Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Scientific Aspects of Sorption and Filtration Methods for Gas and Water Purification". The Study Institute was held at Fauske Hotel, Fauske, a small town in the northern part of Norway, 2)rd-29th June, 1974. The members of the Scien tific Advisory Committee were: The Engineering Research Foundation at T. Halm¢ the Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim, Norway W.H. Hardwick AERE, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., U.K. B. Ottar Norwegian Institute of Air Research, Kjeller, Norway J .A. Wilhelm Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center, Karlsruhe, Germany R. Berg Institutt for Atomenergi, Kjeller, Norway The members of the Organizing Committee were: E. Andersen M. Bonnevie-Svendsen G. Jarrett all from Institutt for Atomenergi, Kjeller, Norway. The Advanced Study Institute was financially sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. The aim of the Study Institute was to bring together scien tists concerned with fundamental aspects of sorption, solid state physics and reaction kinetics and workers who are occupied with the development of filter systems for controlled and efficient removal of impurities and poisons from air, off-gases, potable water and industrial effluents. The papers presented covered both theoretical and practical aspects of sorption and membrane filtration. The emphasis was on factors which may effect the filter efficiency, on evaluation, optimalization, controlled development of "tailor made" systems, mathematical models and VI economical consideration. The publication of these lectures was made possible through the kind cooperation of the lecturers.

The book outlines the principle unit operations that are involved in the separation, degradation and utilisation of organic and inorganic matter during water and wastewater treatment. The module builds on the subjects of chemistry, biology and engineering covered in Process Science and Engineering for Water and Wastewater Treatment (Module 1) and provides a descriptive introduction to unit operations that are further described with design and operational details in later books in the series. The text of Principles of Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes has been divided into the following Units: Water Quality Process Flowsheeting Physical Processes Chemical Processes Sorption Processes Biological Processes Membrane Processes Sludge Treatment Utilisation Odour Management These units have has been designed for individual self-paced study that includes photographs, illustrations and tables and describe the form, function and application of unit operations for the treatment of water and wastewater. Each section of the text gives step-by-step learning in a particular subject, that includes an approximation of how long you will need to spend on that section and provides key points that highlight the principles of the different sections. Each unit includes exercises to help understand the material in the text, self-assessment questions to test your understanding and text references.

Some focus on the theory of performance and removal mechanisms while others focus on design features. This book focuses on solutions. It describes the challenges facing water providers to provide safe water that is acceptable to their customers, utility experiences using activated carbon, activated carbon applications, and design and procurement approaches. The appendices include detailed case studies and a life-cycle assessment demonstrating favorable sustainability considerations for activated carbon when compared to other treatment technologies. Never before has all of this information been together in one location. The what, why, and how of activated carbon are connected in this book and demonstrate why this treatment technology has maintained its status as an integral treatment technology in the quest for pure water over millennia"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption processes have played a central role in water treatment for many years but their importance is on the rise with the continuous discoveries of new micropollutants in the water cycle (pharmaceuticals for example). In addition to the classical application in drinking water treatment, other application fields are attracting increasing interest, such as wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, treatment of landfill leachate, and so on. Based on the author's long-term experience in adsorption research, the scientific monograph treats the theoretical fundamentals of adsorption technology for water treatment from a practical perspective. It presents all the basics needed for experimental adsorption studies as well as for process modelling and adsorber design. Topics discussed in the monograph include: introduction into basic concepts and practical applications of adsorption processes; adsorbents and their characterisation, single and multi-solute adsorption equilibria, adsorption kinetics, adsorption dynamics in fixed-bed adsorbers and fixed-bed adsorber design, regeneration and reactivation of adsorbents, introduction into geosorption processes in bank filtration and groundwater recharge. According to the increasing importance of micropollutants in the water cycle, particular attention is paid to their competitive adsorption in presence of background organic matter. Clear illustrations, extensive literature references and a useful index make this work indispensible for both scientists and technicians involved in water treatment.
