Book excerpt: Sonosyntactics introduces the reader to over forty-five years of Paul Dutton’s diverse and inventive poetry, ranging from lyrics, prose poems, and visual work to performance texts and scores. Perhaps best known for his acclaimed solo sound performances and his contributions to the iconic sound poetry group The Four Horsemen, Dutton is a surprising, witty, sensitive, and innovative explorer of language and of the human. This volume gathers a representative selection of his most significant and characteristic poetry together with a generous selection of uncollected new work. Sonosyntactics demonstrates Dutton’s willingness to (re)invent and stretch language and to listen for new possibilities while at the same time engaging with his perennial concerns—love, sex, music, time, thought, humour, the materiality of language, and poetry itself. Gary Barwin’s introduction outlines the major subjects and techniques of Dutton’s poetry: an intricate weaving of thought and language, sound and emotion, sound and sense, and the unfolding of a text through the logic of language play such as puns, paradoxes, ambiguity, and sound relations. In an afterword by Dutton himself, the poet insightfully lays out the terms of his engagement with the materiality—both visual and aural—of language, often beyond the purely recountable, representational, or depictive.

There are plenty of modern sonnet anthologies around; but none that have delved so thoroughly into the myriad ways poets have stretched, deconstructed and re-composed the venerable form, including visual and concrete sonnets. We take as our time frame 1945 to the 21st century, with poets ranging from Edwin Denby (born - 1903) to those currently in their twenties. Jeff Hilson, the editor, contributes an introductory essay. It's contributors include: Robert Adamson, Jeremy Adler, Tim Atkins, Ted Berrigan, Jen Bervin, Rachel Blau duPlessis, Christian Bok, Sean Bonney, Ebbe Borregaard, Jonathan Brannen, Pam Brown, Laynie Browne, Thomas A Clark, Adrian Clarke, John Clarke, Bob Cobbing, Clark Coolidge, Kelvin Corcoran, Beverly Dahlen, Ian Davidson, Edwin Denby, Laurie Duggan, Paul Dutton, Ken Edwards, Michael Farrell, Allen Fisher, Kathleen Fraser, William Fuller, John Gibbens, Harry Gilonis, Giles Goodland, Bill Griffiths, Alan Halsey, Robert Hampson, Jeff Hilson, Anselm Hollo, Lyn Hejinian, Piers Hugill, Peter Jaeger, Elizabeth James, Lisa Jarnot, Keith Jebb, Justin Katko, John Kinsella, Philip Kuhn, Michelle Leggott, Tony Lopez, Chris McCabe, Steve McCaffery, Jackson Mac Low, Richard Makin, Peter Manson, Brian Marley, Bernadette Mayer, Jay Millar, David Miller, and Peter Minter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Trends in Greek Linguistics is a collection of fifteen papers written by junior researchers of Greek linguistics, aiming to highlight the ongoing linguistic research on Greek. The collected papers present original research from a fresh perspective, and bring to the fore aspects of the Greek language that have not been extensively examined so far. The authors provide a concise overview of their field and address problems in a variety of theoretical frameworks, including cognitive linguistics, formal linguistics, corpus linguistics, variational sociolinguistics and critical discourse analysis. The volume comprises four sections: Aspects of Meaning, Textual and Sociolinguistic Approaches, Phonetics and Phonology, and Clinical Linguistics and Language Teaching. The first section includes chapters exploring lexical temporal expressions, the conceptualisation of time and the semantic properties of the subjunctive mood. The second section discusses issues relating to adjective evaluation, strategies of verbal humour, the role of social variables, media and political discourse. The section on phonetics and phonology includes three experimental studies that explore segmental and supra-segmental phenomena. The last section of the volume combines papers from two different fields, dealing with aphasic speech and the teaching of idioms. This collection of papers will appeal to researchers, students of linguistics and educators who are interested in Greek and/or the implications of its study for other languages and linguistic theory.

Book excerpt: 'SonSet On The Throne' focuses on Jesus being both Saviour and Lord of our lives. This book looks at how, when we choose to let Him sit on the throne of our hearts and minds, we can experience more of the fullness of life that Jesus came to bring. For He is the true Lord of all and He came for good. Carmel writes: When I was 21 years old, I 'saw' with the eyes of my heart a vision of a large white sun, like an awesome ball of white light, that stood in front of me. I saw Jesus walk out of the white sun towards me and offer me His hand in friendship and divine love. As I took His hand, He lifted me up to stand, and called me to walk with Him. The light of the white sun shone all around us. Over time, it's holy white fire drove away the darkness and pain I felt in my heart. But I knew that I needed to know what The Bible said, as I could not rely on a 'vision' alone. What if it was just a daydream? Something not real? And yet this moment in time changed me and set me on a new path, so I could not ignore it. Therefore I searched the Scriptures (of which I had no former knowledge) to see what they said about this. I found numerous Bible verses talking about eternal light, the sun of righteousness, and the Son of Glory. I found references in Revelation of the Apostle John's amazing visions of Jesus, which I could now relate to. Many of the references I have shared in my previous three books, and many more I shall share in 'SonSet On The Throne'. Over the years, The Son who rose from the dead for all mankind, has truly been set on the throne of my own heart and life. But His Lordship was not forced on me. I chose to accept Him the more I got to know God personally though Jesus. For He is the 'Sun of Righteouness', full of goodness and He now sits on a heavenly throne with the highest honour. Here are some words taken from The Bible in Matthew 17:2 at the transfiguration of Jesus: "His face was as bright as the sun. His clothes looked as white as light" (NLT). And some more from Revelation 4:2 where The Apostle John speaks of how he saw the Risen Jesus in one of his many visions recorded for us in the Scriptures: "I was in the spirit; and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne" (KJV) In this book I would like to share some further thoughts and insight about God's wonderful kindness with the reader, as people everywhere look to Jesus and are making Him their Lord; which He has always been and always will be, but God has given us the right and freedom to choose. That is love! I pray you will enjoy this book and are deeply encouraged by it, for that is my heart as the author. Please also see the end pages for more about my husband and I, and Gardenland Ministries and the free resources we have on our website to encourage and bless all. In The Son Carmel Carberry
