Book Synopsis Poetry by Women in Ireland by : Lucy Collins
Download or read book Poetry by Women in Ireland written by Lucy Collins and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovering the hidden history of poetry written by women in Ireland from 1870 to 1970, this anthology includes more than 180 poems by fifteen women with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and creative aims. Challenging the assumption that women wrote little poetry of note during this period, this rich and original collection reveals the range of their achievement and the lasting value of their work. Presented alongside biographical sketches of their authors, the poems span the political and the personal. From nationalist ballads to modernist lyrics, this book is an essential resource for students and scholars of Irish literature.

Book excerpt: Don't leave yet. Let there be one more piece of magic to remember the place by. Is there something especially Irish about Irish gardens? The climate, soils, availability of plants and skills of green-fingered people generate an unusually benign environment, it's true, but not one that is unique to Ireland. Irish gardens tend to avoid magnificence in favour of a quiet and domesticated beauty, but that is not peculiar to Ireland either. Strains of Irishness run through these gardens like seams of ore. Seen not just as zones of horticultural bravura, but also as reflections of historical, cultural, political and religious events and values, the gardens accrue an unusual richness of surface and depth of meaning. Atmospherically illustrated by Brian Lalor, The Irish Garden wanders into individual gardens, rather than presenting a sweeping chronology. This book is a rhapsody on themes of Irishness, as if the spirit and soul of Ireland itself were sometimes more visible in these places than in the more conventionally visited locations of battlefields, breweries and bars.

Book Synopsis Charles Villiers Stanford by : Paul Rodmell
Download or read book Charles Villiers Stanford written by Paul Rodmell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book devoted to the composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) since 1935, this survey provides the fullest account of his life and the most detailed appraisal of his music to date. Renowned in his own lifetime for the rapid rate at which he produced new works, Stanford was also an important conductor and teacher. Paul Rodmell assesses these different roles and considers what Stanford's legacy to British music has been. Born and brought up in Dublin, Stanford studied at Cambridge and was later appointed Professor of Music there. His Irish lineage remained significant to him throughout his life, and this little-studied aspect of his character is examined here in detail for the first time. A man about whom no-one who met him could feel indifferent, Stanford made friends and enemies in equal numbers. Rodmell charts these relationships with people and institutions such as Richter, Parry and the Royal College of Music, and discusses how they influenced Stanford's career. Perhaps not the most popular of teachers, Stanford nevertheless coached a generation of composers who were to revitalize British music, amongst them Coleridge-Taylor, Ireland, Vaughan-Williams, Holst, Bridge and Howells. While their musical styles may not be obviously indebted to Stanford's, it is clear that, without him, British music of the first half of the twentieth century might have taken a very different course.
