Book Synopsis 2015 U.S. Higher Education Faculty Awards, Vol. 3 by : Faculty Awards
Download or read book 2015 U.S. Higher Education Faculty Awards, Vol. 3 written by Faculty Awards and published by River Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FacultyAwards.org is the first and only university awards program in the United States based on faculty peer evaluation. Faculty Awards was created to recognize outstanding faculty members (as viewed by their Faculty peers) at colleges and universities across the United States. Faculty members voted through the 2014-2015 academic year for their peers at their academic departments and schools within a number of categories. Access to FacultyAwards.org to nominate and vote for Faculty was limited to university professors or faculty members at accredited U.S. institution of higher education. Faculty members were nominated and voted for by other faculty members in their own academic departments and schools. We strove to maintain an accurate peer-review process. Voting was not open to students or the public at large. In addition, faculty members voted for educators only at their own college or university. Winners for the 2014-2015 academic year, in all departments and colleges across U.S. institutions of higher education were announced in March 2015 and are permanently archived at FacultyAwards.org, as well as recognized in this 2015 print edition of the Faculty Awards Compendium. For the academic year 2014-2015 votes were cast to nominate and vote for Faculty members, and no self-voting was allowed, to assure the integrity of the whole process. This volume of the Faculty Awards Compendium includes Faculty awardees within Computer and Information Sciences, Engineering, and Science Disciplines for the 2014-2015 academic year. A total of 1282 winning Faculty members in 554 higher education institutions were determined after tallying the votes. We would like to thank all Faculty members who participated in the voting process and to wish all the Faculty awardees continued success in their academic endeavors. We look forward to resuming the voting process for the 2015-2016 academic year awards.

Book Synopsis Honor and Revenge: A Theory of Punishment by : Whitley R.P. Kaufman
Download or read book Honor and Revenge: A Theory of Punishment written by Whitley R.P. Kaufman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problem of justifying the institution of criminal punishment. It examines the “paradox of retribution”: the fact that we cannot seem to reject the intuition that punishment is morally required, and yet we cannot (even after two thousand years of philosophical debate) find a morally legitimate basis for inflicting harm on wrongdoers. The book comes at a time when a new “abolitionist” movement has arisen, a movement that argues that we should give up the search for justification and accept that punishment is morally unjustifiable and should be discontinued immediately. This book, however, proposes a new approach to the retributive theory of punishment, arguing that it should be understood in its traditional formulation that has been long forgotten or dismissed: that punishment is essentially a defense of the honor of the victim. Properly understood, this can give us the possibility of a legitimate moral justification for the institution of punishment.

Book Synopsis Enforcement of Arbitral Awards Against Sovereigns by : R. Doak Bishop
Download or read book Enforcement of Arbitral Awards Against Sovereigns written by R. Doak Bishop and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a veritable explosion of investment treaty and other arbitration claims brought against sovereigns. Many of those cases have been filed before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Claims (ICSID), which has its own self-contained rules for enforcement. Given this significant increase in sovereign cases and the issues attendant to sovereign immunity, this treatise is timely in addressing the various issues that arise in enforcing arbitral awards against sovereigns. One of the first questions posed to their counsel by clients considering the initiation of an arbitration proceeding against a sovereign state is whether and how the resulting award can be enforced. The origin of the client’s question is usually based in some knowledge that a state possesses sovereign immunity, along with an uncertain concern about the exceptions to such immunity and the difficulties of enforcement against a sovereign’s assets. This uncertainty is understandable, especially in light of the sometimes confusing and even contradictory court decisions in certain jurisdictions. It is these inquiries in their broadest application that form the subject of this treatise. With contributions by eminent and experienced practitioners of the multiple issues that have arisen in various jurisdictions and the key cases that have created the law of enforcement of obligations against sovereigns, this book will provide access to valuable information, add to the transparency of this subject and further spur the consistent development of this area of law. This book is divided into three parts. The first part is general in nature and includes chapters encompassing the subjects of sovereign immunity in general (including both immunity from jurisdiction and immunity from enforcement), treaty obligations to honor awards, diplomatic protection by a claimant’s government to obtain payment of awards, and conciliation and settlement. The second part of the book deals with the means of enforcing awards. Part three of this treatise addresses the enforcement issues that arise in specific jurisdictions in which enforcement against sovereign assets is often sought - in particular, the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, and South America.
Book Synopsis Honor and Loyalty by : Leslie D. Feldman
Download or read book Honor and Loyalty written by Leslie D. Feldman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines the political themes and strategies utilized by candidate Bush in 1988 and President Bush in 1992, as told by the actual players as well as presidential and political scholars. Also considered are the role of the Vice President, the Cabinet, relations with Congress and the Supreme Court, the presidency and the media, and the role of the First Lady. This volume focuses on the political world inside the Bush White House. Domestic political actors and institutions such as the vice president, chief of staff, Congress, and the Supreme Court all interact to create a president's political world. In George Bush's inaugural speech he spoke of the keys to success, saying these ideas are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment. These themes are seen by many of the writers in the collection as characterizing the political world of George Bush. Equal consideration is given to the political themes and strategies utilized by candidate Bush in 1988 and President Bush in 1992. Also considered are the role of the Vice President, the Cabinet, relations with Congress and the Supreme Court, the presidency and the media, and the role of the First Lady. Essential reading for scholars and other researchers of the Bush presidency and American history of the late 1980s.
