Book excerpt: Maraging steels are high-strength steels combined with good toughness. They are used particularly in aerospace and tooling applications. Maraging refers to the ageing of martensite, a hard microstructure commonly found in steels.Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications covers the following topics: Introduction to maraging steels; Microstructure of maraging steels; Mechanical properties of maraging steels; Thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging systems and precipitation hardening steels; Quantification of phase transformation kinetics in maraging steels; Quantification of age hardening in maraging steels; Maraging steels and overageing; Precipitation hardening stainless steel; Applications of artificial neural network on modelling maraging steel properties. With its distinguished authors, Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications is a standard reference for industry and researchers concerned with maraging steels and modelling as well as users of maraging steels in the aerospace and tooling sectors. The book includes both conventional maraging steels and precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steels. Provides an overview of maraging steels including microstructure and mechanical properties Reviews thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging steels Includes chapters on the quantification of phase transformation kinetics and age hardening in maraging steels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the combination of tensile properties and toughness that can be obtained with the maraging steels is higher than can be achieved with other steels by simple heat treatments, there is considerable interest in using the maraging steels for critical components such as rocket motor cases, pressure vessels, and aircraft forgings. This report includes information on the tensile, compressive, shear, bearing, dynamic modulus, impact, bend, fatigue, creep, and rupture properties of the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels and on the effect of temperature on these properties. Data for the properties of sheet, bar, and forgings, as well as data illustrating the effect of cold rolling, variation in the heat treatment, and elevated-temperature exposure also are presented. Data on the effect of specimen orientation, which are also included, indicate that the ductility and toughness of specimens designed to evaluate the properties in the short transverse direction are somewhat lower than in the other directions. The high strength and toughness that can be obtained in the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels make them attractive for certain critical applications that require these properties. The fabrication characteristics, weldability, and simple heat treatment are other advantages of these steels. (Author).

Book excerpt: STEELS: Metallurgy and Applications provides a metallurgical understanding of commercial steel grades and the design, manufacturing and service requirements that govern their application. The properties of different steels are described, detailing the effect of composition, processing and heat treatment. Where appropriate an introduction is given to standard specifications and design codes provided on component manufacture and property requirements for successful service performance. The book deals with steel products in some depth, in four chapters covering wide strip, structural steels, engineering and stainless steel grades. At the begining of each chapter an overview is given which details important features of the grades and a historical perspective of their development. Also featured are up to date information on steel prices and specifications. David Llewellyn has over thirty years experience in the steel industry and is currently lecturing in the Materials Engineering Department at University College Swansea. '..the book unfolds into an easily readable and a valuable source of highly relevant and contemporary information on steels' - METALS AND MATERIALS '.. a high quality product from all points of view' - INSTITUTE OF METALS AND MATERIALS AUSTRALASIA features up to date information on steel prices and specifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fine-scale microstructures of the 18Ni(250) and 18Ni(300) grades of maraging steel have been examined using electron microscopy of thin foils and extraction replicas in conjunction with electron-diffraction and electron-probe analyses of particles extracted from these steels. The microstructure of both steels in the annealed condition consists of small, equiaxed martensite grains containing a high dislocation density but few microtwins. The main source of the strengthening that occurs in these steels during aging is the precipitation of extremely fine particles of intermetallic compounds. The major precipitate, Ni3Mo, appears to nucleate on dislocations, and during the early stages of aging it occurs in the form of ribbons or rods. A second precipitate, which nucleates homogeneously, appears as small spheres in the early stage of aging. The identity of this precipitate is not certain, but indirect evidence suggests that it is Ni3Ti. Upon continued aging, both types of precipitates assume the form of platelets or discs. The softening that occurs in these steels upon overaging is believed to result from the rapid growth of reverted austenite plates and the resolution of precipitate particles in the vicinity of the austenite plates.
