Book Synopsis The Female Voice in Sufi Ritual by : Shemeem Burney Abbas
Download or read book The Female Voice in Sufi Ritual written by Shemeem Burney Abbas and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The female voice plays a more central role in Sufi ritual, especially in the singing of devotional poetry, than in almost any other area of Muslim culture. Female singers perform sufiana-kalam, or mystical poetry, at Sufi shrines and in concerts, folk festivals, and domestic life, while male singers assume the female voice when singing the myths of heroines in qawwali and sufiana-kalam. Yet, despite the centrality of the female voice in Sufi practice throughout South Asia and the Middle East, it has received little scholarly attention and is largely unknown in the West. This book presents the first in-depth study of the female voice in Sufi practice in the subcontinent of Pakistan and India. Shemeem Burney Abbas investigates the rituals at the Sufi shrines and looks at women's participation in them, as well as male performers' use of the female voice. The strengths of the book are her use of interviews with both prominent and grassroots female and male musicians and her transliteration of audio- and videotaped performances. Through them, she draws vital connections between oral culture and the written Sufi poetry that the musicians sing for their audiences. This research clarifies why the female voice is so important in Sufi practice and underscores the many contributions of women to Sufism and its rituals.

Book Synopsis Female Ascetics in Hinduism by : Lynn Teskey Denton
Download or read book Female Ascetics in Hinduism written by Lynn Teskey Denton and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2004-08-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female Ascetics in Hinduism provides a vivid account of the lives of women renouncers--women who renounce the world to live ascetic spiritual lives--in India. The author approaches the study of female asceticism by focusing on features of two dharmas, two religiously defined ways of life: that of woman-as-householder and that of the ascetic, who, for various reasons, falls outside the realm of householdership. The result of fieldwork conducted in V? ran? si (Benares), the book explores renouncers' social and personal backgrounds, their institutions, and their ways of life. Offering a first-hand look at and an insightful analysis of this little-known world, this highly readable book will be indispensable to those interested in female asceticism in the Hindu tradition and women's spiritual lives around the world.

Book Synopsis Religion, the Body, and Sexuality by : Nina Hoel
Download or read book Religion, the Body, and Sexuality written by Nina Hoel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does religion relate to bodies and sexualities? Many people would answer, simply, "through repression," but the relationship is much more complicated than that. While many religions draw boundaries between what they consider to be appropriate and inappropriate use of the human body, especially in the realm of sexuality, the same religions often celebrate human sexuality and even expect sexual partners to provide each other with sexual pleasure. Celibacy, too, is more than just repression, and sometimes it is even seen as providing the practitioner with great spiritual power; in other settings, the sex act itself is understood to provide this power. Religion, the Body, and Sexuality offers students and general readers a sophisticated and accessible exploration of the connections between religion, sexuality, and the body, through case studies and overviews in the following thematic chapters: Celibacy Regulation Controversy Violence Innovation Instrumentalization Ecstasy Each chapter includes suggestions for further reading, questions for further thought, and a list of relevant media resources. This engaging book is an excellent addition to introductory courses on religion or sexuality and is a much-needed new volume for advanced courses on the intersections of these areas of human experience.
