Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents, for the first time, the complete Mazurkas of Frederic Chopin arranged for solo classical guitar. the Mazurka is the only form the composer embraced throughout his lifetime. the distinctive and personal pieces are unimaginably varied and colorful, ranging from brief and vigorous dances to deep and complex extended works. Always achingly melodic and featuring surprising harmonies not evident in his other compositions, the Mazurkas are a true monument to Chopin's genius. These new arrangements were prepared with rigorous fidelity to the originals, while never sacrificing true playability. Careful attention to every detail of execution combined with thorough notes on each piece and the folk dance tradition that inspired them to make this unique offering truly user-friendly. Musically beautiful, idiomatic and accessible, this monumental collection is a breathtaking addition to the guitar repertoire. Written in standard notation only.

Book Synopsis The Padrone by : George Whitefield Chadwick
Download or read book The Padrone written by George Whitefield Chadwick and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Whitefield Chadwick (18541931), a Massachusetts native identified with the so-called second New England School of composers, is among the most important and creative American composers in the generation that bridged the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Trained in part in Germany, he spent much of his working life educating other musicians at the New England Conservatory of Music, which he led from 1897 until his death. Chadwick fashioned a compelling individual musical voice rooted in a Euro-American musical idiom; his orchestral and chamber music was performed with some frequency in his own day and has been revived in ours. His opera The Padrone, set to a libretto by David K. Stevens (based on an idea from Chadwick himself), was composed in 1912; it was strongly influenced by the verismo operas of the time (such as Leoncavallos Pagliacci and Puccinis Tosca), which attempted to bring to opera the naturalism of such late nineteenth-century writers as Zola and Ibsen. The Padrone is set in an American city (presumably the North End of Boston) in the present. The story, a tragic tale in two acts with an orchestral interlude, revolves around a ruthless member of the Italian community (the padrone) and his exploitation of more recently arrived immigrants. Chadwick composed The Padrone for submission to the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, but the opera was rejected, probably because of its gritty realism, and was never staged during Chadwicks lifetime. (The Padrone exists only in manuscript form and has never been published; its only public performance so far took place in 1997.) In contrast to American operas of its generation that dramatize myths and legends from the ancient past, The Padrone brings a modern story to the stage, set to music of dramatic power and superb craftsmanship.

Book Synopsis Action, Knowledge, and Will by : John Hyman
Download or read book Action, Knowledge, and Will written by John Hyman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the difference between the movements in our bodies we cause personally ourselves, such as the movements of our legs or our lips when we walk or speak, and the movements we do not cause personally, such as the contraction of the heart? Is an act that is done under duress done voluntarily, out of choice? Should duress exculpate a defendant completely, or should it merely mitigate the criminality of an act? When we explain an intentional act by stating our reasons for doing it, do we explain it causally or teleologically, or both? Should we care whether our choices are guided by knowledge or mere true belief? In Action, Knowledge, and Will, John Hyman explores these and other central problems in the philosophy of action and the theory of knowledge, and connects these areas of enquiry in a new way. The main premise of the book is that human action has four irreducibly different dimensions, each with its own family of concepts: - a physical dimension, in which the principal concepts are those of agent, power, and causation; - a psychological dimension, with the concepts of desire, aim, and intention; - an ethical dimension, with the concepts of voluntariness and choice; - an intellectual dimension, with the concepts of reason, knowledge, and belief. Studying each of these dimensions of human action separately yields a string of original results, culminating in a new analysis of the relationship between knowledge and rational behaviour, which provides the foundation for a new theory of knowledge itself.
