Book excerpt: Myrtle Reed's classic novel is not simply a romantic story, but a celebration of life, love and the exquisiteness of music. The story involves a virtuoso violin player living in Lancaster, whose house is kept by his spinster sister. In a different neighborhood of town, an elderly lady who adopted and raised a young girl is surprised when her relatives- a widow and her son - arrive unannounced and wish to stay. The son, being musically talented, aspires to take up tutorage with the famous violinist of Lancaster. Thus begins an awkward situation that serves as a gauntlet for the passionate story which follows. Notably for a book of this genre, The Master's Violin contains many musings on the nature and value of family, music, parenthood, friendship and life. The reflective and thoughtful narration, along with the poignant descriptions of the master's performances, makes this a unique and memorable story. The author was among the most famous and appreciated novelists of her time. Unusually for a romance author, Reed also published a series of successful cookbooks. Though her fame declined in the years following her death in 1911 at the age of only 36, her books have maintained an appreciative audience into the 21st century.

Book excerpt: "A warm and expansive portrait of a woman’s mind that feels at once singular and universal," this collection of essays interweaves commentary on modern life, feminism, art, and sex with the author's own experiences of obsession, heartbreak, and vulnerability (BuzzFeed). Like a song that feels written just for you, Larissa Pham's debut work of nonfiction captures the imagination and refuses to let go. Pop Song is a book about love and about falling in love—with a place, or a painting, or a person—and the joy and terror inherent in the experience of that love. Plumbing the well of culture for clues and patterns about love and loss—from Agnes Martin's abstract paintings to James Turrell's transcendent light works, and Anne Carson's Eros the Bittersweet to Frank Ocean's Blonde—Pham writes of her youthful attempts to find meaning in travel, sex, drugs, and art, before sensing that she might need to turn her gaze upon herself. Pop Song is also a book about distances, near and far. As she travels from Taos, New Mexico, to Shanghai, China and beyond, Pham meditates on the miles we are willing to cover to get away from ourselves, or those who hurt us, and the impossible gaps that can exist between two people sharing a bed. Pop Song is a book about all the routes by which we might escape our own needs before finally finding a way home. There is heartache in these pages, but Pham's electric ways of seeing create a perfectly fractured portrait of modern intimacy that is triumphant in both its vulnerability and restlessness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to feel time, to sense its passing along the sinews and nerves of the body as much as the synapses of the mind? And how do books, as material arrangements of print and paper, mediate such temporal experiences? Chronometres: Devotional Literature, Duration, and Victorian Reading Culture is a study of the time-inflected reading practices of religious literature, the single largest market for print in Victorian Britain. It examines poetic cycles by John Keble, Alfred Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, and Frances Ridley Havergal; family prayer manuals, Sunday-reading books and periodicals; and devotional gift books and daily textbooks. Designed for diurnal and weekly reading, chronometrical literature tuned its readers' attentions to the idea of eternity and the everlasting peace of spiritual transcendence, but only in so far as it parcelled out reading into discrete increments that resembled the new industrial time-scales of factories and railway schedules. Chronometres thus takes up print culture, affect theory, and the religious turn in literary studies in order to explore the intersections between devotional practice and the condition of modernity. It argues that what defines Victorian devotional literature is the experience of its time signatures, those structures of feeling associated with its reading durations. For many Victorians, reading devotionally increasingly meant reading in regular portions and often according to the calendar and work-day in contrast to the liturgical year. Keeping pace with the temporal measures of modernity, devotion became a routinized practice: a way of synchronizing the interior life of spirit with the exigencies of clock time. Chronometres considers how the deliverances afforded through time-scaled reading are persistently materialised in the body, both that of the book and of the reader. Recognizing that literature and devotion are not timeless abstractions, it asks how the materiality of books, conceived as horological relationships through reading, might bring about the felt experience of time. Even as Victorian devotion invites us to tarry over the page, it also prompts the question: what if it is 'eternity' that keeps time with the clock?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are becoming a new species of human being. Our consciousness and the cells of our physical bodies are being transformed by light and love. We are beginning to experience living in a new dimension but here on Earth, right now. This transformation to a new way of being is known as ascension. Lady Sedna is one of the most senior elders among the Ascended Masters, training and guiding apprentices along the Ascension Path until they are fully operational as a being of love, wisdom, and power, and utilizing their mastery for the benefit of this planet and her people. In over one hundred messages she has channeled through Sophia Ovidne, Lady Sedna has brought together a kind of user manual for ascension. It contains the criteria for reaching ascension, and also for maintaining this position, for the challenges from our everyday world are always knocking at our door and threatening to unseat us from our thrones. However, this is not an instruction manual with detailed steps for Enlightenment. Each pilgrims journey is too unique and customized for that. But in her messages, Lady Sedna finds a way to provide answers to everyone who searches for one. Her insight, compassion, understanding, and straightforwardness, make her an ideal mentor as we struggle to embrace and to figure out what is happening to us as we are transformed from base metal into gold. There are few people on Earth who yet have this knowledge and experience to be able to share it with us and assist us. This handbook is a gift from heaven, a map when we are lost and confused, a balm when we are frustrated and hurting, and an inspiration when we are stuck in the lower levels and need reminding how to fly.

Born in Melbourne's outer suburbs in the 1970s, Andrew Stafford grew up in a time when music was a way out and a way up. His passion for rock 'n' roll led him to a career as a journalist and music critic, but along the way his battles with family illness, mental health and destructive relationships threatened to take him down. Andrew Stafford delves bravely and deeply into a life that has been shaped and saved by music's beat. From the author of the cult classic Pig City comes a memoir of music, madness, and love.
