Book excerpt: Beethoven's Sonata, Opus 27, No. 2, was not known as the "Moonlight Sonata" during his lifetime. The name has its origins in 1832, in remarks by the German music critic Ludwig Rellstab, as he likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. The name caught on quickly, and later in the nineteenth century, it could be said that the sonata was "universally known" by that name.

Book Synopsis Mendelssohn, Time and Memory by : Benedict Taylor
Download or read book Mendelssohn, Time and Memory written by Benedict Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Mendelssohn has long been viewed as one of the most historically minded composers in western music. This book explores the conceptions of time, memory and history found in his instrumental compositions, presenting an intriguing new perspective on his ever-popular music. Focusing on Mendelssohn's innovative development of cyclic form, Taylor investigates how the composer was influenced by the aesthetic and philosophical movements of the period. This is of key importance not only for reconsideration of Mendelssohn's work and its position in nineteenth-century culture, but also more generally concerning the relationship between music, time and subjectivity. One of very few detailed accounts of Mendelssohn's music, the study presents a new and provocative reading of the meaning of the composer's work by connecting it to wider cultural and philosophical ideas.

Book Synopsis Notes Become Music by : Walter Fleischmann
Download or read book Notes Become Music written by Walter Fleischmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notes Become Music: A Guidebook from the Viennese Piano Tradition addresses the many unwritten nuances of dynamics, articulation and agogics as an expression of fundamental principles of a common European musical language. It treats the score as an incomplete musical shorthand that outlines the compositional and interpretive imperatives implicit within it, drawing on historical records from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and detailed comparisons of works to underline the author’s presentation of Viennese tradition. This book is not primarily concerned with questions of style or interpretation. Rather, it explains the many facets of musical notation that were taken for granted by composers who assumed a knowledge of the piano tradition of their day. Notes Become Music informs not only those students in countries where the central European music tradition is still unfamiliar, but also a younger generation of Europeans who have grown up without a living connection to their musical past.

Book Synopsis The Finale in Western Instrumental Music by : Michael Talbot
Download or read book The Finale in Western Instrumental Music written by Michael Talbot and published by Oxford Monographs on Music. This book was released on 2001 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge that finales are by tradition (and perhaps also necessarily) 'different' from other movements has been around a long time, but this is the first time that the special nature of finales in instrumental music has been examined comprehensively and in detail. Three main types offinale, labelled 'relaxant', 'summative', and 'valedictory', are identified. Each type is studied closely, with a wealth of illustration and analytical commentary covering the entire period from the Renaissance to the present day. The history of finales in five important genres -- suite, sonata, string quartet, symphony, and concerto -- is traced, and the parallels and divergences between these traditions are identified. Several wider issues are mentioned, including narrativity, musical rounding, inter-movement relationships, and the nature of codas. The book ends with a look at thefinales of all Shostakovich's string quartets, in which examples of most of the types may be found.
