Book Synopsis Quantum Statistics and the Many-Body Problem by : Samuel Trickey
Download or read book Quantum Statistics and the Many-Body Problem written by Samuel Trickey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume represents the great majority of the papers presented on Sanibel Island at the first Symposium on Quantum Statistics and Many-Body Problems (January 26-29, 1975). In his Introductory Remarks, Professor Lawdin outlines the history of the original Symposia, and the genesis of the conference whose papers comprise this volume. We join him in his expression of thanks, and note, additionally, our gratitude to him and to Professors N. Y. Ohrn, J. R. Sabin, E. D. Adams, and John Daunt. The papers are grouped somewhat differently from their order of presentation. It seemed convenient to begin with the six papers which deal with sound propagation in one form or another, then have a two-paper diversion into solid Helium. The SHe superf1uid theme is picked up again with four papers on spin dynamics, orbit waves, etc., followed by a selection of five papers on a variety of experimental and theoretical aspects of the SHe superf1uid problem. Work in the areas of films, mono1ayers, and mixtures is presented next, followed by two papers on liquid ~He. We conclude with a selection of six papers on other quantum fluids and general statistical mechanics. We are most grateful to the contributors to this volume for their patience and cooperation; they have had as editors three utter novices! We have learned much, both scientifically and editorially. We hope that this volume will be of at least some help to others as well.

Book Synopsis Ultrasonics of High-Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors by : Moises Levy
Download or read book Ultrasonics of High-Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors written by Moises Levy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics, Volume XX: Ultrasonics of High-Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors covers the many acoustic studies of the high-Tc superconductors. This book is composed of 10 chapters that include some unconventional superconducting systems, such as superfluid 3He, heavy Fermion superconductors, and magnetic re-entrant superconductors. The introductory chapter summarizes the results that have been observed in Bardeen, Cooper, and Schriefer superconductors as functions both of temperature and magnetic field. The subsequent chapters deal with the theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrasonic study of some unconventional superconductors. Considerable chapters are devoted to the measurements with sound waves on the sintered high-Tc superconducting systems. These chapters examine first the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the velocity and elastic constants in sintered high-Tc superconductors, as well as the sound absorption and dispersion measurements on single crystals of these superconductors. Discussions on the small-sample resonant ultrasound technique that uses thin piezoelectric films and the effect of oxygen on superconducting properties and the response of sound to these additions are also provided in these chapters. The concluding chapter presents a theoretical foundation for sound measurements in the superconducting state, emphasizing the effects of multigap structures and gas anisotropy on sound attenuation in the superconducting state of the cuprate superconductors. This volume will be of great benefit to researchers in the fields of electronics technology and in applied and engineering mechanics.

Download or read book Helium Three written by L. P. Pitaevskii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the subject of superfluid helium three and polarized liquid helium three, this book is devoted to modern problems in many body physics specific to the quantum fluid helium three. Relationships between properties of helium three and topics in other fields are established including superconductivity, non-linear dynamics, acoustics, and magnetically polarized quantum systems. Among the chapters in this collection one finds valuable reference material and original research not published elsewhere. Advanced research topics are presented in a pedagogical manner, in considerable depth, and with appropriate introductory material sufficiently general to be suitable to the non-specialist.

Book Synopsis Topological Defects and the Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Symmetry Breaking Phase Transitions by : Yuriy M. Bunkov
Download or read book Topological Defects and the Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Symmetry Breaking Phase Transitions written by Yuriy M. Bunkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-02-29 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topological defects formed at symmetry-breaking phase transitions play an important role in many different fields of physics. They appear in many condensed-matter systems at low temperature; examples include vortices in superfluid helium-4, a rich variety of defects in helium-3, quantized mag netic flux tubes in type-II superconductors, and disclination lines and other defects in liquid crystals. In cosmology, unified gauge theories of particle interactions suggest a sequence of phase transitions in the very early uni verse some of which may lead to defect formation. In astrophysics, defects play an important role in the dynamics of neutron stars. In 1997 the European Science Foundation started the scientific network "Topological defects" headed by Tom Kibble. This network has provided us with a unique opportunity of establishing a collaboration between the representatives of these very different branches of modern physics. The NATO-ASI (Advanced Study Institute), held in Les Houches in February 1999 thanks to the support of the Scientific Division of NATO, the European Science Foundation and the CNRS, represents a key event of this ESF network. It brought together participants from widely different fields, with diverse expertise and vocabulary, fostering the exchange of ideas. The lectures given by particle physicists, cosmologists and condensed matter physicists are the result of the fruitful collaborations established since 1997 between groups in several European countries and in the U.S.A.
