Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "The Viy". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. The title of the story is the name of the Slavic male demonic creature that is the focus of the story. This is a horror novella centered on a seminary student who encounters a witch and must later confront the monstrous entity named Viy. This is one of the first uses of the technique of the grotesque, which was largely created by Gogol and copied (along with tragi-comic surrealism) by Kafka. In Kiev, three students ventured on a vacation, but while seeking shelter, Khoma Brut had a harrowing encounter with an old woman who turned out to be a witch. The experience shook him, but upon his return to Kyiv, he was tasked with praying for a deceased young woman, who was the same witch. Over three nights, Khoma was tormented by supernatural forces in the church, culminating in the summoning of Viy, a fearsome entity. Unable to resist Viy's gaze, Khoma met a tragic end, with his peers speculating that fear was his ultimate downfall.

Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "Old World Landowners". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. A touching portrayal of an elderly couple's routine and love, highlighting the inevitable passage of time. "Old World Landowners" is a tale from the "Mirgorod" series penned by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol in 1835. The narrative introduces us to Afanasy Ivanovich, a not-so-tall man who habitually dons a sheepskin coat and almost perpetually wears a smile. In contrast, Pulcheria Ivanovna seldom laughs, but her visage radiates such genuine kindness and generosity that a smile might seem too sweet for her already tender expression. The couple resides in a secluded old-world village of Little Russia, living a life of such serenity that any visitor to their quaint manor, nestled amid lush gardens, would feel the world's troubles melting away. Their home brims with items of yesteryears, melodious doors, and storerooms stocked under Pulcheria Ivanovna's meticulous supervision. Although occasionally pilfered by their own staff, the bounties of their fertile land are so ample that the elderly couple remains blissfully unaware of the minor thefts. The duo, childless, share an immense love for each other, a love so profound that it's heartwarming to witness their tender interactions. They hold a penchant for indulging, both in food and in pampering each other. Thanks to the peculiar qualities of the Little Russian air that aids digestion, their hospitality wouldn’t burden a guest. From dawn to dusk, Pulcheria Ivanovna is ever attentive to her husband's desires, gently suggesting various dishes. However, their idyllic life takes a turn with the onset of a tragic incident.

Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's famous story The Portrait (Портрет). This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. First Published in the collection Arabesques in 1835, The Portrait is one of Gogol's most supernatural works, with a tragic moral. Oscar Wilde's philosophic novel is templated off of this work, and has a similar point. "The Portrait" is the story of the artist Andrey Petrovich Chartkov, who stumbles upon a frighteningly lifelike portrait in an art shop and is compelled to buy it. The painting is magical and presents him with a dilemma - to struggle to make his own way in the world on the basis of his own talents, or to accept the magical painting's help to guarantee riches and fame. He chooses to become rich and famous, but when he comes across a portrait by another artist that is "pure, flawless, beautiful as a bride", he realises that he has made the wrong choice and he falls ill and dies of a fever. It is a re-telling of a Ukrainian fairy tale.

Book excerpt: A new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "A Terrible Revenge". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. "A Terrible Revenge" is a story by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, part of the collection "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". Approximately dates between the summer and early autumn of 1831. In the first edition of "Evenings", "The Terrible Revenge" has a subtitle, which was removed in later reprints: "An Old True Story". This narrative is laden with dark supernatural elements, telling the story of a man seeking revenge after the murder of his family. The stylistic features of "Terrible Revenge" show the influence of folklore, especially East Slavic. In addition to Gogol's ideas about lamentations and songs written in imitation of Ukrainian folk songs, the story contains many folklore images, comparisons, epithets, including the famous description of the Dnieper: "Wonderful is the Dnieper in calm weather, when it flows freely and smoothly through the forests and the mountains are full of its waters... A rare bird flies to the middle of the Dnieper. Lush!"

Book excerpt: This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's famous novel The Overcoat. This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. Often regarded as Gogol's masterpiece, this tale narrates the life of a downtrodden clerk and his quest for a new overcoat, touching upon societal injustices and the supernatural. In 19th-century St. Petersburg, Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, a diligent but mocked government clerk, is forced to replace his worn-out overcoat. After painstakingly saving money and collaborating with his tailor, Petrovich, he purchases a new coat, which unexpectedly earns him admiration at his office. However, after a party in its honor, he's robbed of the coat and receives no aid from the authorities. Seeking assistance from an influential general, Akaky is instead belittled and rebuffed, leading to his swift decline in health and eventual death. Posthumously, Akaky's spirit haunts the city, snatching overcoats, until he confronts and terrifies the remorseful general by stealing his overcoat. After achieving this revenge, Akaky's ghost disappears, but another apparition resembling one of the thieves emerges elsewhere in the city.
