Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: since the first International Congress for Experimental and Therapeutic Hypnotism in Paris in 1889, there have been several per iods of widespread interest in hypnosis among the professions as well as the lay public, followed by periods of profound neglect. Since the end of World War II, however, we have witnessed not only a strong resurgence of interest in hypnosis throughout the world but also the gradual development of the kind of infrastructure which a field requires to survive and prosper. The burgeoning clinical literature has been matched by a dramatic increase in the amount of systematic research carried out in a wide range of institu tions throughout the world. A tradition of triennial major world congresses has been established, beginning with the 3rd International Congress for Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine in Paris in 1965. These meetings, encouraged and sponsored by the International Society of Hypnosis and its predecessor, the International Society of Clini cal and Experimental Hypnosis, are sponsored by universities and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among scientists and clinicians throughout the world.

Book Synopsis Who Killed Zebedee? ; And, John Jago's Ghost by : Wilkie Collins
Download or read book Who Killed Zebedee? ; And, John Jago's Ghost written by Wilkie Collins and published by Gay Men's Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undisputed master of “sensation fiction” and forefather of the modern crime story, Wilkie Collins was also a supreme chronicler of the dark underside of Victorian London. Chilling in the extreme, these three short stories of murder and suspense are outstanding examples of his craft. Setting himself in front of the station fire, a young policeman is little prepared for the account of bloody murder that will be relayed that night. It seems that Mrs. Crosscapel’s lodging house is a place of dark secrets and buried passions—emotions that will soon cloud even his own judgment. As with the other short stories included here, Who Killed Zebedee? is a brilliant and highly original tale of horror and the macabre.

Book Synopsis Wilkie Collins, Medicine and the Gothic by : Laurence Talairach-Vielmas
Download or read book Wilkie Collins, Medicine and the Gothic written by Laurence Talairach-Vielmas and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Wilkie Collins’s interest in medical matters developed in his writing through exploration of his revisions of the late eighteenth-century Gothic novel from his first sensation novels to his last novels of the 1880s. Throughout his career, Collins made changes in the prototypical Gothic scenario. The aristocratic villains, victimized maidens and medieval castles of classic Gothic tales were reworked and adapted to thrill his Victorian readership. With the advances of neuroscience and the development of criminology as a significant backdrop to most of his novels, Collins drew upon contemporary anxieties and increasingly used the medical to propel his criminal plots. While the prototypical castles were turned into modern medical institutions, his heroines no longer feared ghosts but the scientist’s knife. This study hence underlines the way in which Collins’s Gothic revisions increasingly tackled medical questions, using the medical terrain to capitalize on the readers’ fears. It also demonstrates how Wilkie Collins’s fiction reworks Gothic themes and presents them through the prism of contemporary scientific, medical and psychological discourses, from debates revolving around mental physiology to those dealing with heredity and transmission. The book’s structure is chronological covering a selection of texts in each chapter, with a balance between discussion of the more canonical of Collins’s texts such as The Woman in White, The Moonstone and Armadale and some of his more neglected writings.
