Book excerpt: Dietrich von Hildebrand, widely regarded as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the 20th century, is well-known for his numerous books, but, until this present work, not much has been known of his remarkable and inspiring life. Written by his wife, Alice, also a highly respected Catholic thinker, this is a fascinating, moving and, at times, gripping account of a truly great man of the Church who suffered much for the faith. Based on a very long "letter" Dietrich wrote to his wife late in his life, it tells his story from his glorious youth with a unique intellectual and cultural formation, his coversion to Catholisism, his great passion for truth and beauty, his extensive writing on Christian philosophy and theology, and his steadfast, determined opposition to Nazism that made him a marked man who miraculously escaped execution. A powerful biography of a relentless fighter against injustice, a devoted son of the Church, a man who had the "soul of a lion". Illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soul of a Lion, an engaging memoir by Willie Labuschagne, is an exhilarating journey which begins with the young conservationist's unique experiences with wild animals. From his groundbreaking research on the desert cheetah's behaviour and ecology to becoming an internationally respected consultant on environmental and wildlife-related issues, he holds the reader's attention with all the skill of the master storyteller. The numerous occasions when Willie faced potentially life-threatening situations with wild animals are vividly recounted, many of them wryly humorous while others evoke deep emotion. But not all animal encounters took place in the wild. A significant and poignant encounter that further inspired Willie's approach to conservation occurred when, during his time as director of the Johannesburg Zoo, he and his family hand-raised a newborn lion cub that had been rejected by its mother. He recalls the countless obstacles put in his way by the bureaucratic nature of his own species during his tenure at the zoo. But despite numerous challenges he persisted in his goal of transforming and improving zoological institutions. A driving force behind the changing nature of professionally managed zoological gardens, Willie's book reminds us that, while many of the world's zoos should be unconditionally closed, progressive modern zoos are becoming increasingly aligned to wildlife conservation: they are vital for ensuring the survival of threatened species. Willie shares his entertaining and often moving life experiences with warmth and understanding, whether it is sleeping under the stars with the bushmen of the Kgalagadi desert or observing the traditions of the Zulu Royal House. His travels in the African landscape in particular are an exciting panorama of many distinctive habitats, from the relentless desert of the Skeleton Coast in Namibia to the pristine beauty of the Tsitsikamma Forest and the breathtaking vastness of the African bushveld. Importantly, he is forthright in his view of the critical position of the world we live in and the future it holds for mankind and believes that we are all part of a custodianship which should do everything in its power to protect our fragile environment. Willie Labuschagne, a man with the soul of a lion, is a dedicated and internationally celebrated wildlife conservationist who holds a master's degree in wildlife management. For more than five decades he has been actively involved in the conservation of threatened species for which he has received national and international recognition, culminating in numerous awards.

Now a wildlife biologist brings you nose to nose with the elusive cougar. Harley Shaw shares dramatic stories culled from his years of studying mountain lions, separating fact from myth regarding their habits while raising serious questions about mankind's relationship with this commanding creature. "Most of us move into the country because we love wildlife," writes Shaw. "But none of us will tolerate having our pets or children eaten. . . . When lion/human encounters occur, the lion (or bear, or wolf) always ultimately loses." Soul among Lions offers us a chance to consider the true meaning of that loss.

Book excerpt: Through my book, I want my people to know about the importance of their beautiful and adventurous lives which they end up due to some kind of problems in their life or they destroy it. These problems can be relationship issues, getting threats from someone, due to some kind of addiction or psychological disorders. There are two kinds of people -- Strong and weak. The strong pass the adventure but the weak gets lost in the adventure of life and we all know the result that is SUICIDE! I have heard a lot that usually when people don't find any way, they commit suicide not knowing that it's not the solution. The only solution to their problems is Struggle! After all we know that struggles makes a man better. Some people are in a hurry and they always say that we have limited time on this earth, what we can do in it? But they don't even think of that if their time is limited, they should enjoy in that time only. They should make each and every single moment of their life to be counted on this earth. Most say ' I can only be happy if I have XYZ in my life' not knowing that they are complete in themselves. They don't need anybody to complete them. I don't want my people to be coward, i want them to be brave just like a lion! The lion is courageous, he is very bold. He believes any opportunity is worth giving a try and never lets it slip from his hands. The lion is like a miracle in this world, as he is ready to face every gordian knot. So, the main purpose of my book is to let my people know that this all is a part of their amazing journey, and they should face every circumstance with courage and strength. And to let them know that life will not follow our way, we have to follow it's path and most importantly, we have to accept the way it goes. We should remember that all we need is a strong mindset.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In life we are given several opportunities to get closer to our Dad. In this story I describe how my story is like that of the Lion and the King, a story told in India. A king is told that he will be killed and going to hell and out of his fear he tries to come up with a solution. The King finds out that if he is injured the lion who is a symbol of the devil will not kill him because the lion will not kill its prey if it is already injured. The King then decides to injure himself and therefore he will no longer fall victim to the lion because the lion likes a challenge, and the King is no longer a challenge since it is injured. The injured King then seeks to find comfort to his pain and his pain causes him to seek his creator who can heal all vessels and direct them in the righteous path or destroy the body and the soul on a lake of fire. When the King approaches his creator his creator has sympathy for him and restores him and shows him the righteous path to stay away from the Lion’ therefore giving him an opportunity to be a part of the royal family in heaven. The situation of the Lion and the King is like mine because I became injured and through my injuries came to find refuge in my Dad who is also my creator. In this book I describe in haiku, free style poetry and short stories how the Lion was out to get me, and my injury saved me causing me to get closer to my Lord and Savior also known as my Dad. This story that you are about to read is about me a child of God who received refuge and healing through our higher power.

Coupling careful attention to detail with interpretive breadth, The Soul of Athens examines the nature of love, the natural doubleness of human thinking and the ambiguous relation of image and reality, as well as patriarchy and democracy, and heroic and moral virtue.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A stirring tale of a rare bond formed between humans and an animal.”—Time Two men. One baby lion. What could go wrong? A Lion Called Christian tells the remarkable story of how Anthony “Ace” Bourke and John Rendall, visitors to London from Australia in 1969, bought a boisterous lion cub in the pet department of Harrods. For several months, the three of them shared a flat above a furniture shop on London’s King’s Road, where the charismatic and intelligent Christian quickly became a local celebrity, cruising the streets in the back of a Bentley, popping in for lunch at a local restaurant, even posing for a fashion advertisement. But the lion cub was growing up—fast—and soon even the walled church garden where he went for exercise wasn’t large enough for him. How could Ace and John avoid having to send Christian to a zoo for the rest of his life? A coincidental meeting with English actors Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, stars of the hit film Born Free, led to Christian being flown to Kenya and placed under the expert care of the “father of lions” George Adamson. Incredibly, when Ace and John returned to Kenya to see Christian a year later, they received a loving welcome from their lion, who was by then fully integrated into Africa and a life with other lions. A video of this reunion has become a YouTube classic. Originally published in 1971, and now fully revised and updated with more than 50 photographs of Christian from cuddly cub in London to magnificent lion in Africa, A Lion Called Christian is a touching and uplifting true story of an indelible human-animal bond. It is destined to become one of the great classics of animal literature.

The book shows the world that Haile Selassie I is Jesus Christ returned in his kingly and conquering form. It shows that Jesus conquered death, and for those who follow him will never die. It shows the cross as a symbol of death as it was before Jesus’ time, during His time, and as it still is today: a symbol of death, a graven image of silver, gold, wood, and stone. Hath . . . The Lion Prevailed? is a book that will reveal to anyone why the Rastafarians see Haile Selassie I as the Creator of the Universe.
