Book excerpt: Hamish Brown has been an outdoorsman for more than sixty years. The first person to complete an uninterrupted round of Scotland's Munros, his account of the feat in Hamish's Mountain Walk is a classic of Scottish mountain literature. Throughout those years he has contributed articles and essays to many journals and, in this selection, he presents not an autobiography or some overview of life, but a very personal record of his many journeys and interests from his 'dancing days of spring' to his present, very active, later life.

Book Synopsis Out of the Hermit's Meadow and Wood by : Victor Densmore
Download or read book Out of the Hermit's Meadow and Wood written by Victor Densmore and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bulk of these poems were written by Densmore between the years 1998 and 2003. Similar in scope to the poems of Carl Sandburg and Robert Frost with the imagistic power of Wallace Stevens, his poetry comes from a quiet and thoughtful observation of life, nature, and the people who inhabit both. The poems throughout are gentle and warm but never without purpose and drive. In their unfolding is revealed a comforting philosophy of time, memory, and the events of which both are composed. In an early review of the original print run Tom Slayton -- then editor of Vermont Life Magazine -- said ...Victor Densmore's poetry ...is finely wrought and sweet and reminds me a bit of the poetry of the late William Mundell who also celebrated the passing life of the farm. He's currently working on his second book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woven Shades of Green is an annotated selection of literature by authors who focus on the natural world and the beauty of Ireland. It begins with the Irish monks and their largely anonymous nature poetry, written at a time when Ireland was heavily forested. A section follows devoted to the changing Irish landscape, through both deforestation and famine, including the nature poetry of William Allingham, and James Clarence Mangan, essays from Thomas Gainford and William Thackerary, and novel excerpts from William Carleton and Emily Lawless. The anthology then turns to the nature literature of the Irish Literary Revival, including Yeats and Synge, and an excerpt from George Moore’s novel The Lake. Part four shifts to modern Irish nature poetry, beginning with Patrick Kavanaugh, and continuing with the poetry of Seamus Heaney, Eavan Boland, and others. Finally, the anthology concludes with a section on various Irish naturalist writers, and the unique prose and philosophical nature writing of John Moriarty, followed by a comprehensive list of environmental organizations in Ireland, which seek to preserve the natural beauty of this unique country. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
Book Synopsis Between Noble and Humble by : Ruchang Zhou
Download or read book Between Noble and Humble written by Ruchang Zhou and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Noble and Humble: Cao Xueqin and the Dream of the Red Chamber (曹雪芹新传, literally New Biography of Cao Xueqin) is a translation of a scholarly work by the famous mainland Chinese critic Zhou Ruchang. Written for the Western reader, it historicizes the life and times of the Chinese novelist Cao Xueqin (c. 1715-1763) and comprehensively introduces the origins of the novel Dream of the Red Chamber (Honglou meng). This translation is unique because it offers the first book-length biography of Cao Xueqin in English. Zhou carefully historicizes the decline of the once illustrious Cao clan, and he demonstrates how Cao Xueqin's own childhood experiences in a wealthy bondservant family during the Qing dynasty profoundly informed the encyclopedic narrative that he would later write. In Between Noble and Humble, Zhou also offers intriguing and controversial theories about Honglou meng based on decades of careful research, for instance, that the famous commentator Red Inkstone was in fact a female relative of Cao Xueqin.
