Book excerpt: "In The Market Day of the Soul, James T. Dennison examines the question of the supreme Christian holy day, the Sabbath. He shows how the Sabbath emerged from the imprecision of the sixteenth century to become a celebrated cause in pre-Revolutionary England. Finally, he demonstrates the triumph of the Puritan Sabbath during the Revolution, a triumph that continued to make the English Sabbath distinctive into the nineteenth century. In the course of this investigation, Dennison shows that the Puritan view of the Lord's Day became the dominate view - both theologically and practically - by the latter half of the seventeenth century, in spite of challenges it faced from the ""medieval"" position of the Court party and the Seventh-day Sabbatarians. Table of Contents: Preface Introduction Chapter 1 - The Formative Years: The Sabbath and the Desire for a Pure Reformation, 1532-1603 Chapter 2 - The Restless Years: The Sabbath in the Era of the Book of Sports, 1603-1633 Chapter 3 - Years of No Rest: The Sabbath Pamphlet Wars, Laud and the Revolution, 1633-1650 Chapter 4 - Years of Relative Rest: The Sabbath as an English Custom, 1650-1700 Chapter 5 - Conclusion Appendix I - Articles of Visitation Appendix II - The Puritan Attitude Toward Recreation Table Illustrating Doctrinal Differences and Similarities"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attracting passionate fans primarily among African American listeners in the South, southern soul draws on such diverse influences as the blues, 1960s-era deep soul, contemporary R & B, neosoul, rap, hip-hop, and gospel. Aggressively danceable, lyrically evocative, and fervidly emotional, southern soul songs often portray unabashedly carnal themes, and audiences delight in the performer-audience interaction and communal solidarity at live performances. Examining the history and development of southern soul from its modern roots in the 1960s and 1970s, David Whiteis highlights some of southern soul's most popular and important entertainers and provides first-hand accounts from the clubs, show lounges, festivals, and other local venues where these performers work. Profiles of veteran artists such as Denise LaSalle, the late J. Blackfoot, Latimore, and Bobby Rush--as well as contemporary artists T. K. Soul, Ms. Jody, Sweet Angel, Willie Clayton, and Sir Charles Jones--touch on issues of faith and sensuality, artistic identity and stereotyping, trickster antics, and future directions of the genre. These revealing discussions, drawing on extensive new interviews, also acknowledge the challenges of striving for mainstream popularity while still retaining the cultural and regional identity of the music and maintaining artistic ownership and control in the age of digital dissemination.

Book excerpt: Soul by Soul tells the story of slavery in antebellum America by moving away from the cotton plantations and into the slave market itself, the heart of the domestic slave trade. Taking us inside the New Orleans slave market, the largest in the nation, where 100,000 men, women, and children were packaged, priced, and sold, Walter Johnson transforms the statistics of this chilling trade into the human drama of traders, buyers, and slaves, negotiating sales that would alter the life of each. What emerges is not only the brutal economics of trading but the vast and surprising interdependencies among the actors involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a seismic shift in American social thought, Jeffrey Sklansky offers a new synthesis of the intellectual transformation entailed in the rise of industrial capitalism. For a century after Independence, the dominant American understanding of selfhood and society came from the tradition of political economy, which defined freedom and equality in terms of ownership of the means of self-employment. However, the gradual demise of the household economy rendered proprietary independence an increasingly embattled ideal. Large landowners and industrialists claimed the right to rule as a privilege of their growing monopoly over productive resources, while dispossessed farmers and workers charged that a propertyless populace was incompatible with true liberty and democracy. Amid the widening class divide, nineteenth-century social theorists devised a new science of American society that came to be called "social psychology." The change Sklansky charts begins among Romantic writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller, continues through the polemics of political economists such as Henry George and William Graham Sumner, and culminates with the pioneers of modern American psychology and sociology such as William James and Charles Horton Cooley. Together, these writers reconceived freedom in terms of psychic self-expression instead of economic self-interest, and they redefined democracy in terms of cultural kinship rather than social compact.

Book excerpt: The Ultimate History of Northern Soul. Young Soul Rebels is the intimate story of Britain's most fascinating underground music scene – northern soul. Stuart Cosgrove has been a well-known collector on the scene for decades, and here he takes the reader on a rollercoaster journey to the heart of this secret society: the iconic clubs – The Twisted Wheel, The Torch, Wigan Casino and the Blackpool Mecca, the infamous bootleggers, and the DJs and crate-digging collectors who voyaged to America to unearth rare sounds. The book sweeps across fifty years of social and cultural history, taking in the rise of amphetamine culture, the brutal policing of the youth scene, the north–south divide, the rise of Thatcherism and the miners' strike, and concludes with a picture of northern soul today: as popular now as it was in its 1970s heyday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What accounts for miraculous healings unexplainable by doctors? Is there a reality to spiritual healings? William Gladstone initially approached Dr. Zhi Gang Sha with some skepticism and disbelief. William believed that there was more to life than the material world, but he knew that the world has many dishonest and self-deceiving mystics. So he decided to explore. William, having studied medical anthropology at Harvard University, had met and worked with some of the greatest spiritual leaders on the planet. He was excited to explore Dr. Sha and his healing practices. William spent weeks with Dr. Sha watching him at work, talking to his students, and observing his healings. He interviewed him at length, asking for specifics and addressing difficult questions. He delved into the science behind Dr. Sha’s work and explored the underlying concepts beneath these “miracle” healings. What William learned amazed him and opened his mind to possibilities he never expected. Dr. Zhi Gang Sha is a medical doctor trained in both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as ancient Chinese sacred energy and spiritual healing. Over the last decade, he has healed hundreds of thousands of individuals with thousands documented and available for viewing on YouTube. How does he do it? Is it the placebo effect or something much more profound? Dr. and Master Sha: Miracle Soul Healer documents the remarkable journey of a world renowned spiritual teacher and master healer who has not only demonstrated the ability to heal but also to teach people to heal themselves. Written for skeptics as well as believers, Dr. and Master Sha: Miracle Soul Healer explores the results and methodology of Dr. Sha’s unique life journey and his stated life mission to serve humanity and the Divine and create a healthier and happier world. This book explores the ultimate mystery of how faith, science, and healing can change your life.
