison Measurements written by William C. Ballowe and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiments described are a comparison of rod bump-period, rod oscillator, rod drop, and pulsed neutron methods normally used for measuring control element strength in a multiplying system. The results show the rod oscillator technique to be dependent on detector locations. It is concluded that small reactivity changes are best measured by the rod bump-period technique while for large reactivities the pulsed neutron method is the only method of the four which has a straight forward interpretation.

Book Synopsis Aquatic Photosynthesis by : Paul G. Falkowski
Download or read book Aquatic Photosynthesis written by Paul G. Falkowski and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic Photosynthesis is a comprehensive guide to understanding the evolution and ecology of photosynthesis in aquatic environments. This second edition, thoroughly revised to bring it up to date, describes how one of the most fundamental metabolic processes evolved and transformed the surface chemistry of the Earth. The book focuses on recent biochemical and biophysical advances and the molecular biological techniques that have made them possible. In ten chapters that are self-contained but that build upon information presented earlier, the book starts with a reductionist, biophysical description of the photosynthetic reactions. It then moves through biochemical and molecular biological patterns in aquatic photoautotrophs, physiological and ecological principles, and global biogeochemical cycles. The book considers applications to ecology, and refers to historical developments. It can be used as a primary text in a lecture course, or as a supplemental text in a survey course such as biological oceanography, limnology, or biogeochemistry.
