Book Synopsis Summa Contra Gentiles, 2 by : St. Thomas Aquinas
Download or read book Summa Contra Gentiles, 2 written by St. Thomas Aquinas and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 1976-03-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Two of the Summa Contra Gentiles series examines God's freedom in creation, his power as creator of all things, and the nature of man, particularly the unity of soul and body within man. The Summa Contra Gentiles is not merely the only complete summary of Christian doctrine that St. Thomas has written, but also a creative and even revolutionary work of Christian apologetics composed at the precise moment when Christian thought needed to be intellectually creative in order to master and assimilate the intelligence and wisdom of the Greeks and the Arabs. In the Summa Aquinas works to save and purify the thought of the Greeks and the Arabs in the higher light of Christian Revelation, confident that all that had been rational in the ancient philosophers and their followers would become more rational within Christianity. Book 1 of the Summa deals with God; Book 3, Providence; and Book 4, Salvation.

Book excerpt: I thought that you as reader would enjoy this writing on the great dignity of the human soul. This book offers a sharp contrast to the main topics on which I tend to post and was written and compiled from my heart. I have often posted articles on extremely manned starship technologies, and as a physicist, I will continue to do such. However, I offer this rather long article as a sharing of my personal belief in the transcendent dignity of every human person and by corollary that of any of our ETI brothers and sisters. With modern technological capabilities to monitor the various emotional and mental states of test subjects and the ability to measure and experimentally probe the electric and magnetic fields generated within the human body, we sometimes are tempted to view the human soul as some form of corruptible energy field. We long for a rekindling of a sense of mystery regarding the ephemeral reality of the human soul. This book is motivated as an attempt to restore a sense of mystery in the minds and hearts of any and all persons who will read this post regarding that aspect of our human nature that seems to be beyond validation by modern science, technology, and medicine and which seems to defy certain and precise explanation by philosophers, theologians, and clergyman alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago the English Dominican Fathers embarked on what was considered by many the hazardous and even useless venture of translating the Summa Theologica of the Angelic Doctor. Yet although there were critics adverse to the project, there were others, not a few, who approved and encouraged; these and the favour with which the effort, notwithstanding its many deficiencies, was received, heartened the translators to persevere, and enabled them to bring their work to a happy conclusion. For the venture has proved a success beyond the most sanguine expectations; and already the work has entered into a second edition.

Book Synopsis Hindu Primary Sources by : Carl Olson
Download or read book Hindu Primary Sources written by Carl Olson and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together texts from a variety of sectarian traditions, this reader provides the broadest selection of primary source Hindu literature available to date. The volume is divided into two major parts. The first section presents selections that explore major themes in classical Sanskrit traditions, including those in the Vedic, Upanisadic, and Dharma literatures, as well as the classical philosophical-religious schools. The second part includes selections that highlight the sectarian and devotional movements related to major deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, Rama, Sant, Tantra, and the goddess figures. In addition to a general introductory chapter on Indian literature, each major section is introduced by an essay that places the selections within the context of Hindu history. This comprehensive reader stands on its own as an indispensable anthology of original textual sources for courses in Hinduism, while also serving as a companion volume to the text The Many Colors of Hinduism: A Thematic-Historical Introduction.
