This rift basin is generally regarded as the best natural geological laboratory in the world in which to study the processes of rift formation. Uplift of the rift margins in an arid climate results in extensive three-dimensional exposures of pre- and syn-rift strata and associated structures. These serve as analogues for the understanding and hydrocarbon exploration of deeper buried rift-systems on continental margins such as the North Sea and the Atlantic margins. The Red Sea - Gulf of Aden rift is also exceptional in that its stratigraphy spans all stages from pre-rift environments, syn-rift continental to marine environments through the rift to drift transition to post-rift sea-floor spreading. The work is arranged in eight sections: following a review of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of rift basins, the magmatism and structural evolution of the Red Sea - Gulf of Aden rift is reviewed. Subsequently, new case studies are presented of the early rifting environment, syn-rift sedimentation, tectonics and diagenesis, evaporites and salt tectonics. Post-rift sediments of the axial trough are then discussed along with studies of reefs, coastal zone and shelf sediments, and the tectonic geomorphology of the rift margin escarpment. This work results from extensive new research in the rift basin largely carried out under collaborative research projects by European and Middle Eastern geologists. It will be an invaluable reference work for geoscientists in the hydrocarbon, groundwater and mineral extraction industries, as well as for researchers in university departments of earth sciences, mining and physical geography.

Book excerpt: This dissertation assesses how geologic signals are preserved, or perturbed, in the sedimentary source-to-sink pathway, and to what extent these signals are reliable narrators of Earth's history. We investigate the resilience of geologic signal propagation through an examination of the two fundamental processes of sedimentary geology: erosion and deposition. First, we evaluate how the erosive forms of sedimentary pathways encode information about the mechanistic processes responsible for their creation (Chapters I and II). Second, we examine the depositional records at the terminus of these pathways to determine how well sediment transport histories are preserved in the stratigraphic record (Chapters III and IV). Chapter I presents a quantitative comparison of subaerial and submarine channel networks to determine whether their morphologies are distinct. A global analysis of channel concavity and steepness indices from both terrestrial and submarine catchments demonstrates that these two channel forms are indeed unique from each other. Specifically, statistical comparisons demonstrate that concavities of submarine channels are, on balance, lower than those measured in terrestrial basins, and that submarine tributaries are steeper than their associated mainstem. These differences may reflect distinct drainage formation mechanisms and dynamics of submarine sediment gravity flows as compared to overland flow processes. Chapter II uses a set of numerical experiments based on geomorphic transport laws of channel incision and hillslope diffusion to determine whether an established power-law relationship between channel slope and drainage basin area can be optimally configured across a landscape. We find that even in numerical landscape evolution models where parameters are explicitly defined, a certain level of numerical dispersion persists. We speculate this model variance in slope-area scaling highlights a fundamental instability in the form of channel networks, which is only reconciled by diffusively eroded hillslopes that allow variability in the channel length scaling such that mathematical representation of channel incision can be reconciled with a landscape topology that is continuous in space. Chapter III, through a case study from the Upper Cretaceous La Anita Formation (Southern Patagonia), demonstrates how depositional style can affect detrital zircon provenance signatures, which could be mistakenly interpreted as tectonically significant. We establish the sedimentary context of the La Anita Formation as a shoaling package of continental margin facies and then combine our analysis with systematic detrital zircon sampling from each depositional environment. These data document a systematic shift in provenance trends, which correlates with varying depositional environments. This suggests that competition between transport processes inherent to different depositional environments affects the provenance signature recorded within a single stratigraphic succession. Chapter IV capitalizes on an exposure of thin-bedded turbidites adjacent to a prominent submarine channel meander bend offshore Morro Bay, California to assess how sediment is mobilized across the continental margin, and how allogenic forcings can change sedimentation styles. An analysis of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry, sediment core descriptions, radiocarbon dating, and stable isotope measurements suggests that margin-wide sediment mobilization via sediment gravity flows and slope failures were much more frequent at the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary than under present conditions. This work suggests that sea-level likely plays a significant role in the coarse-grained sediment flux onto the Morro Bay continental slope while also providing a first-hand assessment of the geohazard potential of turbidity currents in this region.

Book excerpt: Internal and external architecture of a series of coarse-grained, deepwater deposits have been investigated and the role of intra- and extra-basinal tectonic forces on the sedimentary record has been highlighted within a source-to-sink context. Six hundred (600) meters of coarse-grained sediment gravity flow deposits of a submarine fan were measured in the Jurassic Los Molles Formation in the southern Neuquén Basin, Argentina. This fan is encased in a thick (km scale), fine-grained, hydrocarbon source-prone unit and is characterized by well-sorted, thick-bedded turbidite deposits in the axial and proximal parts of the fan, which transitions to more poorly-sorted and heterolithic facies on the fan margin and downdip fringe. Measured thinning rates of ~7m/km suggest a fan that is ~15km long, smaller than other systems with similar slope dimensions. Bed thicknesses are consistent across the fan but much larger numbers exist in the axial locations, suggesting stratigraphic truncation and fan confinement, probably the result of a structured basin floor inherited from syn-tectonic processes. At the regional or basin scale, a combination of 3D seismic data, well log and core data were used to describe a relatively undocumented deepwater sedimentary system in the offshore Veracruz Basin, Mexico. Sandstone-prone Miocene channelized fairways are present in the basin, downdip from an active plate boundary zone and active foldbelts. Deposits are poorly-sorted and exhibit similar spatially-controlled facies associations as the Los Molles Formation, however the depositional system is much more extensive, facilitated by regional tectonic forces and uplift in the hinterland resulting in extremely high sedimentation rates to the basin. A large channel complex, initiated by tectonic uplift on the margin and an eastward migration of the depocenter, which parallel’s the migration of the deformation front in the hinterland, provide additional influence of tectonic forces on the resultant deepwater sedimentary systems.
